Exosomes: A New Pathway for Cancer Drug Resistance.

Front Oncol

September 2021

Department of Plastic Surgery, The Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles (EVs) that are secreted into body fluids by multiple cell types and are enriched in bioactive molecules, although their exact contents depend on the cells of origin. Studies have shown that exosomes in the tumor microenvironment affect tumor growth, metastasis and drug resistance by mediating intercellular communication and the transport of specific molecules, although their exact mechanisms of action need to be investigated further. In this review, we have summarized current knowledge on the relationship between tumor drug resistance and exosomes, and have discussed the potential applications of exosomes as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated whether surgical patients with stage IB1-IIA2 cervical cancer benefit from having a para-aortic lymphadenectomy (removal of lymph nodes) alongside other surgical procedures.
  • - A comparison was made between two groups of patients (8,802 in total) to see if those who had the para-aortic lymphadenectomy experienced better survival rates than those who did not.
  • - Findings showed no significant difference in 5-year survival outcomes regardless of whether para-aortic lymphadenectomy was performed, suggesting that it isn't recommended, particularly for patients without pelvic lymph node metastasis.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major environmental factor contributing skin damage. As UV exposure is inevitable, it is necessary to pay attention to the underlying molecular mechanisms of UV-induced skin damage to develop effective therapies. tRNA-derived stress-induced RNAs (tiRNAs) and tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) that are a novel class of short, non-coding RNAs.
