Background: Previous studies have demonstrated residual complement-mediated deposits in repeat kidney biopsies of C3 glomerulopathies (C3G) (dense deposit disease (DDD) and C3 glomerulonephritis) following eculizumab treatment, despite some clinical improvement. With residual complement deposition, it is difficult to determine whether there is a reduced complement-mediated endothelial cell injury. We validated that myeloperoxidase (MPO) immunohistochemical staining identified glomerular endothelial cell injury in crescentic glomerulonephritis and C3G.

Background Context: Postoperative pain control following posterior lumbar fusion continues to be challenging and often requires high doses of opioids for pain relief. The use of ketorolac in spinal fusion is limited due to the risk of pseudarthrosis. However, recent literature suggests it may not affect fusion rates with short-term use and low doses.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare patient-specific acetabular cup target orientation using functional simulation to the Lewinnek Safe Zone (LSZ) and determine associated rates of postoperative dislocation.

Methods: A retrospective review of 1500 consecutive primary THAs was performed. Inclination, anteversion, pelvic tilt, pelvic incidence, lumbar flexion, and dislocation rates were recorded.

Background: Patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty have higher rates of anxiety, depression or anxiety and depression than the general population and higher costs of care, which lead to higher levels of postoperative dissatisfaction and readmission rates. We evaluated the readmission rates of patients undergoing total hip or knee arthroplasty with diagnoses of anxiety, depression, or both.

Methods: Our hospital's prospectively collected data from Michigan's statewide total joint database were reviewed from 2013 to 2018.

BACKGROUND While most coronary congenital anomalies are uncommon, comprising less than 2% of the general population, a single coronary artery is an especially rare finding within this broader category. It involves a lone vessel forming a single ostium from the aortic trunk. This vessel is then the source through which cardiac blood supply originates.

Racial disparities in cancer incidence and outcomes are well-documented in the US, with Black people having higher incidence rates and worse outcomes than White people. In this review, we present a summary of almost 30 years of research conducted by investigators at the Karmanos Cancer Institute's (KCI's) Population Studies and Disparities Research (PSDR) Program focusing on Black-White disparities in cancer incidence, care, and outcomes. The studies in the review focus on individuals diagnosed with cancer from the Detroit Metropolitan area, but also includes individuals included in national databases.

Goal: The goal of this study was to determine the financial impact of adopting the US Multi-Society Task Force (USMSTF) polypectomy guidelines on physician reimbursement and disposable equipment costs for gastroenterologists in the academic medical center and community practice settings.

Background: In 2020, USMSTF guidelines on polypectomy were introduced with a strong recommendation for cold snare rather than cold forceps technique for removing diminutive and small polyps. Polypectomy with snare technique reimburses physicians at a higher rate compared with cold forceps and also requires different disposable equipment.

Prostate radiotherapy in the setting of bilateral hip prostheses: All commonly used photon-based radiation approaches are feasible.

Med Dosim

November 2021

Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-5010, USA; Department of Radiation Oncology, Assarian Cancer Center, Ascension Providence Hospital, Novi, MI 48374, USA.

The prevalence of hip prostheses is increasing. Prostate radiation delivery in the setting of hip prostheses is complicated by both imaging artifacts that interfere with volume delineation and dosimetric effects that must be addressed in the planning process. We hypothesized that with specialized planning, any photon-based definitive prostate radiotherapy approach may be utilized in patients with bilateral hip prostheses.
