Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), while uncommon, can have a significant impact on appearance and quality of life, especially when they form in prominent areas such as the nose dorsum. We discuss a case of a 29-year-old woman who developed a benign PNST on the right side of her nasal ala. This tumor gradually grew, impairing her face appearance.

The Incidences of KEL Blood Group Antigens and Phenotypes in Southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Int J Gen Med

September 2024

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: Jazan Province in Saudi Arabia is notable for its high prevalence of inherited hemoglobinopathies, including sickle cell disease and thalassemia, necessitating frequent blood transfusions for affected individuals. To mitigate risks such as RBC alloimmunization and hemolytic transfusion reactions, ensuring blood compatibility is crucial. The Kell (KEL) blood group system, pivotal alongside the ABO and RH systems, encompasses multiple antigens implicated in these complications.

Early-onset, severe retinal dystrophy can be isolated or syndromic, presenting as part of an underlying systemic disease. Mainzer-Saldino syndrome, a rare systemic ciliopathy characterized by skeletal and renal disease, is caused by recessive mutations in the intraflagellar transport 140 chlamydomonas homologue (IFT140) gene. We present a series of 13 cases of early-onset retinal dysfunction with confirmed IFT140 mutations from 8 unrelated Saudi families belonging to 3 well-known tribes.

Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by α-galactosidase A gene mutations. Its global incidence ranges from 1:40,000 to 1:170,000. This expert review evaluates the available guidelines, the status of diagnosed but untreated patients with FD, and the challenges in diagnosing and managing FD in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

  • It often appears sporadically or in individuals with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), with potential development linked to trauma or surgical procedures.
  • The article presents a case of a 41-year-old male who developed DF in the lower pole of his kidney after undergoing partial nephrectomy, marking a notable instance of two different tumors occurring in the same kidney.

  • Nonoperative management (NOM) is increasingly used for blunt splenic injuries (BSIs) in Germany, showing high success rates even in severe cases, with guidelines supporting this practice.
  • A study analyzed data from 2,782 patients with BSIs, revealing that 57.5% received NOM while angioembolization (ANGIO) was used in only 1.0% of cases, mainly for less severe injuries.
  • The findings suggest a disconnect between clinical practice and guidelines, as more severe injuries typically led to splenectomy instead of ANGIO, highlighting the potential need for improved local treatment protocols.

Unlabelled:                                                                  Abstract Background: Few studies have addressed the effects of biological therapies on laboratory outcomes and changes in FEV1 in patients with severe asthma (SA) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). We aimed to study the effect of three biological therapies on laboratory outcomes and FEV1 in Saudi Arabian patients with SA and CRS.

Methods: From March to September 2022, a retrospective observational cohort study was undertaken at the severe asthma clinics of the Armed Forces Hospital-Southern Region (AFHSR) and King Khalid University Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia, to delineate the effects of 3 biological therapies (benralizumab, dupilumab, and omalizumab) in adults with SA and concomitant CRS in terms of FEV1 and laboratory parameters (serum IgE and eosinophilic counts).

  • - Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder where individuals have a mutated form of hemoglobin, leading to a range of complications like osteomyelitis, particularly affecting bones like the tibia and femur.
  • - This study aimed to identify the signs that help diagnose osteomyelitis in pediatric patients with SCD who were experiencing vaso-occlusive crises or suspected osteomyelitis.
  • - Involving 28 children, the study found that most blood cultures showed no growth, but some did have infections like salmonella. Key indicators such as leukocytosis and high ferritin levels were linked to osteomyelitis, with diagnostic imaging revealing certain cases of bone edema.
