Unleashing creativity in people with Parkinson's disease: a pilot study of a co-designed creative arts therapy.

Background: Conventional medical management, while essential, cannot address all multifaceted consequences of Parkinson's disease (PD). This pilot study explores the potential of a co-designed creative arts therapy on health-related quality of life, well-being, and pertinent non-motor symptoms.

Methods: We conducted an exploratory pilot study with a pre-post design using validated questionnaires.

Thermal ablation versus surgical resection of small-size colorectal liver metastases (COLLISION): an international, randomised, controlled, phase 3 non-inferiority trial.

Background: For patients with small-size colorectal liver metastases, growing evidence suggests thermal ablation to be associated with fewer adverse events and faster recovery than resection while also challenging resection in terms of local control and overall survival. This study assessed the potential non-inferiority of thermal ablation compared with surgical resection in patients with small-size resectable colorectal liver metastases.

Methods: Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) from 14 centres in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy with ten or fewer small-size (≤3 cm) colorectal liver metastases, no extrahepatic metastases, and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0-2, were stratified per centre, and according to their disease burden, into low, intermediate, and high disease burden subgroups and randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either thermal ablation (experimental group) or surgical resection (control group) of all target colorectal liver metastases using the web-based module Castor electronic data capture with variable block sizes of 4, 6, and 8.

Intravesical Instillation of Chemotherapy Before Radical Surgery for Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: The REBACARE Trial.

Background And Objective: Intravesical instillation of chemotherapy (IIC) after radical surgery for upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) reduces the risk of intravesical recurrence (IVR). However, compliance is low because of possible extravesical leakage after bladder cuff excision. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative IIC in reducing the risk of IVR.

Introduction And Objectives: Nil by mouth (NBM) is a frequent imposition for patients recovering from critical illness. Its impact on patients' wellbeing and rehabilitation is under researched. We sought ICU multidisciplinary opinion to primarily assess the relevance of taste deprivation on patient care and recovery, and to identify future opportunities for innovation and research.

The course of physical fitness and nutritional status in patients following prehabilitation before esophageal cancer surgery: Results from the PRIOR study.

Introduction: This study evaluates the course of physical fitness and nutritional status during curative therapy for esophageal cancer, after implementation of a prehabilitation program. Additionally, the impact of baseline physical fitness level and severe postoperative complications on the course of individual patients were explored.

Materials And Methods: This multicenter, observational cohort study included patients with esophageal cancer following curative treatment.

Randomized Trial Demonstrating No Translocation of Intact Intestinal Bacteria During Hemodialysis or Hemodiafiltration.

Introduction: The low incidence of intradialytic hypotension (IDH) in high-volume (HV) hemodiafiltration (HDF) may help in maintaining gut perfusion during treatment. Preservation of gut endothelial integrity would limit or prevent bacterial translocation and subsequent systemic inflammation, which may contribute to the low mortality rate in HV-HDF.

Methods: Forty patients were cross-over randomized to standard (hemodialysis [HD]) (S-HD), cool HD (C-HD), and HDF (low-volume [LV] and HV, convection volume (CV) of 15 L and ≥ 23 L per session, respectively), each for 2 weeks.

Objectives: One important aspect in facilitating language access for children with hearing loss (HL) is the auditory environment. An optimal auditory environment is characterized by high signal to noise ratios (SNRs), low background noise levels, and low reverberation times. In this study, the authors describe the auditory environment of early intervention groups specifically equipped for young children with HL.

Long-term mortality of Dutch COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care medicine: a retrospective analysis from a national quality registry.

Objective: To describe the 12-month mortality of Dutch COVID-19 intensive care unit patients, the total COVID-19 population and various subgroups on the basis of the number of comorbidities, age, sex, mechanical ventilation, and vasoactive medication use.

Methods: We included all patients admitted with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020, and March 29, 2022, from the Dutch National Intensive Care (NICE) database. The crude 12-month mortality rate is presented via Kaplan-Meier survival curves for each patient subgroup.

The Dutch version of the Dignity Therapy Question Protocol for individual Dutch nursing home residents without cognitive impairments (during COVID-19): a pilot study.

Background: Dignity therapy is a brief, structured psychotherapeutic intervention originally designed to help last-stage cancer patients maintain their dignity. It consists of a semi-structured interview encouraging patients to talk about their lives. The recorded session are transcribed and edited, after which the patient has the opportunity to make further changes to the final document.

