With improvements in the early detection of early gastric cancer (EGC) and advances in therapeutic techniques, endoscopic resection (ER) for EGC has become widely adopted in East Asian and Western countries. Endoscopic submucosal dissection has higher rates of en bloc, complete, and curative resections with lower rates of local recurrence than that of endoscopic mucosal resection. ER is a minimally invasive method with low morbidity that provides excellent outcomes.

Korean guidelines for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced peptic ulcer were previously developed in 2009 with the collaboration of the Korean College of and Upper Gastrointestinal Research and Korean Society of Gastroenterology. However, the previous guidelines were based mainly upon a review of the relevant literature and expert opinion. Therefore, the guidelines need to be revised.

Superficial esophageal neoplasms (SENs) are being diagnosed increasingly frequently due to the screening endoscopy and advances in endoscopic techniques. Endoscopic resection (ER) is a relatively noninvasive treatment method with low morbidity and mortality that provides excellent oncologic outcomes. Endoscopic submucosal dissection is associated with higher rates of en bloc, complete and curative resections and lower rates of local recurrence than endoscopic mucosal resection.

Background And Aim: There are few cases of duodenal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma reported in the literature, and little is known about the clinical course of this disease. Here, we aimed to characterize the clinical features of duodenal MALT lymphoma by comparison with gastric MALT lymphoma.
Methods: Thirteen patients diagnosed with duodenal MALT lymphoma at Asan Medical Center from March 1997 to February 2017 were included in this retrospective study, along with patients with gastric MALT lymphoma, matched by age and sex at a 1:10 ratio.

Background: In cases of subepithelial tumors (SETs) located in the cardiac area, a preoperative histologic diagnosis might be helpful in determining the requirement of surgery.
Aim: To investigate the efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) in gastric SETs located in the cardia.
Methods: The data of 107 patients who underwent EUS-FNB, from 2012 to 2017, for tissue sampling of gastric SETs located in the cardia were collected.

Background/aims: Spontaneous retrograde migration of nasoenteral feeding tubes is common in clinical practice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of nasoenteral feeding tube tip fixation with hemoclips to prevent tube dislodgement.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent insertion of an endoscopic nasoenteral feeding tube with or without tube tip fixation with hemoclips at the Asan Medical Center in Korea from January 2016 to December 2017.

Purpose: The diagnostic criteria of gastric intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) are controversial across the world. We investigated how many discrepancies occur in the pathologic diagnosis of IEN and early gastric carcinoma in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) specimens, and evaluated the reasons of the discordance.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1,202 ESD specimens that were originally diagnosed as gastric IEN and early carcinoma at 12 institutions.

Background And Aim: Optimal treatment modalities for each of the three subtypes of achalasia are still under debate. Differences in prognosis and long-term outcomes between peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and balloon dilation (BD) are also unclear. We aimed to compare the treatment outcomes of BD and POEM in each subtype of achalasia by using information from the manometry database of a tertiary referral center in Korea.

Background/aims: We aimed to investigate whether the current indications for curative endoscopic resection (ER) of gastric cancer (GC) can be applied to GC caused by adenoma. Additionally, we attempted to identify factors predictive of lesions subsequently found in addition to the expanded indications for ER.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 342 patients diagnosed with GC caused by adenoma who underwent ER at a single tertiary center between February 2011 and December 2014.

In some cases of iatrogenic Mallory-Weiss tears (MWTs), hemostasis is needed due to severe mucosal tearing with bleeding. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the risk factors for severe iatrogenic MWTs and the methods of endoscopic bleeding control. Between January 2008 and December 2012, 426,085 cases of screening upper endoscopy were performed at the Asan Medical Center.

In most cases of ingested foreign bodies, endoscopy is the first treatment of choice. Moreover, emergency endoscopic removal is required for sharp and pointed foreign bodies such as animal or fish bones, food boluses, and button batteries due to the increased risks of perforation, obstruction, and bleeding. Here, we presented two cases that needed emergency endoscopic removal of foreign bodies without sufficient fasting time.

Background And Aims: The average human life expectancy is increasing worldwide, thus the proportion of elderly gastric cancer patients is also increasing. In this case-control study, we investigated the clinical and oncologic outcomes of gastric cancer in patients over 80 years old.
Methods: From January 2004 to December 2010, 291 patients aged over 80 years old (case group) were diagnosed and treated with gastric cancer at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea.

Objectives: There is limited data on whether scoring systems can be used to predict clinical outcomes in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS). We aimed to evaluate whether the Glasgow-Blatchford score (GBS) could be effective in predicting clinical outcomes of bleeding MWS and to investigate the predictive ability of the Forrest classification for rebleeding and assess the effective endoscopic modalities for bleeding control in MWS.
Methods: From January 2004 to December 2012 168 patients were diagnosed with MWS in the Asan Medical Center Emergency Department.

Background: The incidence of metachronous lesions after endoscopic resection (ER) of high-grade dysplasia (HGD) has not been evaluated, and optimal surveillance strategy remains vague. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of metachronous tumors including HGD and early gastric cancer (EGC) arising after ER.
Patients: The medical records of 2779 patients with 2981 lesions (445 patients with HGD and 2334 patients with EGC) who underwent ER and surveillance endoscopy at Asan Medical Center between April 1999 and December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed, and clinicopathological features of metachronous tumors were analyzed.

Background: Discrepancies in the clinicopathologic parameters pre- and post-endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) sometimes necessitate additional surgical resection. The aim of this study was to assess such discrepancies in clinicopathologic parameters before and after ESD in the context of reducing the risk of failure of curative ESD.
Methods: Data on 712 early gastric cancer patients were prospectively collected from 12 university hospitals nationwide.

Patients with altered anatomy such as a Roux-en-Y anastomosis often present with various pancreaticobiliary problems requiring therapeutic intervention. However, a conventional endoscopic approach to the papilla is very difficult owing to the long afferent limb and acute angle of a Roux-en-Y anastomosis. Balloon-assisted enteroscopy can be used for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in patients with altered anatomy.

Background/aims: Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms suggestive of obstruction such as abdominal pain, proximal distension with extremely suppressed motility in the absence of lumen-occluding lesion, whose etiology/ pathophysiology is poorly understood. In this study we investigated a functionally obstructive lesion that could underlie symptoms of CIPO.
Methods: We studied colons surgically removed from 13 patients exhibiting clinical/pathological features of pseudo-obstruction but were unresponsive to standard medical treatments.
