Nanoscale

February 2024

Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Műegyetem rkp. 3., H-1111 Budapest, Hungary.

Quantitation of protein-nanoparticle interactions is essential for the investigation of the protein corona around NPs and when using synthetic polymer nanoparticles as affinity reagents for selective protein recognition . Here, a method based on steady-state fluorescence anisotropy measurement is presented as a novel, separation-free tool for the assessment of protein-nanoparticle interactions. For this purpose, a long-lifetime luminescent Ru-complex is used for protein labelling, which exhibits low anisotropy when conjugated to the protein but displays high anisotropy when the proteins are bound to the much larger polymer nanoparticles.

November 2023

Institute of Parasitology, Department of Infectious Diseases and Pathobiology, Vetsuisse-Faculty, University of Bern, Länggassstrasse 122, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • - In Egypt, pork production is mostly done on a small scale in backyards without proper sanitary measures, which can lead to exposure to harmful pathogens in pigs.
  • - A study conducted at Cairo's only licensed pig abattoir tested 332 serum samples and found a significant presence of food-borne zoonotic parasites, with specific seroreactivities noted for various parasites.
  • - The research revealed varying levels of seroprevalence based on location in Cairo and found that female pigs had a higher rate of certain antibodies compared to males, marking the first seroprevalence report for these parasites in Egyptian pigs.

The most significant aspect of promoting greenhouse productivity is the timely monitoring of disease spores and applying proactive control measures. This paper introduces a method to classify spores of airborne disease in greenhouse crops by using fingerprint characteristics of diffraction-polarized images and machine learning. Initially, a diffraction-polarization imaging system was established, and the diffraction fingerprint images of disease spores were taken in polarization directions of 0°, 45°, 90° and 135°.

Metal pollution is a major environmental concern worldwide, especially in Egypt. The aquaculture industry uses widespread artificial feeds to stimulate fish production, leading to metal accumulation in the aquatic environment. Heavy metal concentrations (HMCs) in sediments, water, and tissues were studied to study the effect of pollution levels on heamatological, and biochemical, immunological aspects of farmed fish as well as on human health.

In this article, we suggest an enhanced estimator for the estimation of finite population variance using twofold auxiliary variable under stratified random sampling. The numerical expressions for the bias and MSE are determined up to the first order of approximation. In order to effectively validate the theoretical findings, three actual data sets are included.

The nuclear factor Y subunit B (CaNFYB) gene family plays a significant role in diverse biological processes, including plant responses to abiotic stressors such as salinity. In this study, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the CaNFYB gene family in pepper, encompassing their identification, structural details, evolutionary relationships, regulatory elements in promoter regions, and expression profiles under salinity stress. A total of 19 CaNFYB genes were identified and subsequently characterized based on their secondary protein structures, revealing conserved domains essential for their functionality.

The El-Rawda solar saltern, located in North Sinai, Egypt, is formed through the process of water evaporation from the Bradawil lagoon. This evaporation leads to the precipitation of gypsum, halite minerals, and salt flats, which subsequently cover the southern and eastern areas of the lagoon. This study employed the shotgun metagenomic approach, the illumine platform, and bioinformatic tools to investigate the taxonomic composition and functional diversity of halophilic microbial communities in solar saltern.

When measuring the research variable is complicated, expensive, or problematic, median ranked set sampling (MRSS) is often utilized since it is straightforward to rank the components using a low-cost sorting criterion. Using this sampling scheme, many authors considered the problem of population mean estimation with a single auxiliary variable in order to obtain more precised estimators than the traditional ratio type regression estimators. In this article, we extend their ideas based on regression approach using two auxiliary variables and introduce a new regression-type estimator along with its theoretical expression of minimum mean square error (MSE).

Durum and bread wheat are well adapted to the Mediterranean Basin. Twenty-three genotypes of each species were grown to evaluate the intra- and inter-genetic diversity based on omega (), gamma () and alpha ()-gliadin profiles. To achieve this purpose, the endosperm storage proteins (both gliadins and glutenins) were extracted from wheat grains and electrophoresed on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gels.

Comparative Assessment of SSR and RAPD markers for genetic diversity in some Mango cultivars.

PeerJ

November 2023

Faculty of Environmental Agricultural Sciences, Plant Production Department - Genetic Branch, Arish University, El Arish, Egypt.

Genetic improvement mainly depends on the level of genetic variability present in the population, and the degree of genetic diversity in a population largely determines the rate of genetic advancement. For analyzing genetic diversity and determining cultivar identities, a molecular marker is a useful tool. Using 30 SSR (simple sequence repeat) and 30 RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) markers, this study evaluated the genetic divergence of 17 mango cultivars.

Bacteriophages (Phages in short) were introduced as the natural enemy of bacteria that may act as alternatives to antibiotics to overcome the challenge of antibiotic resistance. However, in the recent history of science, phages have been employed in different molecular tools and used in numerous therapeutic and diagnostic approaches. Furthermore, thanks to the phage`s highly specific host range limited to prokaryotes, phage particles can be used as safe delivery vehicles and display systems.
