The taxonomy of species of Bivesicula Yamaguti, 1934 is analysed for samples from holocentrid, muraenid and serranid fishes from Japan, Ningaloo Reef (Western Australia), the Great Barrier Reef (Queensland), New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Analysis of three genetic markers (cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 and 28S rDNA) identifies three strongly supported clades of species and suggests that Bivesicula as presently recognized is not monophyletic. On the basis of combined morphological, molecular and biological data, 10 species are distinguished of which five are proposed as new.

Background: Mucosal surfaces of fish provide cardinal defense against environmental pathogens and toxins, yet these external mucosae are also responsible for maintaining and regulating beneficial microbiota. To better our understanding of interactions between host, diet, and microbiota in finfish and how those interactions may vary across mucosal tissue, we used an integrative approach to characterize and compare immune biomarkers and microbiota across three mucosal tissues (skin, gill, and gut) in Atlantic salmon receiving a control diet or diets supplemented with mannan-oligosaccharides, coconut oil, or both. Dietary impacts on mucosal immunity were further evaluated by experimental ectoparasitic sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) challenge.

Assisted migration (AM), which is defined as the managed movement of climate-adapted individuals within or outside the species ranges, is a conservation option to improve species' adaptive capacity and facilitate persistence. Growth hormone (Gh) regulates somatic growth in fishes, particularly through the Gh - insulin-like growth factor-I (Igf-I) axis. In this study, recombinant Japanese eel Ghs with or without C-terminal peptides of human chorionic gonadotropin (CTP), which are known to prolong the half-life, were produced using the HEK 293 and CHO expression system. The effect of recombinant Gh administration to eel larvae on their somatic growth was investigated in short-term feeding experiments, and it was found that three types of recombinant Ghs with CTP (CTP-reGh, reGh-CTP and reGh-CTP × 2) were more effective in promoting somatic growth in eel larvae than recombinant Ghs without CTP.

Various secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein (SCPP) genes are expressed in the skin and jaw during the formation of bone, teeth, and scales in osteichthyans (bony vertebrates). Among these mineralized skeletal units is the ganoid scale, found in many fossil actinopterygians (ray-finned fish) but confirmed only in Polypteriformes (bichirs, reedfish) and Lepisosteiformes (gars) among extant clades. Here, characteristics of marine litter ingested by Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF, Thunnus orientalis) juveniles under captive conditions were investigated. Swimming speeds of PBF juveniles with pseud-ingested polystyrene chips were compared, and mortality due to polystyrene chip ingestion in cultured teleosts (red sea bream, greater amberjack, and white trevally) was examined in the laboratory. The Gulf of the Maine (GoM) is one of the fastest warming bodies of water in the world, posing serious physiological challenges to its marine inhabitants. Marine organisms can cope with the cellular and molecular stresses created by climate change through changes in gene expression. Antioxidant activity of Klunzinger's mullet () muscle hydrolysates obtained using fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis was determined.
