Background: Female offspring was associated with a high risk of postpartum depression (PPD) during the one-child policy period in China. However, little is known about the association between maternal expectations on fetal gender and the risk of PPD in the context of the new two children policy implemented in 2016.
Methods: We conducted a hospital-based cohort study of women with singleton pregnancies between 2017 and 2018 (n = 991) to address this concern.
Cytotoxic immune cells, including T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells, are essential components of the host response against tumors. CTLs and NK cells secrete granzyme A (GzmA) upon recognition of cancer cells; however, there are very few tools that can detect physiological levels of active GzmA with high spatiotemporal resolution. Herein, we report the rational design of the near-infrared fluorogenic substrates for human GzmA and mouse GzmA.

Chronic inflammation in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) leads to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, small bowel cancer, intestinal lymphoma and cholangiocarcinoma. However, treatments for IBD have also been associated with an increased risk of neoplasms. Patients receiving Thiopurines (TPs) have an increased risk of hematologic malignancies, non-melanoma skin cancer, urinary tract neoplasms and cervical cancer.

Background And Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a decrease in the colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence, due to the disruption of screening programmes and a downscaling of endoscopic activity. The endpoint of this study is to evaluate if the pandemic has led to a change in CRC diagnostic rate and presentation in our population.
Methods: Multicenter retrospective study of all public hospitals of the Aragon region, attending a population of 1,329,391 inhabitants.

Cancer resistance to treatments is a challenge that researchers constantly seek to overcome. For instance, TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a potential good prospect as an anti-cancer therapy, as it attacks tumor cells but not normal cells. However, treatments based in soluble TRAIL provided incomplete clinical results and diverse formulations have been developed to improve its bioactivity.

There are now a growing number of licensed biological therapies for patients with Crohn's disease. However, there can be significant costs associated with long-term maintenance treatment, as well as some concerns about potential side-effects. As a result, there has been increasing interest in elective biological treatment discontinuation in selected patients, after a sustained period of remission.

New additive manufacturing techniques, such as melting electro-writing (MEW) or near-field electrospinning (NFES), are now used to include microfibers inside 3D printed scaffolds as FDM printers present a limited resolution in the XY axis, not making it easy to go under 100 µm without dealing with nozzle troubles. This work studies the possibility of creating reproducible microscopic internal fibers inside scaffolds printed by standard 3D printing. For this purpose, novel algorithms generating deposition routines (G-code) based on primitive geometrical figures were created by python scripts, modifying basic deposition conditions such as temperature, speed, or material flow.

Purpose: After a full-thickness total wall excision of a rectal tumor, suturing the defect is generally recommended. Recently, due to various contradictory studies, there is a trend to leave the defects open. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether leaving the defect open is an adequate management strategy compared with suturing it closed based on postoperative outcomes and recurrences.

Osteoarthritis is a prevalent degenerative condition that is closely related to the destruction and inflammation of cartilage. The high prevalence of this pathology exhorts researchers to search for novel therapeutic approaches. Vegetable-fruit wastes have emerged as a promising origin of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that, in some cases, may also exert chondroprotective effects.

Distal femoral fractures are fractures associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, affecting to three different groups of individuals: younger people suffering high-energy trauma, elderly people with fragile bones and people with periprosthetic fractures around previous total knee arthroplasty. They have been classically treated with conventional plates and intramedullary nails and more recently with locked plates that have increased their indications to more types of fractures. The main objective of the present work is the biomechanical study, by means of finite element simulation, of the stability achieved in the osteosynthesis of femoral fractures in zones 4 and 5 of Wiss, by using locked plates with different plate lengths and different screw configurations, and analysing the effect of screw proximity to the fracture site.

The antimicrobial action of gold depends on different factors including its oxidation state in the intra- and extracellular medium, the redox potential, its ability to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), the medium components, the properties of the targeted bacteria wall, its penetration in the bacterial cytosol, the cell membrane potential, and its interaction with intracellular components. We demonstrate that different gold species are able to induce bacterial wall damage as a result of their electrostatic interaction with the cell membrane, the promotion of ROS generation, and the consequent DNA damage. In-depth genomic and proteomic studies on Escherichia coli confirmed the superior toxicity of Au (III) vs Au (I) based on the different molecular mechanisms analyzed including oxidative stress, bacterial energetic metabolism, biosynthetic processes, and cell transport.

Granzyme A (gzmA), a serine protease involved in the modulation of the inflammatory immune response, is found at an elevated level in the serum from ALS patients. However, the influence of gzmA on the progression of ALS remains unclear. The aim of our work was to assess whether the absence of gzmA in an ALS murine model could help slow down the progression of the disease.
