Subsequent to dental extraction, residual ridge resorption manifests as an inherent biological process unfolding over an approximate duration of one year. Surgical resection of the lower jaw due to the presence of a benign or malignant tumor is the most frequent cause of mandibular deviation. Location and extent of the tumor decide the surgical modality of mandibulectomy to be performed. The clinician must wait for an adequate span of time for completion of the healing and acceptance of the osseous graft before considering a definitive prosthesis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of using a sublingual gland flap for reconstructing surgical defects after sequestrectomy in patients with MRONJ, osteomyelitis, and osteoradionecrosis of the mandible.
  • - Six patients (3 males and 3 females, ages 45-71) underwent the procedure under local anesthesia and were monitored for outcomes including complete healing, pain, and the risk of infection over 1 to 6 months.
  • - Results showed that all patients achieved complete healing without complications such as pain, inflammation, or postoperative infections, indicating that this reconstruction method is effective for small to medium-sized oral defects.

Insertion tendinosis of stylomandibular ligament (SML) or Ernest syndrome is a very rare and under reported head and neck pain disorder. The pain originates from the insertion of stylomandibular region and radiates to the temple, lateral side of the neck and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The diagnosis is confirmed by palpation of SML and local anesthetic block at the insertion of SML.

Fractures of the mandibular condyle lead to displacement of the condyle and loss of the height of the ramus. A retromandibular approach is the most commonly used for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of such fractures. We aimed to compare the complications associated with a retromandibular transparotid approach with a retromandibular transmasseteric anterior parotid (TMAP) approach for their management.

Objectives: This prospective study aimed to analyze 3-dimensional changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complex with a synergistic effect of functional jaw orthopedics using a fixed functional appliance and low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy.

Methods: Forty patients with skeletal class II malocclusion were randomly assigned to 4 groups (2 control groups and 2 test groups) of 10 patients each. After insertion of the fixed functional appliance, the test group was stimulated with LIPUS therapy in the TMJ region bilaterally for 20 minutes daily for first 10 days and thereafter at least 3 times per week until complete mandibular advancement was achieved.

Traditionally, arthrocentesis involves insertion of 2 needles into the joint space of which one acts as an inflow port and the other as the outflow port. These 2 needles must triangulate and be exactly placed in the upper joint space for the procedure to be effective. Due to the difficulty in maintaining the needle position, single-puncture arthrocentesis is gaining popularity.
