Superficial fungal infections, including oral thrush, often affect aged full denture wearers and many individuals over 65 years old. The aim of this study was to examine the ultrastructural morphology of a very rare yeast, named Hanseniaspora uvarum/guillermondi, member of the Ascomycetes family, whose pathogenesis and behaviour is not widely known. The yeast was isolated from whitish lesions of the buccal mucosa of an 70 years old woman.

The production of ethanol from carob pod extract by free and immobilized Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells in batch and fed-batch culture was investigated. Fed-batch culture proved to be a better fermentation system for the production of ethanol than batch culture. In fed-batch culture, both free and immobilized S.

Purpose: The administration of two GnRH analogues (buserelin and leuprolide acetate) in long and short protocols was evaluated prospectively. In the long protocol, the analogues were given from day 1 of the cycle for at least 14 days and then hMG administration was started, while in the short protocol the analogues were initiated from cycle day 1, adding hMG from day 3. The patients were divided into four groups according to the protocol used: Group I, buserelin-long; Group II, buserelin-short; Group III, leuprolide-long; and Group IV, leuprolide-short.

Unlike most of the hydrolytic enzymes that participate in endosperm mobilization, beta-glucosidase of barley (Hordeum vulgare) seeds does not increase during germination, even in the presence of exogenously added gibberellic acid. However, the germination process affects the physical properties of beta-glucosidase in terms of charge and apparent molecular weight. Analysis of developing barley grains shows that the enzyme is synthesized two weeks before maturation and is stored in the endosperm of the dry dormant seed.

The effects of three representative organophosphates (OPs), tricresyl phosphate (TCP), triphenyl phosphite (TPP) and paraoxon (POX) on the proliferation and viability of rat PC12 pheochromocytoma cells were studied. With respect to its IC50, TCP was at least an order of magnitude more potent in its antiproliferative activity than both TPP and POX. All test OPs were cytotoxic at concentrations inhibiting cell proliferation.

When the beta 1-, beta 2- and beta 3-tubulin-specific DNAs from Drosophila melanogaster were used as probes to recognize tubulin-specific sequences in the chromosomes of Drosophila auraria, they were found to hybridize to the same polytene band in region 32C of the 2L polytene chromosome. Three overlapping clones were isolated from a lambda EMBL3 genomic library of D. auraria, and they all contain beta-tubulin-specific sequences based on hybridization and partial-sequencing experiments of subcloned fragments.

Mononuclear inflammatory cells were retrospectively analysed using monoclonal antibodies in the interstitium and glomeruli of 16 renal biopsy specimens from patients with nephrotic syndrome due to idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). The aim of the study was to determine the composition of the infiltrate and to assess the ability to predict the response of proteinuria to corticosteroids. All patients had received prednisolone as a sole treatment.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin system in patients with unilateral or bilateral renovascular hypertension. Plasma noradrenaline (plNA) levels and plasma renin activity (PRA) were measured simultaneously in blood samples obtained both from a peripheral vein and from the renal veins, during catheterization of the venous cava system, in 17 patients with unilateral (group A) and in 9 patients with bilateral renal artery stenoses (group B).
Results: peripheral plNA levels were elevated in 6/17 patients of the group A and 3/9 patients of the group B, while in the remaining 11/17 and 6/9 were normal, respectively.

The dexamethasone suppression test (DST) was administered to 30 inpatients who met the DSM-III-R criteria for chronic schizophrenia and shared similar environments. Four of them (13%) were DST nonsuppressors. The mean and maximum postdexamethasone cortisol levels were correlated with the patient's score on the scale for the Schedule for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms and with the score on the anergia subscale of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the kinetics of human sperm acrosome reaction in vitro using the triple stain technique. Acrosome reaction was studied in sperm samples from 16 fertile men 2, 6, and 9 h after ejaculation, following incubation in culture medium (CM; Ham's F-10), with a mixture of CM and follicular fluid (FF), or with FF only. Incubation of sperm samples without the influence of any medium served as control.
