Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Program for MD/PhD, Research Center for Cancer Biology, School of Medicine, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan.

Lipid reprogramming in carcinoma is reported to have a role in carcinogenesis, prognosis and therapy response. The lipid reprogramming could be contributed by either autonomous or nonautonomous resources. Since the nonautonomous lipid resources contributed by lipoproteins and their receptors have been reported in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), the impact of autonomous lipid metabolites was unknown.

Using machine learning and natural language processing in triage for prediction of clinical disposition in the emergency department.

BMC Emerg Med

Department of Bioinformatics and Medical Engineering, Asia University, No. 500, Liufeng Rd., Wufeng Dist, Taichung City, 413305, Taiwan.

Background: Accurate triage is required for efficient allocation of resources and to decrease patients' length of stay. Triage decisions are often subjective and vary by provider, leading to patients being over-triaged or under-triaged. This study developed machine learning models that incorporated natural language processing (NLP) to predict patient disposition.

The glutamatergic signaling pathway, which is mediated by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, is crucial for osteoblast differentiation and bone function. Dextromethorphan (DXM), a widely used antitussive, is a noncompetitive antagonist of the NMDA receptor. However, the effects of DXM on osteoblast and bone regeneration remain unclear.

Cisplatin, widely used in chemotherapy, acts through mechanisms such as oxidative stress to damage the DNA and cause the apoptosis of cancer cells. Although effective, cisplatin treatment is associated with considerable side effects including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Studies on brown-strain Singer (FVB) have shown its significant antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.

House dust mites (HDM) are common aeroallergens linked to airway inflammation and remodeling in asthma. Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) may mediate these immune responses. However, how the epithelium influences fibroblasts toward airway remodeling remains unclear.

Driving under the influence of alcohol (DUIA) is closely associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Our previous study on machine learning (ML) algorithms revealed a very high accuracy of decision trees with neuropsychological features in predicting the risk of DUIA despite limited data availability. Thus, this study aimed at comparing six well-known ML algorithms based on electroencephalographic (EEG) signals to differentiate adults with AUD and DUIA (AUD-DD) from those with AUD without DUIA (AUD-NDD) and controls.

Article Synopsis
  • DACPR (dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation) significantly boosts survival rates for patients experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, but its effectiveness can differ based on the location of the incident (home vs public place).
  • A study analyzing 1,160 OHCA cases in Taichung City found that public places had younger and predominantly male patients, but lower rates of chest compressions (41.1% vs 65.5% in homes) and a longer time to recognize the OHCA (108 seconds vs 79 seconds).
  • Public callers faced more physical barriers and were more likely to refuse guidance during emergencies compared to private home callers, who experienced higher OHCA recognition and more successful implementation

Metastatic lung cancer is a highly prevalent cancer with a very low chance of long-term survival. Metastasis at secondary sites requires that cancer cells develop anoikis resistance to survive during circulation. High levels of bone sialoprotein (BSP), a member of the small integrin-binding ligand N-linked glycoproteins (SIBLINGs), have been shown to promote the spread of lung cancer cells; however, the effects of BSP in anoikis resistance are largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study employs SWATH-MS and secretome proteomics to identify proteins secreted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa that combat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
  • Variations in inhibition zones suggested different levels of resistance among MRSA strains, leading to the use of multivariate statistical methods to pinpoint five potential protein biomarkers, including Peptidase M23.
  • Gene ontology analysis and sequence alignment confirmed the antibacterial properties of these proteins, illustrating the utility of SWATH-MS in advancing research on antibacterial agents.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with clinicians often observing increased muscle stiffness associated with joint pain and dysfunction. This study examines the impact of Fu's Subcutaneous Needling (FSN), a non-pharmacological technique, on muscle stiffness in the lower limbs of individuals with knee OA.

Materials And Methods: This study protocol is a pilot, single-center, randomized controlled trial.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates a new alarm system, the Hearing AED app, designed to expediently activate nearby automated external defibrillators (AEDs) during out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA).
  • The simulation involved participants divided into three groups: bystanders at the scene, responders alerted by the app within 300 meters, and AED alarm responders directed to AED locations.
  • Results showed that AED alarm responders were the fastest in retrieving AEDs, significantly shortening delivery time compared to the other groups.

Post-traumatic missing talus is a rare and severe injury that often results in poor functional outcomes, with no consensus on the optimal treatment approach as strategies vary based on injury severity. We present the case of a 44-year-old male who sustained a missing talus following a high-energy motorcycle accident. After initial wound management and application of an external fixator, the patient underwent size-matched, fresh-frozen talus allograft transplantation combined with subtalar fusion.

Background: Tidal peritoneal dialysis (TPD) provides better fluid flow mechanics and is more comfortable for the patient, owing to fewer alarms and less pain during inflow and outflow. The long-term characteristics of patients with TPD were not evident. In this randomized controlled follow-up study, we aimed to explore the characteristics of patients with TPD, compared to IPD.
