Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. Conflicting evidence exists on whether NSAIDs influence signaling related to muscle adaptations and exercise with some research finding a reduction in muscle protein synthesis signaling via the AKT-mTOR pathway, changes in satellite cell signaling, reductions in muscle protein degradation, and reductions in cell proliferation. In this study, we determined if a single maximal dose of flurbiprofen (FLU), celecoxib (CEL), ibuprofen (IBU), or a placebo (PLA) affects the short-term muscle signaling responses to plyometric exercise.

Introduction: The present study determined the (1) day-to-day reliability of basal heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) measured by the Equivital eq02+ LifeMonitor and (2) agreement of ultra short-term HRV compared with short-term HRV.
Methods: Twenty-three active-duty US Army Soldiers (5 females, 18 males) completed two experimental visits separated by >48 hours with restrictions consistent with basal monitoring (eg, exercise, dietary), with measurements after supine rest at minutes 20-21 (ultra short-term) and minutes 20-25 (short-term). HRV was assessed as the SD of R-R intervals (SDNN) and the square root of the mean squared differences between consecutive R-R intervals (RMSSD).

Probiotics are typically marketed as foods and dietary supplements, categories for products intended to maintain health in generally healthy populations and which, unlike drugs, cannot claim to treat or cure disease. This review addresses the existing evidence that probiotics are beneficial to healthy people. Our approach was to perform a descriptive review of efficacy evidence that probiotics can prevent urinary, vaginal, gastrointestinal, and respiratory infections, and improve risk factors associated with cardiovascular health or reduce antibiotic use.

Introduction: Overuse musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) remain a significant medical challenge in military personnel undergoing military training courses; further understanding of the biological process leading to overuse MSKI development and biological signatures for injury risk are warranted. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between overuse MSKI occurrence and physiological characteristics of allostatic load characterized as maladaptive biological responses to chronic stress measured by wearable devices in US Marine Corps officer candidates during a 10-wk training course.
Methods: Devices recorded energy expenditure (EE), daytime heart rate (HR), sleeping HR, and sleep architecture (time and percentage of deep, light, rapid eye movement sleep, awake time, total sleep).

This Military Medicine supplement details an independent academic study contracted by the Marine Corps Training and Education Command to inform the Marine Corps' future approaches to gender integration at recruit training. Military missions are conducted in a multitude of environments including heat and may involve walking under load following severe exertion, the metabolic demands of which may have nutritional implications for fueling and recovery planning. Ten males equipped a military pack loaded to 30% of their body mass and walked in 20°C/40% relative humidity (RH) (TEMP) or 37°C/20% RH (HOT) either continuously (CW) for 90 min at the first ventilatory threshold or mixed walking (MW) with unloaded running intervals above the second ventilatory threshold between min 35 and 55 of the 90 min bout. Identifying effective treatment(s) for sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity is of paramount importance as the global population advances in age and obesity continues to be a worldwide concern. Evidence has shown that a ketogenic diet can be beneficial for the preservation of muscle quality and function in older adults, but long-term adherence is low due in part to the high-fat (≥80%), very low carbohydrate (<5%) composition of the diet. When provided in adequate amounts, exogenous ketone esters (KEs) can increase circulating ketones to concentrations that exceed those observed during prolonged fasting or starvation without significant alterations in the diet.
