Objectives: Should a young person receive psychotherapy or medication for their depression and on what evidence do we base this decision? In this paper, we test the factors across modalities that may influence comparability between medication and psychotherapy trials.

Methods: We included 92 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of psychotherapy and medication for child and adolescent depression (mean age 4-18 years). Using meta-analyses, we compared (a) participant characteristics and (b) trial characteristics in medication and psychotherapy trials.

Rectal cancer is universally considered a different disease entity as compared to colon cancer, except when dealing with colorectal peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), in which the two cancers are deemed as the same one. The present study aims to investigate the influence of primary tumor location (colon vs. rectum) on oncologic outcomes in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for colorectal peritoneal metastases.

Background: Continuous anticoagulation based on the CHA2DS2-VASc score is recommended to prevent embolism caused by atrial fibrillation (AF), but it does not consider AF episodes. The Apple Watch's continuous heart rhythm monitoring and fast-acting direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) could enable precise, episode-tailored anticoagulation, reducing bleeding risks while preventing stroke. This study evaluates Apple Watch-guided personalized anticoagulation therapy, adjusting DOAC usage based on real-time AF detection.

Ecofriendly and biocompatible biochars derived from waste-branches for direct and efficient solid-phase extraction of benzodiazepines in crude urine sample prior to LC-MS/MS.

Mikrochim Acta

January 2025

School of Public Health, Hebei Key Laboratory of Occupational Health and Safety for Coal Industry, North China University of Science and Technology, No. 21 Bohai Road, Caofeidian, Tangshan, 063210, Hebei, China.

Biochars (BCs) derived from waste-branches of apple tree, grape tree, and oak were developed for direct solid-phase extraction (SPE) of five benzodiazepines (BZDs) in crude urine samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, X-ray diffractometry, N adsorption/desorption experiments, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry characterizations revealed the existence of their mesoporous structure and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups. The obtained BCs not only possessed high affinity towards BZDs via π-π and hydrogen bond interactions, but also afforded the great biocompatibility of excluding interfering components from undiluted urine samples when using SPE adsorbents.

Cu-Doped MnO Catalysts for Effective Fruit Preservation via Ozone Synergistic Catalytic Oxidation.

Foods

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, China.

Developing and implementing technologies that can significantly reduce food loss during storage and transport are of paramount importance. Ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation (OSCO) technology has been developed, which sterilizes bacteria and viruses on the surface of food and degrades ethylene released during fruit storage through the active oxygen produced by the catalytic decomposition of ozone. Herein, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of MnO with distinct phase compositions and nanostructures through simply varying the reaction temperatures.

Background: Patients with distal radius fractures (DRFs) encounter significant difficulties and challenges in their daily lives due to their medical condition and a lack of strategies for modifying activities. Occupation-based interventions have emerged as promising strategies to improve occupational performance and participation outcomes, addressing these challenges.

Purpose: This study aims to develop the aid for decision-making in occupation choice for distal radius fracture (ADOC-DRF), a novel decision-aid tool designed to facilitate patient-centered and occupation-based goal-setting by offering illustrations tailored to the postsurgical recovery period and prescribed activity loads.

Smartphone-based mobile digital pressure sensor for quantitative point-of-care testing of respiratory syncytial virus infection.

Talanta

January 2025

Department of Transfusion Medicine, School of Laboratory Medicine and Biotechnology, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510515, China; Shenzhen Bao'an District Central Blood Station, Shenzhen, 518101, China. Electronic address:

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute respiratory tract infections in infants and elderly individuals, leading to hospitalisation and potentially fatal outcomes, posing a serious threat to global health and economy. This study proposes a smartphone-based mobile digital pressure sensor (smartphone-MDPS) for the quantitative detection of the RSV fusion protein (RSV-F) in clinical nasopharyngeal samples. The smartphone-MDPS utilized two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to the F protein, of which mAb1 was conjugated with Au@PtNPs (Au@PtNPs-mAb1) as the detection antibody and mAb2 was coupled with magnetic beads (MB-mAb2) as a coating antibody to establish a novel sandwich immunoassay.

Association between genetically predicted leisure and social activities and cardiovascular disease and other health outcomes.

Nat Cardiovasc Res

January 2025

Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences and Technology (SAIHST), Sungkyunkwan University, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea.

Participation in leisure and social activities (LSA) is associated with better health outcomes and lower mortality. Previous observational studies demonstrated a relationship between engagement in LSA and both mental and physical health. Although several studies examined the association between LSA and health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, their possible causal relationship has not been studied.

Background: Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) has become an important strategy for treating atrial fibrillation (AF), and postoperative recurrence represents a significant and actively discussed clinical concern. The recurrence after RFCA is considered closely related to inflammation. Systemic immune inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammation predictor based on neutrophils, platelets, and lymphocytes, and is considered a biomarker that comprehensively reflects the immune inflammatory status of the body.

Four versions of the novel Moletest on-device signal-processing analysis software, delivered on a single-application iPadPro11, were evaluated in pigmented skin lesions of patients sent for biopsy comparing its results with the lesion histology. The primary objective was to demonstrate that the nomela test provided at least 95 ± 2% sensitivity for not-melanoma. Proprietary software recognised the lesion perimeter, rejecting images with uncertain border, and performed analysis using non-scalar metrics of the image within the perimeter.
