Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, Zhengzhou, Henan, China

Purpose: This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) and the risk of postoperative depression in patients undergoing major surgery.

Methods: Data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database were analysed for patients aged over 20 years who underwent major surgery between 2004 and 2018. CPSP was defined as the use of prescribed analgesics for over 3 months postsurgery, with a prescription exceeding 90 cumulative defined daily doses.

Department of Healthcare Administration, Asia University, 40454 Taichung, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Introduction: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 is known to be involved in the progression of several fibrogenic diseases, but its association with oral submucous fibrosis remains unclear. This study aims to ascertain whether dipeptidyl peptidase-4 plays a role in the pathogenesis of arecoline-induced oral submucous fibrosis.

Methods: We assessed the expression of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 in arecoline-treated epithelial cells and the exosomes derived from cells.

Objectives: Concerns about erythropoietin (EPO) therapy for anemia in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) contributing to potential bone loss and increased fracture risks are growing. This study investigated the impact of EPO administration on the risk of common osteoporotic fractures in ESRD patients.

Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study compared EPO users and non-EPO users among ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis, diagnosed with ESRD between 2000 and 2014 identified from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan.

Enhancement of security, personalization, and safety in advanced transportation systems depends on driver identification. In this context, this work suggests a new method to find drivers by means of a Random Forest model optimized using the osprey optimization algorithm (OOA) for feature selection and the salp swarm optimization (SSO) for hyperparameter tuning based on driving behavior. The proposed model achieves an accuracy of 92%, a precision of 91%, a recall of 93%, and an F1-score of 92%, significantly outperforming traditional machine learning models such as XGBoost, CatBoost, and Support Vector Machines.

Background/purpose: Titanium (Ti) is extensively used in dental and orthopedic implants due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, its smooth and biologically inert surface does not support the ingrowth of new bone, and Ti ions may have adverse biological effects. The purpose is to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium and create a 3D structured coating to enhance osseointegration through a very simple and fast surface treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates a link between insomnia and a higher risk of stroke, prompting investigation into non-drug treatments like acupuncture.
  • A study using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database found that patients with insomnia who received acupuncture had a lower incidence of stroke compared to those who did not.
  • Specifically, acupuncture patients showed a reduced stroke risk with better outcomes for those who underwent more sessions, suggesting a dose-response relationship in treatment effectiveness.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health, College of Public Health, China Medical University, No. 100, Section 1, Economic and Trade Road, Beitun District, Taichung, 406040, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Although several environmental factors may increase the risk of nervous system anomalies, the association between exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 μm (PM) and nervous system anomalies is not completely understood. This study aimed to examine the association between expoure to PM and nervous system anomalies, including specific phenotypes during preconception and early pregnancy and determine the crucial time windows.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a key marker of coronary artery disease (CAD) but is often underreported in cancer patients undergoing non-gated CT or PET/CT scans. Traditional CAC assessment requires gated CT scans, leading to increased radiation exposure and the need for specialized personnel. This study aims to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) method to automatically detect CAC from non-gated, freely-breathing, low-dose CT images obtained from positron emission tomography/computed tomography scans.

Amniotic fluid assessment is crucial in prenatal ultrasound to monitor fetal conditions, with polyhydramnios, characterized by excessive amniotic fluid, affecting 1%-2% of pregnancies. Polyhydramnios is linked to complications such as placental abruption, preterm labor, congenital anomalies, and postpartum hemorrhage, emphasizing the need for early detection and management. While idiopathic causes account for 60%-70% of cases, other causes include impaired fetal swallowing and increased urine production due to maternal, fetal, and placental conditions.
