Transoral odontoidectomy followed by occipitocervical fixation is a widely used approach to relieve ventral compressions at the craniovertebral junction. Despite the large amount of literature on this approach and its complications, odontoid process regeneration and causing the worsening of symptoms of brainstem dysfunction and upper cervical cord were not found in the English literature. We report the case of odontoid regeneration in a 12-year-old girl.

Article Synopsis
  • Enteric fever, caused by multidrug-resistant Salmonella, is a growing public health issue in developing countries, particularly in Pakistan and India, prompting the use of WHO reserve antibiotics like azithromycin.
  • A study of 782 blood culture isolates from a large North Indian hospital revealed significant resistance rates of S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi, with 6.1% resistance to co-trimoxazole and 2.73% multidrug resistance in S. Typhi.
  • The findings emphasize the need for continuous monitoring of antibiotic resistance and implementation of water, sanitation, hygiene, and vaccination measures to control the spread of enteric fever.

Introduction: In last few years, several studies have revealed the remarkable stability of extracellular microRNAs (miRNAs) circulating in the blood or excreted in the urine and underscored their key importance as biomarkers of certain diseases. Since miRNA in urinary sediment is relatively stable and easily quantified, it has the potential to be developed as a biomarker for disease diagnosis and monitoring. Identification of serum and urinary levels of certain miRNAs may assist in the diagnosis and assessment of disease activity in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS).

Context: BRAF mutation has been extensively studied and associated with various tumors. Targeted therapeutic intervention against BRAF mutation is established modality against many such tumors. Various studies have estimated that the prevalence of BRAF mutation in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is 5%-25%.

Primary spinal glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is very uncommon while an intramedullary spinal GBM with intracranial metastasis is rarely heard of. A 23-year-old male presented with bilateral paraplegia associated with bowel and bladder incontinence. Craniospinal radiograph showed an intramedullary spinal mass lesion, for which he underwent laminectomy and histopathology revealed GBM.

Meningitis is a common and life-threatening infection of the central nervous system (CNS) in infants with long-term and disabling sequelae like hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is treated by diverting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) either to another body cavity (via CSF shunt) or externally (via CSF drain) which are prone to infection. Though rare, () is a known pathogen in device-associated CNS infections and has been reported in both, infants and adults.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ahmed valve implantation in childhood glaucoma associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS).

Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent primary Ahmed valve implantation in childhood glaucoma associated with SWS. The outcome measures were success rate (Intraocular pressure (IOP) >5 and <21 mm Hg without additional surgical maneuver), and operative complications.

Invasive fungal infection (IFI) in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a common phenomenon in developing countries. In a systematic study (Dual Inducing Differentiating agents-Indian Trial: DID-IT) using dual differentiating agents (ATO and ATRA) in 98 APL patients at our center we report 18.3% incidence of IFI (n-18).

Background: Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) has traditionally been classified on electron microscopy (EM) into different types based on the location of the immune complexes. Sethi et al. subsequently suggested a more relevant etiology-based and clinically useful classification based on immunofluorescence.

Purpose: Dose received by organs at risk (OAR) in high-dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) for locally advanced cervical cancer impacts the late toxicity profile of the treatment. In the present study, we analyzed the inter-fraction variations of the minimum dose received by the most irradiated 2cc volumes (D) of the OARs in ICBT.

Methods And Materials: This prospective study included 40 patients with cervical cancer stage FIGO IIB-IVA treated with HDR ICBT and concomitant chemoradiotherapy with Computerized tomography (CT)- based three-dimensional planning.

Article Synopsis
  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cardiovascular disease influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, with high altitude (HA) increasing risk but lacking clear molecular understanding.
  • This study investigated gene expression in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) patients from different altitudes and identified significant differences, revealing 378 genes at sea level and 875 genes at HA linked to DVT.
  • Analysis highlighted pathways related to haemostasis and platelet activation, with "response to hypoxia" emerging as key; specific hypoxia-responsive genes might help explain the development of DVT in high-altitude conditions.

The objective of this study was to determine whether [F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scan could predict the pathological response in esophageal carcinoma after surgery in patients receiving neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiation (NACCRT) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). A randomized prospective study was carried out from March 2014 to October 2016; thirty patients of histopathologically proven, locally advanced, potentially operable carcinoma esophagus comprising both squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were randomized into NACCRT and NACT arms equally. Both groups had pretreatment FDG-PET-computed tomography (CT) scan and repeat scan after 5-6 weeks of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT).

Background: Fronto-Temporo-Orbito-Zygomatic (FTOZ) craniotomy has progressed from its humble beginnings. Numerous variations including one piece, two piece and even three piece FTOZ craniotomies have been described. The ideal technique still remains elusive and its use remains restricted to a few specialised centres even when benefits far outweigh the surgical difficulties.

Background: "Code blue" (CB) is a popular hospital emergency code, which is used by hospitals to alert their emergency response team of any cardiorespiratory arrest. The factors affecting the outcomes of emergencies are related to both the patient and the nature of the event. The primary objective was to analyze the survival rate and factors associated with survival and also practical problems related to functioning of a CB system (CBS).
