The quest for novel agents to regulate the generation of prostaglandin E (PGE) is of high importance because this eicosanoid is a key player in inflammatory diseases. We synthesized a series of -acylated and -alkylated 2-aminobenzothiazoles and related heterocycles (benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles) and evaluated their ability to suppress the cytokine-stimulated generation of PGE in rat mesangial cells. 2-Aminobenzothiazoles, either acylated by the 3-(naphthalen-2-yl)propanoyl moiety (GK510) or -alkylated by a chain carrying a naphthalene (GK543) or a phenyl moiety (GK562) at a distance of three carbon atoms, stand out in inhibiting PGE generation, with EC values ranging from 118 nM to 177 nM.

Insights into the Role of Telomeres in Human Embryological Parameters. Opinions Regarding IVF.

J Dev Biol

November 2021

Laboratory of Medical Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, 45110 Ioannina, Greece.

Telomeres promote genome integrity by protecting chromosome ends from the activation of the DNA damage response and protecting chromosomes from the loss of coding sequences due to the end replication problem. Telomere length (TL) is progressively shortened as age progresses, thus resulting in cellular senescence. Therefore, TL is in strong adverse linear correlation with aging.

The prognostic utility of ICH-score in anticoagulant related intracerebral hemorrhage.

J Neurol Sci

February 2020

Department of Neurology, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN, USA; Second Department of Neurology, "Attikon" University Hospital, School of Medicine, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Although intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) score is used to provide an estimate on the probability of mortality following spontaneous ICH of any cause, its utility has not been exclusively tested in ICH patients with history of treatment with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) or non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs). The aim of the present report is to investigate the utility of ICH score for mortality prognostication of VKA-ICH and NOAC-ICH patients. We used receiver operating characteristic curve analyses to estimate the accuracy parameters for the different values of ICH score in the prognosis of mortality within 30-days after the onset of NOAC-ICH or VKA-ICH.
