In the past two decades, minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques have been developed for spinal surgery. Historically, minimizing invasiveness in decompression surgery was initially reported as a MISS technique. In recent years, MISS techniques have also been applied for spinal stabilization techniques, which were defined as minimally invasive spine stabilization (MISt), including percutaneous pedicle screws (PPS) fixation, lateral lumbar interbody fusion, balloon kyphoplasty, percutaneous vertebroplasty, cortical bone trajectory, and cervical total disc replacement.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Lenvatinib paired with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (LEN-TACE) for treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, comparing it to Lenvatinib alone.
  • Results showed that patients receiving LEN-TACE had significantly better overall survival and progression-free survival rates than those on LEN monotherapy.
  • A deep response to the LEN-TACE therapy was linked to the initial response to Lenvatinib, while adverse events were similar between both treatment groups, indicating LEN-TACE is a viable step-up treatment for this condition.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to enhance colorectal cancer (CRC) screening by focusing on interval cancers that arise from fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-negative cases, particularly advanced neoplasms (AN) and sessile serrated lesions (SSL).
  • Asymptomatic adults in their 50s were divided into FIT-negative and TCS-only groups to compare clinical features of AN and SSL; results showed no significant difference in polyp prevalence between the groups but identified risk factors like aging, smoking, and family history for AN.
  • The conclusion suggests that FIT screening may miss CRC and specific precancerous lesions, particularly in the right colon, and recommends annual FIT combined with total colonoscopy (TCS

Multiple Myeloma With a Rare Presentation at Preserved Uninvolved Immunoglobulins.

Cureus

May 2022

Department of General Practice, Emergency and Critical Care Center, Aomori Prefectural Central Hospital, Aomori, JPN.

Multiple myeloma is a neoplastic disease of plasma cells that produces monoclonal immunoglobulins, known as monoclonal proteins, causing hypercalcemia, anemia, renal insufficiency, bone lesion, and other organ damage. In most multiple myeloma, the amount of monoclonal protein correlates with the tumor burden and reflects its prognosis. Uninvolved immunoglobulins are often suppressed as monoclonal protein levels increase as a result of the increasing percentage of myeloma cells in the bone marrow.
