The United States is undergoing a transformation in the way pain is viewed and treated. This transformation affects pain education, as some degree of disconnect will be expected between what is taught in classroom settings and what learners observe in clinical settings. We term this disconnect "didactic dissonance" and propose a novel process to harness it as a learning tool to further pain education.

Abstract: This is a 10-year review of The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (JTACS) literature related to health care disparities, health care inequities, and patient outcomes. A retrospective review of articles published in JTACS between January 1, 2013, and July 15, 2022, was performed. Articles screened included both adult and pediatric trauma populations.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to discuss disparities in breast health care access and outcomes related to race, gender, cultural diversity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geographic location, and disability. The authors recognize the complexity of eliminating inequalities in health care but are optimistic that all patients will one day have equal access to care through dialogue, acknowledgment, recognition, and action.
Recent Findings: After lung cancer, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among American women.

Vasopressin (AVP) acts as a neurotransmitter and its activity can potentiate respiratory activity. Hypoglossal (XII) motoneurons that innervate the tongue express V1a vasopressin receptors, which are excitatory. Therefore, we hypothesized that V1a receptor activation at XII motoneurons would potentiate inspiratory bursting.

We report a middle-aged female, heterozygous for the R18W novel variant of the SMAD3 gene, with a history of an aortic valve disorder and three aortic valve replacements in a span of 15 years. The patient neither has a history of congenital connective tissue disorders nor any known congenital valvular defects.

Lipid keratopathy (LK) is a rare disease involving lipid deposition in the cornea resulting in corneal opacification. Primary LK can arise sporadically while secondary LK is seen in patients with a history of ocular trauma, medication exposure, infection, inflammation, or disorders resulting in derangements of lipid metabolism. Secondary LK is more common and occurs due to neovascularization.

Introduction: Riding a motorcycle without a helmet represents a public health risk that can result in disabling injuries or death. We aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of helmet use on motorcycle injuries, injury types, and fatalities, to highlight areas requiring future intervention.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study utilizing the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Program Participant Use File between 2017 and 2020 analyzing motorcycle associated injuries and fatalities in adult patients with moderate and severe injury severity score in relation to helmet use.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) constitutes a set of heterogeneous symptoms affecting millions of people worldwide. The associated comorbidities developing in COPD involve dysregulation in physiological pathways resulting from systemic inflammation in respiratory airways. In addition to mentioning the pathophysiology, stages, and consequences of COPD, this paper also defines red blood cell (RBC) indices such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell distribution width, and RBC count.

Background Current methods used to diagnose and prognosticate oropharyngeal cancer have contributed to unfavorable patient survival rates that have not significantly improved for the last several decades. Precision medicine oncology relies on molecular diagnostics and biomarkers to supplement existing methods of detecting and prognosticating cancers. This study evaluated the expression of DJ-1, an oncogene that is implicated in the pathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the most common type of head and neck cancer, to determine its utility as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker.

Introduction: Refractive lens exchange (RLE) patients represent a unique population with a different baseline and set of expectations compared to their cataract counterparts. Visual outcomes and patient satisfaction following RLE with bilateral implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) were assessed in a cohort of patients with presbyopia and without cataract.
Methods: Charts of patients with presbyopia who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted RLE with bilateral implantation of the PanOptix trifocal IOL (toric and non-toric) at a single-surgeon, private practice center from September 2019 to August 2020 were retrospectively reviewed.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare, solid or mixed solid, cystic tumors that generally occur in the sellar and suprasellar regions of the central nervous system along the pituitary stalk near the optic chiasm. Although benign, patients clinically present with symptoms from mass effect or the resultant increase in intracranial pressures. The recurrence rate of craniopharyngiomas is high.

Vaccination has become an essential means of protection for solid tumour patients against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this systematic review, we sought to identify common safety profiles of the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with solid tumours. A search of Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane was conducted for studies in English full-text that reported side-effect data experienced by patients with cancer who were at least 12 years old with solid tumours or a recent history of solid tumours after receiving either one or multiple doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.

During terminal differentiation of the mammalian retina, transcription factors control binary cell fate decisions that generate functionally distinct subtypes of photoreceptor neurons. For instance, Otx2 and RORβ activate the expression of the transcriptional repressor Blimp-1/PRDM1 that represses bipolar interneuron fate and promotes rod photoreceptor fate. Moreover, Otx2 and Crx promote expression of the nuclear receptor Nrl that promotes rod photoreceptor fate and represses cone photoreceptor fate.

Facial cosmetic implants are utilized for definition enhancements in the malar, mandibular, and nasal regions. Though these implants are safe in the majority of patients, notable complications such as implant malpositioning may be seen. More rare but serious complications such as infection, abscess, and intrasinus migration may also occur, such as in this case reported on a 69-year-old female with a history of bilateral malar silicone implants.
