Conclusion: The reduced caliber of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) on the affected side in patients with sudden unilateral profound hearing loss (SUPHL) may reflect a perfusion deficit which, combined to a lesser degree with anatomic abnormalities in the vertebrobasilar system, would be implicated in the pathogenesis of SUPHL.
Objective: To identify existing hemodynamic disturbances and anatomic abnormalities in patients with SUPHL using digital subtraction angiography.
Material And Methods: Ten patients aged 18-66 years and a control group of 25 subjects were included in the study.

The purpose of this study was to provide evidence about the existence of a coxsackie B outbreak in Greece in 2002 by comparing data of laboratory confirmed coxsackie B recent infections in northern Greece between 1998-2001 with data from 2002. The infections were confirmed serologically, using the indirect immunofluorescence method detecting IgM antibodies for coxsackie B1-B6 viruses. Sera from 2701 patients residents of northern Greece who were suspected to be suffering from coxsackie B virus infections were examined: 2056 between 1998 and 2001, and 645 in 2002.

A traumatic avulsion of the flexor tendon at the musculotendinous junction in nonamputated digits is a very rare injury. We present a 14-year-old girl who sustained a longitudinal, tensile, injurious force directly to the flexor pollicis longus tendon after an open thenar injury resulting in its avulsion at the musculotendinous junction. In an effort to minimize soft-tissue damage and preserve the transverse ligament of the carpus the tendon was retrieved through a separate forearm incision.

Aim: The estimation of peak expiratory flow (PEF) in children is a very easy and practical way to check lung function and helps in the diagnosis, treatment follow-up and evaluation of the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Methods: Using a Mini-Wright flowmeter (Clement Clarke International Ltd, England), we studied the Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) of 7,067 healthy Greek children of age range 6-17 years. All the children have a height ranging between mean value+/-2 Standard Deviations for age and sex.

Stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous disorders such as cardiovascular diseases or neurodegeneration. The extensive overlap between diseases attributed to stress and oxidative damage is indicative of their potential relationship. We hereby study the influence of alpha-tocopherol (alpha-toc) on the development of stress biomarkers (morphological and biochemical), on specific biomarkers of radical insult (lipid peroxidation, oxidized proteins, or glutathione content in brain and liver), as well as on drug metabolism.

During the last decade an increasing number of reports describe the roles of active oxygen species in the development or exacerbation of various kinds of diseases. Antioxidants are of great interest because of their involvement in important biological and industrial processes. They have been found to possess anticancer, anti-cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory and many other activities.

The threat posed by emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases and, more recently, by the intentional release of infectious agents in a susceptible population, has been receiving considerable attention at the national and international levels. Public health efforts to strengthen disease detection, surveillance and control have been intensified. However, clinicians and clinical microbiology laboratories play an important role in the early detection of disease, the identification of the putative agent, and notification of the appropriate authorities.

A 31-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for investigation of left lower limb thrombophlebitis. History, physical examination, and laboratory investigations led to the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), complicated by secondary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Treatment included steroids, azathioprine, aspirin, and low molecular weight heparin.

Somatostatin-producing endocrine tumors are rare neoplasms usually arising in the pancreas and duodenum and they account for less than 1% of all gastrointestinal endocrine tumors. Besides somatostatinoma syndrome, which is characterized by diabetes mellitus, steatorrhea and cholelithiasis, patients with somatostatin-producing endocrine tumors commonly complain of nonspecific symptoms such as vague abdominal pain, weight loss or changes in bowel habits. Tumor behavior cannot be predicted by histological features alone, and malignancy is determined by the presence of metastases.

Objectives: To compare the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and isokinetic training on fibre type distribution and cross sectional area of the vastus lateralis muscle.
Methods: Twenty four male university students were divided into two equal groups: PNF training and isokinetic training (ISO). The training regimen for the PNF group consisted of three sets of 30 repetitions against maximal resistance, alternating two patterns of sequential movements of the right lower extremity: (a) toe flexion and ankle plantar flexion and eversion; (b) knee extension and hip extension, abduction, and internal rotation.

The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of more than 20 enzymes that are intimately involved in tissue remodelling. These zinc-containing endopeptidases consist of several subsets of enzymes, including collagenase, stromelysins and gelatinases and are involved in the degradation of the extracellullar matrix (ECM) that forms the connective material between cells and around tissues. Disease processes associated with the MMPs are generally related to imbalance between the inhibition and activation of MMPs resulting in excessive degradation of the ECM.

Mimosine is a plant amino-acid which has been reported to block DNA replication in mammalian cells and to arrest cell reversibly towards the end of the G1 phase or at the beginning of the S phase. In this study, 42 mice were infected with T. spiralis a nematode parasite, and treated with the anti-inflammatory compound L-mimosine, to determine if any alteration in the chronic inflammatory state occurred, by investigating the hosts immunological response.

Traumatic laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon complicating a closed tibial shaft fracture is a rare injury pattern. Only 3 such cases have been reported to date in the English literature and all were missed on initial examination. A case of a 17-year-old motorcyclist with an acute laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon resulting from a closed oblique tibial shaft fracture is presented.

The aim of this study was to investigate: 1) the effects of treadmill exercise on plasma catecholamines and endothelin-1 (ET-1, a potent vasoconstrictor) levels in hypertensive patients; and 2) the impact of 1-month therapy with losartan as compared with moxonidine on catecholamine and ET-1 changes during exercise. Twenty-eight patients with essential hypertension were randomized in two groups: group A received losartan and group B received moxonidine for 1 month. Plasma catecholamines exhibited an almost 10-fold increase during exercise (p<0.

New anxiolytics have been discovered by prediction of biological activity with computer programs pass and derek for a heterogeneous set of 5494 highly chemically diverse heterocyclic compounds (thiazoles, pyrazoles, isatins, a-fused imidazoles and others). The majority of tested compounds exhibit the predicted anxiolytic effect. The most potent activity was found in 2-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-(4-phenylpiperazinomethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine 8, 1-[(4-bromophenyl)-2-oxoethyl]-3-(1,3-dioxolano)-2-indolinone 3, 5-hydroxy-3-methoxycarbonyl-1-phenylpyrazole 5 and 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-(4-methylpiperazinomethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine 7.

The aim of the present paper, is the estimation of the distance between an electrode used as a recording site of the extracellular potential field and a surviving myocardial bundle. The importance of the reliable solution of this problem lies among others in controlling ablation. For our purposes one-dimensional propagation is considered and current sources are activated along a cable simulating the propagating waves with constant velocity.
