Bridging form and function: A bilateral auricular prosthesis.

J Indian Prosthodont Soc

December 2022

Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Army Dental Center (Research and Referral), New Delhi, India.

Unfortunate loss or absence of an ear has a far-reaching impact on an individual psyche. Auricular defects are seen commonly due to trauma, congenital abnormalities, and malignancies which result in disfigurment of the pinna. Rehabilitation of an auricular defect with a custom-made auricular prosthesis improves social acceptance and self-confidence in an individual.

The 'Roman emperor' Sponsian is known only from an assemblage of coins allegedly found in Transylvania (Romania) in 1713. They are very unlike regular Roman coins in style and manufacture, with various enigmatic features including bungled legends and historically mixed motifs, and have long been dismissed as poorly made forgeries. Here we present non-destructive imaging and spectroscopic results that show features indicative of authenticity.

Comparative Somatic Variant Analysis of a Rare Case with Concurrent Oral Leukoplakia and Oral Submucosal Fibrosis.

Cytogenet Genome Res

December 2022

Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory, Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus, Hyderabad, India.

Oral leukoplakia (OL) and oral submucosal fibrosis (OSMF) are precancerous conditions with common etiologies but with different risks for oral cancer (OC) progression. In rare cases, both conditions occur in the same patient and provide an opportunity for understanding the common and distinctive variants upon exposure of genetically identical normal cells to the same carcinogen(s). We performed exome sequencing of a patient with OL (hyperplasia, but no dysplasia) and OSMF (grade II) in the opposite cheeks using blood DNA as the reference genome.

October 2022

State Key Laboratory of Military Stomatology & National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases & Shaanxi Engineering Research Center for Dental Materials and Advanced Manufacture, Department of Implantology, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, China.

A functional vasculature for survival remains a challenge for tissue regeneration, which is indispensable for oxygen and nutrient supply. Utilizing mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to alleviate tissue ischemia and repair dysfunctional or damaged endothelium is a promising strategy. Compared to other populations of MSCs, adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) possess a more significant proangiogenic potential and are abundantly available.

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China. Electronic address:

The increasing morbidity of oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontitis and oral cancer, has greatly compromised the life quality of humans. With the rapid development of biomaterials and nanotechnology, various biomaterials-based systems have been reported to treat oral diseases. As the biocompatible, biodegradable and bioadhesive polysaccharide biomaterials, chitosan and its derivatives have also been widely used for the oral disease therapy, either as the antibacterial agents, drug delivery carriers or tissue engineering scaffolds.

Paradigm shift in infection control practices in dental clinics in response to COVID-19 among dental professionals in Thailand.

Front Oral Health

September 2022

Center of Excellence on Oral Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Infection control (IC) practice routines depend mainly on knowledge, perception, and awareness of a disease among dental professionals. However, there has been no report on the perception, awareness, and adaptability to the new practice guidelines of Thai dental professionals (dentists, dental nurses, dental assistants, and dental technicians) to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to investigate how dental professionals in Thailand perceive and are aware of COVID-19, and how they have changed their IC practices in response to the pandemic.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the world; and the US military changed with it. Although this virus presents with a wide spectrum of disease progression (no symptoms to acute respiratory distress syndrome leading to death), its impact extends beyond health outcomes. At the time of this study, numerous research and development projects were underway to develop a COVID-19 vaccine or other treatment modalities; however, there were no Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved vaccines or medical therapeutics that definitively provided a cure.

Warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infections, and myelokathexis (WHIM) syndrome (WS) is a combined immunodeficiency caused by gain-of-function mutations in the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) gene. We characterize a unique international cohort of 66 patients, including 57 (86%) cases previously unreported, with variable clinical phenotypes. Of 17 distinct CXCR4 genetic variants within our cohort, 11 were novel pathogenic variants affecting 15 individuals (23%).

November 2022

National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases & State Key Laboratory of Military Stomatology & Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases & Department of Prosthodontics, School of Stomatology, the Fourth Military Medical University.

This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effect of dual-cured resin luting agents with different initiator systems on the color stability of glass ceramic restorations by simulating various clinical glass ceramic restorations. Three commonly used shades from each of the two dual-cured resin luting agents with an amine-initiation system or without it were studied. The individual specimens had different translucency and thickness and were artificially aged using a xenon light aging machine.

The manuscript uses the previously published literature and highlights the benefits of active-matrix metalloproteinase (aMMP)-8 chairside/point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic tools as adjunctive measures in oral and systemic diseases. Previous studies suggest that as a biomarker, aMMP-8 is more precise than total MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-13, MMP-7, MMP-1, calprotectin, myeloperoxidase (MPO), human neutrophil elastase (HNE), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, and bleeding of probing (BOP). Therefore, aMMP-8 could be implemented as the needed key biomarker for the new disease classification for both periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

March 2022

Department of Preventive Dentistry, College of Dentistry, Jouf University, Sakaka 72345, Saudi Arabia.

Chronic periodontitis and diabetes mellitus share a two-way relationship, the common factor being the inflammatory-mediated pathway, and various cytokines are released during this inflammatory cascade, one of which being matrix metalloproteinase-9. The aim of this study was to identify whether the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 are increased due to type-II diabetes mellitus in chronic periodontitis patients. It was an observational, analytical, case-control study.
