Management of natural resources and environmental systems has often involved top-down approaches in which government agencies set and enforce regulations on extractive activities. More recently, market-driven approaches were introduced to incentivise producers to voluntarily engage in practices that align with management objectives and support regulations. For the first time, we compare government and voluntary approaches within fisheries management systems and quantify their relative influences on the sustainability status of fish populations.

Bioaccumulation and toxicokinetics of arsenite (As III) in the aquatic bioindicator Pomacea canaliculata using radiotracer analysis.

This study examines the kinetics of absorption, distribution and accumulation of arsenite (As III) in the freshwater gastropod Pomacea canaliculata using a short-lived tracer (As III). The toxicokinetic model indicate that the gills play a crucial role in the As III uptake, with uptake rates significantly exceeding those of release back into the aquatic environment. The movement of As III from the gills to the hemolymph has low exchange rate.

Breast cancer (BC) patient-derived xenografts (PDX) are relevant models for precision medicine. However, there are no collections derived from South American BC patients. Since ethnicity significantly impacts clinical outcomes, it is necessary to develop PDX models from different lineages.

Cortical areas associated to higher cognition drove primate brain evolution.

Although intense research effort is seeking to address which brain areas fire and connect to each other to produce complex behaviors in a few living primates, little is known about their evolution, and which brain areas or facets of cognition were favored by natural selection. By developing statistical tools to study the evolution of the brain cortex at the fine scale, we found that rapid cortical expansion in the prefrontal region took place early on during the evolution of primates. In anthropoids, fast-expanding cortical areas extended to the posterior parietal cortex.

Thus, understanding obesogenic behaviour patterns within populations is critical to promoting adolescents' health. This study investigates clustering patterns of adolescents' obesogenic behaviours across South American countries.

Efficacy of dolutegravir plus lamivudine in treatment-naive people living with HIV without baseline drug-resistance testing available (D2ARLING): 48-week results of a phase 4, randomised, open-label, non-inferiority trial.

Background: Dolutegravir plus lamivudine has emerged as a preferred treatment for HIV; however, initiating this regimen without baseline resistance testing raises concerns about the potential presence of pretreatment lamivudine resistance. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dolutegravir plus lamivudine in the absence of information on baseline resistance testing in treatment-naive people with HIV.

Methods: We did an open-label, non-inferiority, single-centre, phase 4, randomised controlled study (D2ARLING), designed to assess the efficacy and safety of dolutegravir plus lamivudine in treatment-naive people with HIV with no available baseline resistance testing.

Regenerative surgical therapy in a frequent cannabis consumer: A case study.

Background: There is substantial evidence that smokers present a less favorable response following regenerative periodontal surgery. However, there are no reports to date on the response to regenerative procedures in chronic cannabis smokers. In the present case study, we discuss the periodontal outcomes of reparative and regenerative surgical treatment in a cannabis consumer patient with generalized stage III grade C periodontitis.

Despite significant progress in understanding the factors influencing cognitive function in Parkinson's disease (PD), there is a notable gap in data representation for the Latinx population. This study aims to evaluate the contributors to and disparities in cognitive performance among Latinx patients with PD. A retrospective analysis was conducted based on cross-sectional data encompassing demographic, environmental, motor, and non-motor disease characteristics from the Latin American Research Consortium on the Genetics of PD (LARGE-PD) and the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohorts.

Cystitis glandularis due to Escherichia coli infection in a diabetic Miniature Schnauzer: a case report.

Background: Lower urinary tract disease is a common clinical condition in dogs, usually presenting with dysuria, pollakiuria and haematuria. Diabetes mellitus is a predisposing factor for urinary tract infection in both humans and dogs and does not necessarily present with clinical signs. In this case report, we describe for the first time a case of cystitis glandularis in a dog with diabetes mellitus, associated with Escherichia coli urinary tract infection.

Introduction: With the increased use of computed tomography scans in cases with trimalleolar ankle fractures, bone fragments between the posterior malleolus and the rest of the articular surface tibial plafond surface - described as intercalary fragments (ICFs) - can be recognized. The interest in chemical interactions between inorganic sulfur species and heme compounds has grown significantly in recent years due to their physiological relevance. The model system ferric N-acetyl microperoxidase 11 (NAcMP11Fe) enables the exploration of the mechanistic aspects of the interaction between the ferric heme group and binding sulfur ligands, without the constraints imposed by a protein matrix and the stabilizing effects of distal amino acids. Objective: To determine if the SARC-F tool, used to screen for sarcopenia risk, can also predict mild cognitive impairment (MCI) diagnosed with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) tool.

Methods: This is a sub-analysis of data from a cross-sectional study carried out in postmenopausal women from Latin America (nine countries) in which sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric data were collected, and the SARC-F and MoCA tools administered. From the original sample of 1185 women, analysis was performed only among the 772 with natural menopause.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to present a newly designed 3D-printed personalized model (3D PPM) of a radiofrequency needle guide with a maxillary fixation for gasserian ganglion (GG) puncture.

Methods: Implementation of 3D CT-guided radiofrequency therapy of the GG with and without use of 3D PPM was analyzed. The following parameters were assessed: radiation time, dose area product, air kerma reference point, pain severity during the puncture needle insertion, prosopalgia regression degree (according to visual analog scale) and the severity of facial numbness (according to the Barrow Neurological Institute scale) in the early postoperative period, and postpuncture complications.

The Coexistence of Carotico-Clinoid Foramen and Interclinoidal Osseous Bridge: An Anatomo-Radiological Study With Surgical Implications.

Background And Objectives: The coexistence of complete carotico-clinoid bridge (CCB), an ossification between the anterior (ACP) and the middle clinoid (MCP), and an interclinoidal osseous bridge (ICB), between the ACP and the posterior clinoid (PCP), represents an uncommonly reported anatomic variant. If not adequately recognized, osseous bridges may complicate open or endoscopic surgery, along with the pneumatization of the ACP, especially when performing anterior or middle clinoidectomies.

Methods: According to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews guidelines, a systematic scoping review was conducted up to June 5, 2023.
