Advances in myeloma have resulted in improved prognosis for patients. However complications of the disease and treatment, pose a risk of specific long-term consequences. An audit tool was adapted to assess adherence to the British Society for Haematology guidelines for screening and management of long-term myeloma consequences.

A novel gene editing lexicon strategy for the haemophilia community: Research plan for development and preliminary results.

Introduction: Despite the progress in gene editing platforms like CRISPR/Cas9 with the potential to transform the standard of care for haemophilia, the language used to explain and discuss gene editing is not aligned across the haemophilia community. Here, we present the objective and rationale for developing a clear, consistent, and globally aligned gene editing lexicon to address these communication gaps.

Methods: Effectively communicating complex gene editing concepts requires a clear and consistent vocabulary.

A Pregnancy and Postnatal RCT Among Women With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Overweight/Obesity: The PAIGE2 Study.

Objective: This study examined the influence of a pregnancy and postnatal multicomponent lifestyle intervention for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and overweight/obesity from 6 weeks to 12 months postnatal. The primary outcome was weight at 12 months. Secondary outcomes included change in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG).

Evaluation of the i-gel® Plus supraglottic airway device in elective surgery: a prospective international multicentre study.

Background: The i-gel® Plus is a modified version of the i-gel® supraglottic airway device. It contains a wider drainage port; a longer tip; ramps inside the breathing channel; and an additional port for oxygen delivery. There has been no prospective evaluation of this device in clinical practice.

Laparoscopic Management of Gall Bladder Diseases in Nigeria: A Systematic Review.

Background: Globally, the incidence and mortality from gallbladder diseases is on the rise. The gold standard for the management of symptomatic gallbladder disease is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The practice of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is at a nascent stage in Low and middle-income countries like Nigeria despite its obvious advantages over traditional open cholecystectomy.

Patients' UX Impact on Medication Adherence in Czech Pilot Study for Chronically Ill.

This article presents a comprehensive and multistage approach to the development of the user experience (UX) for an mHealth application targeting older adult patients with chronic diseases, specifically chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study adopts a mixed methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative components. The underlying hypothesis posits that baseline medicine adherence knowledge (measured by the MARS questionnaire), beliefs about medicines (measured by the BMQ questionnaire), and level of user experience (measured by the SUS and UEQ questionnaires) act as predictors of adherence change after a period of usage of the mHealth application.

Does open or closed reduction with internal fixation reduces the incidence of complications in neck of femur fractures in pediatrics: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

The neck of femur fracture (FNF) in children is a rare injury with a high incidence of complications such as avascular necrosis (AVN), coxa-vara and nonunion. The aim of this review is to compare the incidence of complications between open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) and closed reduction with internal fixation (CRIF) of FNF in children. Two independent reviewers searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, COCHRANE and PUBMED databases from inception until April 2022 according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines.

Factors associated with interobserver variation amongst pathologists in the diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia: A systematic review.

Objective: Reproducible diagnoses of endometrial hyperplasia (EH) remains challenging and has potential implications for patient management. This systematic review aimed to identify pathologist-specific factors associated with interobserver variation in the diagnosis and reporting of EH.

Methods: Three electronic databases, namely MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science, were searched from 1st January 2000 to 25th March 2023, using relevant key words and subject headings.

Patient positioning and its impact on perioperative outcomes in children: A narrative review.

Patient positioning interacts with a number of body systems and can impact clinically important perioperative outcomes. In this educational review, we present the available evidence on the impact that patient positioning can have in the pediatric perioperative setting. A literature search was conducted using search terms that focused on pediatric perioperative outcomes prioritized by contemporary research in this area.

Real-world experience of nintedanib for progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease in the UK.

Background: Nintedanib slows progression of lung function decline in patients with progressive fibrosing (PF) interstitial lung disease (ILD) and was recommended for this indication within the United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service in Scotland in June 2021 and in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in November 2021. To date, there has been no national evaluation of the use of nintedanib for PF-ILD in a real-world setting.

Methods: 26 UK centres were invited to take part in a national service evaluation between 17 November 2021 and 30 September 2022.

Background: Increased antimicrobial resistance patterns lead to limited options for antimicrobial agents, affecting patient health and increasing hospital costs.

Objectives: To investigate the antimicrobial prescribing patterns at two district hospitals in Northern Ireland before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A mixed prospective-retrospective study was designed to compare pre- and during pandemic antimicrobial prescribing data in both hospitals using a Global Point Prevalence Survey.

Background: In some countries, intravenous ferric derisomaltose (FDI) is only licensed for treating iron deficiency with anemia. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of intravenous FDI in a subgroup of patients with anemia in the IRONMAN (Effectiveness of Intravenous (IV) Iron Treatment Versus Standard Care in Patients With Heart Failure and Iron Deficiency) trial.

Method And Results: IRONMAN enrolled patients with heart failure, a left ventricular ejection fraction of ≤45%, and iron deficiency (ferritin <100 µg/L or transferrin saturation of <20%), 771 (68%) of whom had anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL for women and <13 g/dL for men).

Precis: COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the waiting times for cervical screening and colposcopy but no impact on the severity of disease outcomes.

Abstract: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the cervical screening programme and colposcopy services in Northern Ireland. All new patients referred to colposcopy following an abnormal cervical smear result from September to November 2019 and 2020 were included.

The impact on midwives and their practice after caring for women who have a traumatic childbirth: A systematic review.

Background: Women's birth experiences can range from positive and satisfying to negative and traumatizing. Midwives caring for women can also be exposed to these traumatic childbirth experiences. There is a paucity of research on the impact these experiences have on midwives and their practice.

Assay interference as a cause of false positive troponin T elevation in emergency department patients.

Background: Troponin assays are used in the diagnosis of myocardial injury and may show elevated results for a variety of reasons. However it is increasingly recognised that cardiac troponin elevation may in some cases be due to assay interference. This is of significant importance as a misdiagnosis of myocardial injury may lead to unnecessary and potentially harmful investigation and treatment for patients.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the patterns of antimicrobial use and the incidence of pathogens in primary and secondary healthcare settings in Northern Ireland.

Methods: Data were collected on antibiotic use and Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens from primary and secondary healthcare settings in Northern Ireland for the period before (January 2015-March 2020) and during (April 2020-December 2021) the pandemic. Time series intervention analysis methods were utilized.
