Introduction The purpose of the current study is to present the outcome of closed reduction and stabilization using an Illizarov ring fixator in severe pilon fractures and to investigate the correlation between reduction quality and clinical and functional outcomes. Materials and methods Thirty-three type III tibial plafond fractures, which had been treated with this method, were retrospectively analysed. Quality of reduction was classified according to the Teeny & Wiss (TW) criteria.

Past, Present, and Future Diagnostic Methods for the Early Noninvasive Detection of Oral Premalignant Lesions: A State of the Art and Systematic Review.

To provide an in-depth analysis of noninvasive methods for the early diagnosis of oral premalignant lesions, focusing on novel biomarkers and optical technologies, and to discuss their potential in improving the prognosis of patients with oral oncological diseases. This state-of-the-art review examines various noninvasive diagnostic techniques, including the utilization of salivary microRNAs and optical technologies such as Raman spectroscopy, elastic scattering spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, narrow-band imaging, autofluorescence imaging, toluidine blue staining, and microendoscopy. Several noninvasive techniques have shown varying degrees of effectiveness in detecting oral cancer.

Preoperative Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and the Effect on Bariatric Surgery: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Preoperative oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) in bariatric surgery remains a controversial topic, with a large variety in practice globally. An electronic database search of Medline, Embase and PubMed was performed in an aim to categorise the findings of preoperative endoscopies in bariatric patients. A total of 47 studies were included in this meta-analysis resulting in 23,368 patients being assessed.

Malignant Melanoma of the Middle Ear: Case Report.

We present a case of malignant melanoma in the middle ear in a 63-year-old woman who presented with severe pain on the right side of her face and head, tinnitus, photophobia, and hemorrhagic discharge from the right ear, as well as right facial nerve paralysis. After more than two years of conservative treatment for otitis media and sclerotic mastoiditis, a pathologically enlarged lymph node on the right side of the neck appears. It is removed, and the histopathological examination reveals that it is metastatic malignant melanoma.

Cryptosporidiosis - A Plausible Cause for Relapse of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

A 25-year-old female presented on the acute medical take with rapidly evolving ascending weakness, sensory loss, and areflexia after a prodromal diarrhoeal illness, ultimately critical care admission, tracheostomy, and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. The patient had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) six years previously, treated with intravenous Immunoglobulin, and discharged after a five-day in-patient stay without mechanical ventilation. The role of microRNAs in newborn brain development and hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

Neonates can develop hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) due to lack of blood supply or oxygen, resulting in a major cause of death and disability among term newborns. However, current definitive treatment of therapeutic hypothermia, will only benefit one out of nine babies. Furthermore, the mechanisms of HIE and therapeutic hypothermia are not fully understood.

A confirmed case of sugammadex-induced anaphylaxis in a UK hospital.

We report the first published case of confirmed anaphylaxis to sugammadex in a UK hospital. The patient was given a bolus of sugammadex at the end of surgery. Four minutes later, he developed hypotension and a widespread erythematous rash.

Colopexy as a treatment option for the management of acute transverse colon volvulus: a case report.

Introduction: Transverse colon volvulus is an uncommon acute surgical presentation associated with a higher rate of mortality than volvulae at other locations along the colon. Surgical resection or correction is the only treatment, and various methods have been described in case report literature to relieve the volvulus and prevent recurrence.

Congenital anterior urethral diverticulum in a male teenager: a case report and review of the literature.

We present the case of a 13-year-old boy with a congenital anterior urethral diverticulum. This is a rare condition in males which can lead to obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms and urosepsis. Diagnosis is by urethroscopy and radiological imaging.
