Transradial versus transfemoral artery access in mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

Clin Neurol Neurosurg

November 2024

Nursing & Midwifery Research Department (NMRD), Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar; Department of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, QU Health, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Transradial access (TRA) for mechanical thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke is being considered as a safer alternative to the traditional transfemoral access (TFA), though its effectiveness is still being questioned.
  • A meta-analysis examined 13 studies involving 4,759 patients and found no major difference in successful recanalization rates between TRA and TFA.
  • However, when a specific study was excluded, the results suggested TFA might be more effective with better functional outcomes and a lower risk of needing to switch from TFA to TRA during procedures.

Introduction And Importance: Situs Inversus Totalis (SIT) is a rare condition characterized by the transposition of internal organs. Given the anatomical variations in SIT, surgeons must exercise extreme caution when performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy to avoid iatrogenic bile duct injury. Despite the high difficulty index associated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy in SIT, there is only one case report of common bile duct (CBD) injury in the English-language literature.

Background In Jordan, managing metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is particularly complex, considering limited resources, access to advanced therapies, and unique patient demographics. Palliative chemotherapy, an approach aimed at relieving symptoms and improving the quality of life in patients with advanced cancer, including mCRC, has gained attention as a treatment strategy. While palliative chemotherapy may not aim for complete cancer eradication, it can extend survival, manage disease-related symptoms, and enhance the patient's overall well-being.

Acute postoperative transient sialadenitis, also known as anesthesia mumps, is a rare condition that is transient, usually benign, and self-limiting in nature involving unilateral or bilateral parotid glands. The exact mechanism and etiology have not been fully explained, but the causative factors may include, pneumoparotitis, venous congestion, excess saliva secretion, surgical position, perioperative dehydration, and perioperative use of drugs such as atropine, succinylcholine, morphine, ephedrine, and propofol. We report a case of a 31-year-old pregnant lady who was admitted for elective cesarean section under spinal anesthesia.

Purpose: Hip fracture surgery is associated with a risk of morbidity and mortality, with admission hemoglobin levels being a significant predictor of mortality risk. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) levels and mortality in patients who underwent hip fracture surgeries, with the goal of enhancing prognosis prediction and reducing complications within this patient subset. In addition, to assess the characteristics of patients at a higher risk of postoperative mortality.

Background: E-cigarette use is rapidly growing, and little is known about the postoperative complications. Cigarette smoking has been well-established to be associated with delayed wound healing and increased complications in surgical patients. Due to the intricate and harmonious nature of the wound-healing process, vaping may impair tissue regeneration, posing a risk for patients undergoing surgery.

The Role Of Progestogens In Threatened And Idiopathic Recurrent Miscarriage.

Int J Womens Health

November 2019

Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The burden of multiple sclerosis (MS) in women of childbearing potential is increasing, with peak incidence around the age of 30 years, increasing incidence and prevalence, and growing female : male ratio. Guidelines recommend early use of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), which are contraindicated or recommended with considerable caution, during pregnancy/breastfeeding. Many physicians are reluctant to prescribe them for a woman who is/is planning to be pregnant.

Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) delay or may prevent the progression of patients with high-risk clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) to clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS), and from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary progressive MS. Current evidence on the effects of DMT on disability in MS is supported by the use of the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), which is dominated by ambulation, and usually used as a secondary outcome measure. Less is known about the long-term effects of DMTs on other aspects of functional status, particularly cognition, which is a key determinant of ability to work.

Background: Lifestyle habits of physicians are of paramount importance both because they influence the physician's own health and because these habits have been shown to affect patients' care. There is limited information on physician health and lifestyle habits in Bahrain.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study design, an anonymous self-administered questionnaire that assesses wellbeing and lifestyle habits was distributed to a random sample of 175 out of 320 primary health care physicians in Bahrain.

For decades, the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) has been the principal measure of disability in clinical trials in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and in clinical practice. However, this test is dominated by effects on ambulation. Composite endpoints may provide a more sensitive measure of MS-related disability through the measurement of additional neurological functions.
