Chromosomal passenger proteins including Aurora B, Survivin, and Borealin/Dasra B, also called CDCA8/FLJ10468, are known to play crucial roles during mitosis and cell division. Inappropriate chromosomal segregation and cell division may cause auneuploidy leading to cancer. However, it is still unclear how the expression of chromosomal passenger proteins may be linked to cancer.

Clipping of the appendix induced cardiac arrest during appendectomy under spinal anesthesia.

Bradycardia is commonly seen in high spinal anesthesia, however, evolution of cardiac arrest from sudden onset of severe bradycardia is infrequent. Prompt recognization and resuscitative measures are of paramount importance because they may insure a complete recovery without sequela as an aftermath. We report herein a case of severe sinus bradycardia induced by clipping of the appendix during appendectomy under spinal anesthesia with the sensory block up to T5 dermatome.

Post-dural puncture arm and upper back pain--a report of two cases.

The typical postdural puncture headache manifests as postural frontal, frontotemporal, or occipital headache, which is worsened by ambulation, and improved by decubitus. Accompanying symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and neck stiffness. Various rare presentations after dural puncture, such as upper back pain, arm pain, thoracic pain, bowel and bladder dysfunction have been sparsely reported.

Results of arthroscopic reduction and percutaneous fixation for acute displaced scaphoid fractures.

Purpose: This study used percutaneous techniques augmented by simultaneous wrist arthroscopy to visualize the fracture and thus confirm the fracture alignment and reduction and also to assesses the concurrent associated ligament injuries.

The interaction effect of perioperative cotreatment with dextromethorphan and intravenous lidocaine on pain relief and recovery of bowel function after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Both dextromethorphan (DM) and IV lidocaine improve postoperative pain relief. In the present study, we evaluated the interaction of DM and IV lidocaine on pain management after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). One-hundred ASA physical status I or II patients scheduled for LC were randomized into four equal groups to receive either: (a) chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM) intramuscular injection (IM) 20 mg and IV normal saline (N/S) (group C); (b) DM 40 mg IM and IV N/S (group DM); (c) CPM 20 mg IM and IV lidocaine 3 mg .

We report a rare case with acquired Fanconi syndrome caused by mixed Chinese herbs, initially presenting as waddling gait and lower limb muscle atrophy. From a series of investigations, proximal renal tubule injury with functional defects and Chinese herb nephropathy were discovered. Hypophosphatemic osteomalacia and type II muscle fiber atrophy shown in muscle biopsy of left quadriceps may be associated with the sequelae of ingestion of mixed crude Chinese herbs.

Dorsal capsulodesis and ligamentoplasty for chronic pre-dynamic and dynamic scapholunate dissociation.

Scapholunate (SL) instability is the most common cause of carpal instability. Pre-dynamic and dynamic type SL instability is difficult to diagnose and treat. This series reviews 17 soldiers with pre-dynamic or dynamic SL instability diagnosed by midcarpal arthroscopy and treated with dorsal capsulodesis and augmentation ligamentoplasty with partial dorsal radiocarpal (DRC) ligament procedure between 1997 and 2000.

Early isolated triangular fibrocartilage complex tears: management by arthroscopic repair.

Background: Tears in the traumatic triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) are generally caused by falling accidents with pronated, hyperextended wrists, or by distraction injuries that pull the ulnar side of the wrist out of place. Tears in the triangular fibrocartilage complex often appear in association with ulnar wrist pain and limited wrist function in work or sport. This study addressed the arthroscopic repair of peripheral tears in the TFCC, in a sample of 37 patients who were undergoing TFCC repair by wrist arthroscopy.

The electromechanical effects of 3-[[4-(2-methoxy phenyl)piperazin-1-yl]methyl]-5-(methylthio)-2,3-dihydroimidazo[1,2-c]quinazoline (DL-017), a newly synthesized quinazoline-derived antihypertensive agent, on mammalian cardiac tissues were evaluated. In driven canine Purkinje fibers, DL-017 decreased twitch tension, the maximal rate of upstroke of the action potential (Vmax), and intracellular Na+ activity (a(i)Na) in a concentration-dependent manner. Hemodynamic changes caused by venous gas embolism in dogs: comparisons among air, carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Background: The volume of a bulky venous air emboli (VAE) can be estimated based on the calibration curve generated by injections of minute amount of air into the right atrium (RA) of dogs. We speculated that in patients similar VAE calibration curves could be generated using CO2 injections. As part of pre-clinical evaluation of the usefulness of CO2 injection, the present study was designed to determine whether injection of CO2 into the RA would cause less hemodynamic changes in dogs as compared with that of air or O2.

CD34, CD117, and actin expression in phyllodes tumor of the breast.

Background: This study investigated the immunophenotypic patterns of CD34, CD117 (a product of the c-kit proto-oncogene), and actin (HHF35) in benign and malignant phyllodes tumors (PTs). We correlated the expression of CD34, CD117, and actin with histopathological grade.

Materials And Results: We analyzed 19 cases (7 benign and 12 malignant cases) of PTs using immunohistochemical analysis.

Hereditary cyclic neutropenia in the male members of a Chinese family with inverted Y chromosome.

We describe four male members of a Chinese family, including the father and three sons, with hereditary cyclic neutropenia. These patients had all developed cyclic neutropenia in childhood with a cycle of around 21 d. Recurrent mucosa and skin infections with fever had occurred frequently, but gradually decreased in severity on reaching adulthood.
