Diabetes can lead to various acute clinical complications, although the occurrence of ophthalmic signs and symptoms is uncommon. Neovascular glaucoma (NG), a rare complication associated with diabetes mellitus, is one such condition. Additionally, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) is a rare complication of intravitreal bevacizumab.

The objective of our study was to determine the frequency of methicillin resistance in coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) and to determine its in-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility to various other routinely used antibiotics. It was a cross sectional study conducted at the department of Microbiology, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from June 2011 to May 2012. The organisms were identified on the basis of colony morphology, Gram staining, catalase, DNAase and slide/tube coagulase tests.

Objective: To assess how the frequency, nature and outcome of road traffic crashes differ during the fasting month of Ramadan.
Methods: The retrospective study was conducted in Karachi and comprised data from the Road Traffic Injury Surveillance Project which entailed information on all road traffic injury victims presenting to Emergency Departments in the city between September 2006 and September 2011. Data was analysed to find the frequency of road traffic crashes according to time of incident, road user group and survival.

Objective: To determine the frequency of isolation of coagulase-negative staphylococci and their resistance to methicillin over a period of time.
Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, from June 2009 to May 2012, and comprised clinical samples mostly from patients admitted to the intensive care unit. They were inoculated onto appropriate culture media depending upon the specimen.
Inhalational insulin was withdrawn from the market due to its potential to produce airway hyper-reactivity and bronchoconstriction. So the present study was designed to explore the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity of guinea pigs and protective effects of salbutamol and beclomethasone against insulin induced airway hyper-responsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle of guinea pig. Effects of varying concentrations of insulin (10(-7) to 10(-3) M), insulin pretreated with fixed concentration of salbutamol (10(-7) M) and beclomethasone (10(-6) M) were studied on isolated tracheal tissue of guinea pig by constructing cumulative concentration response curves.

Objective: To evaluate the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity and the protective effects of beclomethasone and ipratropium against insulin-induced airway hyperresponsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle in a guinea pig model.
Materials And Methods: The trachea of each guinea pig was excised; one end of the tracheal strip was attached to the hook of the oxygen tube of a tissue bath and the other end was connected to a research-grade isometric force displacement transducer. The effects of varying concentrations of insulin (10(-7) to 10(-3)M) and insulin pretreated with a fixed concentration of beclomethasone (10(-6)M) and ipratropium (10(-6)M) on the isolated tracheal tissue were studied by constructing cumulative concentration-response curves.

Objective: To measure and correlate the levels of thiamine and dyslipidaemia in microalbuminuric diabetics.
Methods: Cross-sectional comparative study was conducted at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, from January 2009 to December 2010, and comprised 60 known diabetic patients, who were inducted from diabetic clinics of Rawalpindi. These patients were divided into three equal groups, with group I (n=20) being normal healthhy individuals, group II comprised of microalbuminurics type 2 diabetics (n=20) and group III (n=20) were macroalbuminuric type 2 diabetics, based on their albumin excretion rate.

Neurobiological mechanisms invoking the release of endogenous opioids and depression of stress hormone release are believed to be the basis of acupuncture analgesia. This study compared plasma beta-endorphin and cortisol levels with self assessment scores of intensity of pain, before and after 10 days of electro-acupuncture treatment in patients suffering from chronic pain as a result of osteoarthritis knees. Forty patients of either sex over 40 years with primary osteoarthritis knee were recruited into a single-blinded, sham-controlled study.
