Large-scale and long-term wildlife research and monitoring using camera traps: a continental synthesis.

Camera traps are widely used in wildlife research and monitoring, so it is imperative to understand their strengths, limitations, and potential for increasing impact. We investigated a decade of use of wildlife cameras (2012-2022) with a case study on Australian terrestrial vertebrates using a multifaceted approach. We (i) synthesised information from a literature review; (ii) conducted an online questionnaire of 132 professionals; (iii) hosted an in-person workshop of 28 leading experts representing academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and government; and (iv) mapped camera trap usage based on all sources.

Human tumors are diverse in their natural history and response to treatment, which in part results from genetic and transcriptomic heterogeneity. In clinical practice, single-site needle biopsies are used to sample this diversity, but cancer biomarkers may be confounded by spatiogenomic heterogeneity within individual tumors. Here we investigate clonally expressed genes as a solution to the sampling bias problem by analyzing multiregion whole-exome and RNA sequencing data for 450 tumor regions from 184 patients with lung adenocarcinoma in the TRACERx study.

Emergency and postoperative access to critical and enhanced care: a multicentre prospective observational study.

Introduction: The ability to admit patients to enhanced or critical care may be limited by bed availability. In a network with low provision of critical and enhanced care beds, we aimed to assess the proportion of patients having surgery with moderate (1%-< 5%) or high (≥ 5%) predicted risk of 30-day postoperative mortality and their postoperative care location. We also aimed to study referral and admission outcomes to critical care.

Upper Limb Deep Venous Thrombosis Associated With Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters in Hospitalised Surgical Patients.

Introduction Surgical inpatients frequently require peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) for parenteral feeding and administration of medication. PICCs may cause upper limb deep venous thrombosis (ULDVT), which impacts patient morbidity. We investigated the risk and prevention of PICC-ULDVT in hospitalised surgical inpatients.

We hypothesized that the Everyday Cognition Scale (ECog), a subjective change measure, predicts longitudinal change in cognition in the Brain Health Registry (BHR), an online registry for neuroscience research.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have gained attention as a potential treatment due to their regenerative properties. However, variability in PRP preparation methods and insufficient standardisation in the literature complicate the evaluation of its efficacy and reproducibility.

Establishing a Collaborative Genomic Repository for Adult Burn Survivors: A Burn Model System Feasibility Study.

In this study, we aimed to integrate a genetic repository with an existing longitudinal national burn database. We set out two primary objectives, namely (1) to develop standard operating procedures for genetic sample collection and storage, DNA isolation, and data integration into an existing multicenter database; and (2) to demonstrate the feasibility of correlating genetic variation to functional outcomes in a pilot study, using the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene. Dubbed the worrier/warrior gene, COMT variants have been associated with varying phenotypes of post-traumatic stress, wellbeing, and resilience.

Cardiorenal outcomes associated with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors in chronic kidney disease stage 5 (CKD V): A propensity score-matched analysis.

Background: There remains a paucity of data regarding the cardio-renal benefits of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 (CKD V) based on major clinical trials.

Background: The bacterium Vibrio cholerae causes diarrheal illness and can acquire genetic material leading to multiple drug resistance (MDR). Rapid detection of resistance-conferring mobile genetic elements helps avoid the prescription of ineffective antibiotics for specific strains. Colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays provide a rapid and cost-effective means for detection at point-of-care since they do not require specialized equipment, require limited expertise to perform, and can take less than 30 min to perform in resource limited regions.

Evaluating the SAFE Tool's Impact on Documentation and Patient Safety During Structured Ward Rounds in General Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

Aim  Effective documentation of critical clinical information is vital for patient safety and timely discharges. Ward rounds (WRs) are crucial for multidisciplinary assessments and care planning. Current emergency surgical WR documentation is inconsistent; therefore, this study will implement a structured WR template adapted from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's "Surgical Assessment for Emergencies Ward Round Tool" (SAFE) to address these shortcomings.

Serum Folate Concentrations in Exclusively Breastfed Preterm Infants Who Received No Supplementary Oral Folic Acid After Discharge: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Adequate folate intake is required in preterm infants for rapid growth and development, but there is little evidence to back recommendations. We aimed to assess folate status in preterm infants at discharge and in early infancy, according to exposure to folate sources, particularly in those exclusively/predominantly breastfed. A prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was conducted in the UK, involving 45 preterm infants <33 weeks' gestational age (GA) exclusively/predominantly fed human milk when approaching NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) discharge.

Aims: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement for patients with aortic valve stenosis. The choice between TAVI, surgery, or a conservative approach should be based upon multiple factors including clinical considerations, technical feasibility, and informed patient preference. In this context, engaging patients in a shared decision-making (SDM) process becomes essential, but this practice is generally underused.

A Complex Case of COVID-19 Pneumonitis in a Patient With Follicular Lymphoma.

Protracted COVID-19 is increasingly recognised in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with haematological malignancies. Here, we present the case of a patient with protracted COVID-19 and an underlying B-cell malignancy. Standard COVID-19 treatment with remdesivir and steroids proved ineffective in this patient as she continued to have evolving ground-glass opacities on imaging.

Comparing Austin Moore and Bipolar Prostheses for Management of Femoral Neck Fractures in Low-Resource Hospitals in Rural India.

Background:  Femoral neck fractures in elderly individuals cause significant morbidity, and their management is particularly challenging in rural areas where healthcare access is limited. The recommended treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients with poor mobility, cognitive dysfunction and multiple comorbidities is a hemiarthroplasty, which can be performed with various implants, including monopolar implants like Austin Moore prosthesis (AMP) and bipolar prosthesis (BP). In developing countries like India, rural areas often have constraints with healthcare resources.
