The differences in clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients with hematological disorders (HD) who developed either coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) or seasonal influenza (SI) are not fully understood. To examine these differences, we retrospectively analyzed the baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with HD admitted from 2016 to 2021. Patients with HD who developed COVID-19 (in the past 1 year) (n=21) or SI (in the past 5 years) (n=23) in the Department of Hematology/Oncology, Asahikawa Kosei General Hospital were evaluated.

Anti-nuclear matrix protein-2 (NXP2) antibody is associated with the severe, chronic myositis phenotype in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Although hyperproduction of type I interferon is considered to play an important role in JDM, sequential changes in biomarkers associated with this pathophysiology have not yet been described in detail. An 8-year-old boy who presented with muscle weakness, heliotrope rash, and Gottron's papules was diagnosed with JDM.

Background: With the global spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), patients with cancer may be at a higher risk of suffering from COVID-19. Although patients with hematological malignancy (HM) are reported to have a higher risk of severe COVID-19 compared with those with solid cancer, the effects of treatment for HM on COVID-19 severity have not been fully elucidated.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the risk factors, including number and timing of chemotherapeutic regimens for HM, for COVID-19 severity in 17 patients with HM, who had developed nosocomial COVID-19 in our department, by dividing them into two groups; a severe group (N=7) and a non-severe group (N=10).

Background: We have previously demonstrated S-1 is non-inferior to taxane with respect to overall survival as first-line chemotherapy for HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer. We aimed to confirm whether S-1 is also non-inferior to anthracycline-containing regimens in the same setting.
Methods: We conducted an open-label, non-inferiority, Phase 3 study.

Background: Granulocyte and monocyte adsorptive apheresis (GMA) is widely used as a remission induction therapy for active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. However, there are no available biomarkers for predicting the clinical outcome of GMA. We investigated the utility of Fecal calprotectin (FC) as a biomarker for predicting the clinical outcome during GMA therapy in active UC patients.

Introduction: Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by autoantibodies against factor VIII (FVIII). Hematological malignancies, especially lymphoid malignancies, are known to be underlying causes of AHA; however, thus far, there is no report of AHA associated with Epstein-Barr-virus-associated T/natural killer-cell lymphoproliferative disease (EBV-T/NK-LPD). Here, we present a case of AHA that developed during treatment for EBV-T/NK-LPD.

Background: Lower respiratory tract infections due to respiratory syncytial virus are associated with morbidity and mortality in infants and children. Thus precise elucidation of respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract infection pathophysiology is important.
Methods: Medical records of hospitalized patients were reviewed.
Introduction: The previous randomized phase 3 trial (SELECT BC) showed that S-1 as a first-line chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is non-inferior to taxane with respect to overall survival. This study aimed to identify the usefulness of metabolism-related genes as predictive biomarkers for the response to S-1 compared with taxane using tumor tissue samples from the previous trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this SELECT BC-EURECA study, 147 patients with human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2)-negative MBC who received either S-1 or taxane were evaluated.

Objectives: While computed tomography colonography (CTC) has become a non-invasive alternative to traditional colonoscopy, superficial lesions tend to be harder to detect, with reports of lesions <2 mm in height being missed. Therefore, for the evaluation of lesion detectability using CTC, optimizing scan parameters becomes important. In this study, we investigate the effect of the reconstructed matrix size from CTC on the lesion conspicuity.

Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) plus calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are a widely used combination therapy for hypertensive patients. In order to determine which combination was better as the next-step therapy for standard-dose combination of ARBs and CCBs, a combination with high-dose CCBs or a triple combination with diuretics, the authors conducted a prospective, randomized, open-label trial to determine which of the following combination is better as the next-step treatment: a combination with high-dose CCBs or a triple combination with diuretics. Hypertensive outpatients who did not achieve their target blood pressure (BP) with usual dosages of ARBs and amlodipine 5 mg were randomly assigned to treatment with irbesartan 100 mg/amlodipine 10 mg (Group 1: n = 48) or indapamide 1 mg in addition to ARBs plus amlodipine 5 mg (Group 2: n = 46).

Maternal-fetal calcium (Ca) transport in the placenta plays a critical role in maintaining fetal bone mineralization. Mutations in the gene encoding the transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 6 (TRPV6) have been identified as causative mutations of transient neonatal hyperparathyroidism due to insufficient maternal-fetal Ca transport in the placenta. In this study, we found two novel mutations in subjects that have transient neonatal hyperparathyroidism.
