In inferior vena cava obstruction, collateral pathways allow the retrograde flow of venous blood from the lower part of the body. Unanticipated findings of Tc-99m macroaggregated albumin (MAA) venography in 3 cases with deep vein thrombosis of the legs and infrarenal inferior vena cava obstruction are presented. Apart from extensive collateral networks in the legs and the abdomen, the visualization of the liver indicates a shunt of the systemic venous blood flow through the paraumbilical vein to the portal vein.

Lipoxygenase plays an essential role in the biosynthesis of the leukotrienes. Leukotrienes, as LO metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA), have been implicated as mediators in the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases, host defense reactions and to play important role in the propagation of the diseases states, exacerbating the local events and ultimately leading to tissue damage. Simple stable molecules containing the hydroxamic acid functionality have been shown to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase.

It is well known that IAP elevation, even at the level of 10mmHg used for laparoscopic surgery leads to an increase in portal pressure and decrease in portal blood flow. Since hepatic hemodynamics are already disturbed in cirrhotics, we decided to investigate the possible role of chronically elevated intra-abdominal pressure thus simulating ascites under tension-in liver perfusion and function in cirrhotic portal hypertensive rats. Four groups of 10 rats each were studied, including two control and two CCl(4)(-) induced cirrhotic groups.

Amine or amide derivatives bearing the 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol moiety are synthesised. Almost all are antioxidants, reduce acute inflammation and inhibit COX-1 and lipoxygenase activity. The most potent anti-inflammatory, COX-1 inhibitor and antioxidant agent, with low toxicity, is 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-thiomorpholin-4-ylmethyl-phenol.

Three feedback methods in acquisition and retention of badminton skills.

Percept Mot Skills

February 2006

Department of Physical Education and Sport Science, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki.

Comparison of three different feedback methods using information about the correct execution of the technique, errors of execution, and a combination of these on the acquisition and retention of two badminton skills of different difficulty were examined. Participants were 48 young male athletes, 10 to 14 years of age, with 2 to 4 years of training. They were divided into three equal groups and instructed on the long forehand serve, a more difficult serve than the short backhand.

The aim of this biomechanical study was to investigate the role of the dorsal vertebral cortex in transpedicular screw fixation. Moss transpedicular screws were introduced into both pedicles of each vertebra in 25 human cadaver vertebrae. The dorsal vertebral cortex and subcortical bone corresponding to the entrance site of the screw were removed on one side and preserved on the other.

We describe the case of a 40-year-old man who presented with an ascending aortic aneurysm and aortic valve regurgitation. The patient underwent a Bentall surgical procedure. Pathologic findings were consistent with giant cell aortitis with synchronous cartilaginous and osseous metaplasia with bone marrow formation in the degenerated aortic valve.

Control of Benzimidazole- and DMI-Resistant Strains of Cercospora beticola with Strobilurin Fungicides.

Plant Dis

April 2006

Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Agriculture, Plant Pathology Laboratory, POB 269, 54006, Thessaloniki, Greece.

The control efficacy of two new strobilurin fungicides, trifloxystrobin and pyraclostrobin, against Cercospora beticola isolates resistant and sensitive to sterol demethylation-inhibiting (DMI) fungicides and benzimidazole fungicides and the effects on evolution of resistance were tested in the current study. Control efficacy of strobilurin fungicides was measured using three C. beticola isolates, one DMI-resistant (DMIR), one benzimidazole-resistant (BENR), and one of wild-type sensitivity (WCB).

Unlabelled: We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with spinal tuberculosis of the thoracic and lumbar spine who had radical débridement, anterior decompression, interbody arthrodesis with an anterior interbody titanium cage, and autologous bone grafts, combined with a standardized perioperative antituberculous regimen. Their mean age was 55.1 years and they were observed for a mean of 65.

First Report of Phomopsis Fruit Decay on Apple Caused by Phomopsis mali in Greece.

Plant Dis

March 2006

Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Agriculture, Plant Pathology Laboratory, POB 269, 54006, Thessaloniki, Greece.

From 2002 to 2005, a previously unreported disease causing significant yield losses was observed on apple fruits (cv. Red Chief) in the region of Imathia in northern Greece. Almost all apple orchards in that area, cultivated with Red Chief, showed disease symptoms on 3 to 10% of the fruits.

Muscle-contraction properties in overarm throwing movements.

J Strength Cond Res

February 2006

Laboratory of Biomechanics, Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

On the basis of dynamic and kinematic data, this study identifies the type of muscle contraction in unloaded overarm throwing movements. An unloaded throw or nearly unloaded throw is defined as the throw in which the external resistance is too small (e.g.

We have designed and synthesized a series of novel molecules having a residue of a classical NSAID and an antioxidant moiety, both attached through amide bonds to a known nootropic structure, an L-proline, trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline or DL-pipecolinic acid residue. The compounds were found to retain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, to acquire hypocholesterolemic action, and to possess a greatly reduced gastrointestinal toxicity. The novel molecules could find useful applications, among others, in slowing the progression or delaying the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.

Real or media-mediated outbreak of coxsackie infections in 2002 in Greece?

Euro Surveill

September 2005

Laboratory of Microbiology, Clinical Virology Department, Medical School, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

The purpose of this study was to provide evidence about the existence of a coxsackie B outbreak in Greece in 2002 by comparing data of laboratory confirmed coxsackie B recent infections in northern Greece between 1998-2001 with data from 2002. The infections were confirmed serologically, using the indirect immunofluorescence method detecting IgM antibodies for coxsackie B1-B6 viruses. Sera from 2701 patients residents of northern Greece who were suspected to be suffering from coxsackie B virus infections were examined: 2056 between 1998 and 2001, and 645 in 2002.

The effect on hepatic drug metabolising enzymes was evaluated for three representative structures and that were selected from a series of substituted oxazine derivatives designed to possess particular pharmacological properties such as analgesic, antioxidant and hypolipidemic activity. In addition, since xenobiotic metabolism, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, atherosclerosis and inflammation are interrelated and mutually affected, the effects of and on acute inflammation in vivo and lipoxygenase activity in vitro were also investigated. It was found that treatment of rats with caused induction of cytochrome P450, enhancement of the metabolism of aminopyrine in vitro and of zoxazolamine and hexobarbital in vivo.

Administration of immunosuppressive treatment in hepatitis B virus carriers with malignancies is associated with the risk of hepatitis B reactivation. This complication is more frequent in patients with hematologic malignancies because administration of corticosteroids, the mainstay of treatment of these patients, is an independent risk factor for hepatitis B reactivation. When lamivudine is given prior to chemotherapy, it prevents the viral replication during the immunosuppression period; therefore, it might reduce the risk of hepatitis B exacerbation.
