Environmental exposures including poor air quality and extreme temperatures are exacerbated by climate change and are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Concomitantly, the delivery of health care generates substantial atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to the climate crisis. Therefore, cardiac imaging teams must be aware not only of the adverse cardiovascular health effects of climate change, but also the downstream environmental ramifications of cardiovascular imaging.

A review of mechanism of action of outdoor exposure in preventing myopia incidence and progression.

Int J Ophthalmol

June 2024

Division of Pharmacy & Optometry, School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester, Manchester M139PL, United Kingdom.

Various studies have suggested several environmental, pharmacological, medical, and optical interventions and some are in use but their efficacy in myopia control may be transient, and the cellular, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms involved unclear. Daylight exposure is currently regarded as an effective and enduring strategy in the control of myopia development and progression. However, the mechanism behind the effect of outdoor exposure and its association with genetic predisposition and other relatively more significant environmental factors on myopia is still a conundrum.

Article Synopsis
  • The text highlights a lack of knowledge and guidelines on physical activity and lifestyle measures for heart transplantation (HTx) recipients, despite the procedure's long history.
  • It emphasizes the need for tailored prevention and rehabilitation strategies to enhance physical capacity, quality of life, and survival for these patients.
  • The statement calls for a multidisciplinary approach to care, starting early post-transplant and continuing throughout the patients' journey, as HTx recipients have unique rehabilitation needs compared to other heart-related patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited information exists on the physical activity and lifestyle measures for heart transplantation (HTx) recipients, despite the history of HTx spanning over 50 years without established guidelines for prevention and rehabilitation.
  • The scientific statement aims to highlight the significance of prevention and rehabilitation post-HTx and identify both modifiable and non-modifiable factors that can enhance physical capacity, quality of life, and survival for these patients.
  • A multidisciplinary approach is essential for developing tailored prevention and rehabilitation programs that begin early after HTx and continue throughout the patient's recovery journey.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the anatomy of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) in 335 patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to understand variations based on age, sex, and dental status.
  • - Findings showed the average dimensions of the NPC and its shapes were consistent across patients, with funnel, Y, and round shapes being the most common.
  • - Results indicated that males had larger buccal bone plates (BBP), and both NPC dimensions increased with age, while BBP width decreased after the loss of maxillary central incisors.

To provide a comprehensive review of nonsurgical approaches for the management of Warthin's tumors (WTs) and evaluate their safety and efficacy as alternatives to surgical intervention. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases using specific keywords related to WT and nonsurgical treatments. Studies published before 2012, non-English publications, and mixed methodology articles were excluded.

September 2024

Departemnt of Neuroscience, Section of Neurosurgery, King Abdul Aziz Medical City, Ministry of the National Guard Health Affairs, King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, King Abdul Aziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Objectives: Central nervous system tuberculosis (TB) (CNS-TB) can occur in several forms, including intracranial tuberculoma, tuberculous brain abscess, TB meningitis (TBM), and spinal TB. Early treatment can save lives and prevent severe neurological complications. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and post-treatment outcomes of patients with CNS-TB and identify factors associated with poor outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The text discusses a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium from the genus that causes various hospital-acquired infections, such as UTIs, pneumonia, and wound infections.
  • - It has developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, including the powerful carbapenem class, and has a rare association with gas gangrene but has never been documented to cause pseudoaneurysm (PA) of the transplant renal artery.
  • - The report details an unusual case of a multi-drug resistant strain leading to gas formation and mycotic PA of the transplant renal artery, ultimately resulting in severe complications requiring the removal of the kidney graft.

Article Synopsis
  • Underutilization of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in patients who have had a myocardial infarction (MI) remains a problem, especially in areas with low adoption rates, highlighting the need to identify risk factors for sudden cardiac death (SCD).
  • In a study of post-MI patients, a 1-year mortality rate was found at 5.9%, with 76.5% of cardiac deaths attributed to SCD, and significant risk factors identified included age, left ventricular ejection fraction, female gender, and regional demographics.
  • The study recommends that post-MI patients exhibiting these high-risk characteristics should be referred to specialists for further assessment and potential ICD implantation to help prevent further fatalities.

Background: Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) and mitral annular calcification (MAC) are associated with various cardiovascular diseases and may influence systemic vascular pathologies. However, their relationship with endothelial dysfunction and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) remains poorly elucidated. This research aims to explore the associations between MAC, aortic valve sclerosis (AVS), and markers of vascular dysfunction, specifically CIMT and endothelial function.

The small intestinal diaphragms are a rare condition characterized by focal or diffuse luminal narrowing in the small intestine. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been associated with the development of small intestinal diaphragms, particularly in long-term and high-dose users. In the current report, a Saudi adult female complained of abnormal bowel motions, which caused severe abdominal pain.

  • Calcinosis cutis is a rare condition where calcium salts build up in the skin and underlying tissues, leading to painful lumps and restricted movement, as seen in a 16-year-old girl with recurrent deposits on her right thumb.
  • Initial diagnosis involved normal lab tests, but imaging revealed calcifications, and a biopsy confirmed the condition.
  • Treatment focused on conservative methods such as physiotherapy, antibiotics, and pain management, with plans for potential excision and a need for more research on long-term treatment outcomes.

Background: The rate of cesarean section is increasing from 15% to 40% in recent years. The type of delivery influences the hormonal, emotional and mental health of the mother, which correlates positively or negatively with the health benefits of the newborn. There have been many published studies on kangaroo mother care for mothers undergoing elective cesarean section, but there is still a lack of understanding about emergency cesarean section.
