Key Laboratory of Basic Pharmacology of Ministry of Education and Joint International Research Laboratory of Ethnomedicine of Ministry of Education, Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi, Guizhou 563000, P.R. China.

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a severe clinical condition associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome that follows systemic inflammatory response syndrome is the leading cause of SAP‑related death. Since the inflammatory mechanism of SAP remains unclear, there is currently a lack of effective drugs available for its treatment.

Autoantibody against aquaporin-5 may be a new diagnostic biomarker for primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Clin Rheumatol

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Southwest Hospital, Army Medical University (the Third Military Medical University), Chongqing, 400038, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of autoantibodies against aquaporins (specifically anti-AQP1 and anti-AQP5) in diagnosing and understanding primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) among 163 participants divided into three groups: pSS patients, those with other connective tissue diseases, and healthy controls.
  • Results indicate that while anti-AQP1 levels were significantly higher in pSS patients compared to healthy controls, it lacked diagnostic value; however, anti-AQP5 levels were also elevated in pSS patients, showing potential as a diagnostic marker.
  • Anti-AQP5 demonstrated high sensitivity (95%) and acceptable specificity (70%) for identifying pSS, although no correlation was found between anti-AQP5

Article Synopsis
  • * The proposed strategy involves using dextran to aggregate stem cells and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) to provide structural support, leading to effective 3D bioprinting of high-performance hydrogels.
  • * After printing, dextran is leached out, enhancing the formation of stem cell spheroids, which improves their ability to differentiate, as demonstrated by experiments with dental pulp stem cells that showed potential for tissue regeneration.

Macrophages are versatile immune cells with remarkable plasticity, enabling them to adapt to diverse tissue microenvironments and perform various functions. Traditionally categorized into classically activated (M1) and alternatively activated (M2) phenotypes, recent advances have revealed a spectrum of macrophage activation states that extend beyond this dichotomy. The complex interplay of signaling pathways, transcriptional regulators, and epigenetic modifications orchestrates macrophage polarization, allowing them to respond to various stimuli dynamically.

Autophagy regulates age-related delayed jawbone regeneration and decreased osteoblast osteogenesis by degrading FABP3.

FASEB J

July 2024

Department of Implantology & Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital and Dental School of Tongji University, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Tooth Restoration and Regeneration, Shanghai, China.

The regenerative ability of limb bones after injury decreases during aging, but whether a similar phenomenon occurs in jawbones and whether autophagy plays a role in this process remain unclear. Through retrospective analysis of clinical data and studies on a mouse model of jawbone defects, we confirmed the presence of delayed or impaired bone regeneration in the jawbones of old individuals and mice. Subsequently, osteoblasts (OBs) derived from mouse jawbones were isolated, showing reduced osteogenesis in senescent osteoblasts (S-OBs).
