Previous studies have shown that seaweed extracts (HMEs) possess antioxidant properties, but the molecular mechanisms accounting for this activity are not known. Thus, the present study investigated the molecular mechanisms through which HME exerted its antioxidant activity in human mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs). After the isolation of HME, its chemical composition was analyzed with gas chromatography mass spectrometry, indicating that it contained amino acids, organic acids, organic amides, sugar alcohols, saturated fatty acids, hydrogenated diterpene alcohols, and other organic compounds.

Quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) of pathogens in food safety is well established, but steps are being taken to expand this methodology to food spoilage. Parallels can be drawn between the steps involved in a QMRA for pathogens and its application to specific spoilage organisms (SSO). During hazard characterisation for pathogens, the appropriate dose-response model is used to link the hazard level to the health outcome by estimating the probability of illness, resulting from the ingestion of a certain dose of the hazard.

The objective of this study, PLASTOGEST, was to evaluate the risk associated with oligomers and other potentially harmful chemical compounds when consumed by humans through food. This research systematically reviewed existing literature and applies untargeted analysis to assess the fate of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and intentionally added substances (IAS) during in vitro digestion. Polyethylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate oligomers and simulation of real food conditions were used to evaluate migration and how these oligomers behave during in vitro digestion.

A case of Short Root Anomaly (SRA), hypodontia and taurodontism with the associated finding of transverse hemimelia, is presented. Although there is no documented evidence of a link between SRA and hemimelia, the shared genetic, environmental and metabolic factors suggest the possibility of a common underlying mechanism.

Background: The aetiology of increased mean platelet volume in dogs is currently uncertain. Our aim was to investigate the aetiology of increased mean platelet volume in dogs with and without thrombocytopenia.

Methods: The database of a teaching hospital was retrospectively searched for dogs with increased mean platelet volume (>14.

Article Synopsis
  • Genome scans allow researchers to examine genetic variations linked to specific traits, but correlating individual genes with larger functional groups can be challenging.
  • This study focused on around 600,000 SNPs from European seabass populations to identify 96 candidate genes, highlighting the importance of epigenetic influences and connections to domestication-related traits.
  • The research found interactions among candidate genes, particularly in pathways related to "chromatin organization," indicating a significant role for epigenetic mechanisms in the domestication process of European seabass.

Key Clinical Message: In cases adjacent to critical structures, such as the internal carotid artery, surgeons should meticulously explore the feasibility of surgery before declaring the neoplasm unresectable.

Abstract: Salvage treatment for locally recurrent carcinoma of the nasopharynx constitutes a unique challenge. Surgery remains the gold standard treatment modality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atypical parathyroid tumors are a type of parathyroid growth that may or may not be cancerous, making their behavior unpredictable.
  • - Diagnosing these tumors before surgery can be tricky, which poses challenges for medical professionals.
  • - Surgeons may lean towards more aggressive surgical treatment if there are any signs that the tumor could be malignant.

Purpose: To investigate whether and how extra-synovial autografts can enhance the reconstruction of chronic and large rotator cuff tears in a rabbit subscapularis model.

Methods: Twenty rabbits were used to create a large subscapularis tear bilaterally. Six weeks later, the right shoulder of each rabbit was operated to repair the tear with an extra-synovial autograft, whereas the left shoulder did not undergo any surgery.

Key Clinical Message: Dental fusion should be included in differential diagnosis when panoramic radiograph reveals changes in tooth shape or size. The use of specialized dental photographic techniques can augment the dentists' knowledge and awareness of such conditions.

Abstract: Dental fusion of impacted teeth may show up as a change in tooth shape and size on the first radiographic examination.

The increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in adults with congenital heart disease raises significant questions regarding its management. The unique underlying anatomic and physiological background further adds to the difficulty in eliminating the AF burden in these patients. Herein, we provide an overview of the current knowledge on the pathophysiology and risk factors for AF in adult congenital heart disease, with a special focus on the existing challenges in AF ablation.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and the importance of preperitoneal vas deferens (VD) infiltration in high-risk prostate cancer (PCa).

Patients And Methods: In this prospectively designed study, we included 332 high-risk PCa patients with a Briganti score >5%, who were treated by robot-assisted radical prostatectomy between July 2017 and February 2022 at the Urology Department, SLK Kliniken Heilbronn. In addition to the standard histological analysis of the distal VD, which was attached to the prostate specimen, we analysed the infiltration status of preperitoneal VD in this cohort.

Color polymorphism is a classic study system for evolutionary genetics. One of the most color-polymorphic animal taxa is mollusks, but the investigation of the genetic basis of color determination is often hindered by their life history and the limited availability of genetic resources. Here, we report on the discovery of shell color polymorphism in a much-used model species, the great pond snail .

Determination of plastic polyester oligomers in real samples and their bioeffects.

EFSA J

November 2023

Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece; Biomic_AUTh, Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation (CIRI-AUTH), Balkan Center, B1.4, Thessaloniki, 10th km Thessaloniki-Thermi Rd P.O. Plastics are ubiquitously, becoming part of our everyday life. Recently, the issue of human exposure to micro- and nanoplastic particles and potentially resulting toxicological consequences has been broached, triggered by the discovery of microplastics in foodstuff and dietary exposure via contaminated food and beverages. Within this EU-FORA fellowship project, a determination and quantification of plastic polyester plastics oligomers in food samples was performed to assess exposure at these categories of 'nanoplastics', evaluating them as potential contaminants or as indicators and marker compounds of the exposure to specific nanoplastics/microplastics from polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Gene function conservation is crucial in molecular ecology, especially for key traits like growth and maturation in teleost fish. The and genes are known to influence age-at-maturity in Atlantic salmon, but their impact on other fish species is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the association of and in the domestication of gilthead seabream and European seabass, both undergoing selective breeding for growth-related traits in the Mediterranean.

Rise and fall: Results of a multidisciplinary study and 5-year long monitoring of conservation translocation of the European ground squirrel.

Biodivers Data J

June 2022

Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, Sofia, Bulgaria Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds Sofia Bulgaria.

The current publication gives a detailed assessment of the results from a population reinforcement of a European ground squirrel's () colony in south-eastern Bulgaria. The reinforcement was planned and implemented along with multidisciplinary research of the adaptation process (including radiotelemetry, parasitological study and assessment of the stress in the animals) and regular monitoring (yearly burrow counting). Although the donor and recipient populations were genetically similar, morphometrical data indicated variations in the body size probably due to the difference in population densities in the two sites.