Oral Glucose-Lowering Agents vs Insulin for Gestational Diabetes: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Metformin and glyburide monotherapy are used as alternatives to insulin in managing gestational diabetes. Whether a sequential strategy of these oral agents results in noninferior perinatal outcomes compared with insulin alone is unknown.

Objective: To test whether a treatment strategy of oral glucose-lowering agents is noninferior to insulin for prevention of large-for-gestational-age infants.

Background: Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduces lung-cancer-related mortality in high-risk individuals. AI can potentially reduce radiologist workload as first-read-filter by ruling-out negative cases. The feasibility of AI as first reader was evaluated in the European 4-IN-THE-LUNG-RUN (4ITLR) trial, comparing its negative-misclassifications (NMs) to those of radiologists and the impact on referral rates.

Promoting psychological adaptability and well-being of patients with personality disorders with creative arts and psychomotor therapies: protocol of an intervention mapping study.

Introduction: Personality disorders (PDs) cause much suffering. In treating patients with PDs, it is important not only to focus on reducing symptoms, but also on promoting psychological adaptability and well-being. The experiential nature of Creative Arts and Psychomotor Therapies (CAPTs) contributes to working on psychological adaptability and improving well-being, although more evidence is needed.

Negative memory bias predicts change in psychiatric problems in a naturalistic psychiatric patient sample.

Self-referential negative memory bias contributes to depression and other psychiatric disorders. Co-morbidity between these disorders is highly common in clinical practice, but transdiagnostic predictors like negative memory bias are not well understood yet. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the predictive value of negative memory bias for long-term change in broad psychiatric problems.

Background: Surgical procedures in anticoagulated patients require specific attention due to increased bleeding risk. Preoperative anticoagulation interruption in high-risk patients is often necessary. Bridging anticoagulation with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) minimizes thromboembolic risk, but its effect on international normalized ratio (INR) measurement is not well established, necessitating careful monitoring and individual assessment.

Impact of Camera Settings on 3D Reconstruction Quality: Insights from NeRF and Gaussian Splatting.

This paper explores the influence of various camera settings on the quality of 3D reconstructions, particularly in indoor crime scene investigations. Utilizing Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and Gaussian Splatting for 3D reconstruction, we analyzed the impact of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture settings on the quality of the resulting 3D reconstructions. By conducting controlled experiments in a meeting room setup, we identified optimal settings that minimize noise and artifacts while maximizing detail and brightness.

Background: The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is used worldwide to classify and manage musculoskeletal (MSK) problems. The assessment includes a detailed patient history and a specific physical examination. Research has investigated the reliability of the MDT spinal classification system (Derangement syndrome, Dysfunction syndrome, Postural syndrome, and OTHER), however no study has assessed the reliability of the 10 classifications grouped together as OTHER.

Subcutaneous Implantation of Open Microwell Islet Delivery Devices in Pigs.

Background: Intraportal pancreatic islet transplantation is a treatment option for patients with severe beta cell failure and unstable glycemic control. However, this procedure is associated with loss of beta cells after intrahepatic transplantation. Islet delivery devices (IDDs) implanted at extrahepatic sites may support engraftment and improve survival of pancreatic islets.

Long-term mental health outcomes after corneal transplantation and potential predictors: A multicentre prospective cohort study.

Introduction: To evaluate the long-term effect of corneal transplantation on mental health outcomes and to assess potential predictors of these outcomes.

Methods: For this multicentre prospective cohort study, patients awaiting corneal transplantation were recruited from 11 (academic) hospitals and eye clinics in the Netherlands. Participants (n = 238) completed the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety subscale (HADS-A) and the Dutch ICF Activity Inventory Emotional Health subscale (DAI-EH) and Fatigue subscale (DAI-F) 1 month prior and 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after corneal transplantation.

Patient experiences with person-centred and integrated chronic care, focussing on patients with low socioeconomic status: a qualitative study.

Background: effectiveness of single disease management programs (DMP) in general practice may be limited for patients with low socioeconomic status (SES), as DMPs insufficiently take into account the specific problems and needs of this population. A Person-Centred Integrated Care (PC-IC) approach focusing on patient's needs could address these problems.

Aim: to explore experiences of patients with (multiple) chronic diseases with regard to the acceptability of a general practice-based PC-IC approach, with a focus on patients with low SES, and to establish which modifications are needed to tailor the approach to this group.

The Correlation Between Fear Avoidance Beliefs and Physical Activity in Unilateral Vestibulopathies.
