Introduction: Despite the progress in gene editing platforms like CRISPR/Cas9 with the potential to transform the standard of care for haemophilia, the language used to explain and discuss gene editing is not aligned across the haemophilia community. Here, we present the objective and rationale for developing a clear, consistent, and globally aligned gene editing lexicon to address these communication gaps.

Methods: Effectively communicating complex gene editing concepts requires a clear and consistent vocabulary.

Int J Nurs Stud Adv

December 2024

School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast, MBC Building, 97 Lisburn Road, Belfast BT9 7BL, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic kidney disease affects around 13% of the global population and is expected to be a major cause of life years lost by 2040, with end-stage kidney disease leading to complications like renal cachexia, which is not well understood and has limited treatment options.
  • - The study aims to understand the experiences of individuals with renal cachexia and their carers through in-depth interviews, adhering to ethical research practices in a UK healthcare setting.
  • - Seven participants (four patients and three carers) were recruited, with the data analyzed to identify six key themes related to their lived experiences, including issues like appetite loss, weight decline, social withdrawal, and emotional struggles.

Patients' UX Impact on Medication Adherence in Czech Pilot Study for Chronically Ill.

Behav Sci (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc, Křížkovského 10, 77900 Olomouc, Czech Republic.

This article presents a comprehensive and multistage approach to the development of the user experience (UX) for an mHealth application targeting older adult patients with chronic diseases, specifically chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study adopts a mixed methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative components. The underlying hypothesis posits that baseline medicine adherence knowledge (measured by the MARS questionnaire), beliefs about medicines (measured by the BMQ questionnaire), and level of user experience (measured by the SUS and UEQ questionnaires) act as predictors of adherence change after a period of usage of the mHealth application.

The neck of femur fracture (FNF) in children is a rare injury with a high incidence of complications such as avascular necrosis (AVN), coxa-vara and nonunion. The aim of this review is to compare the incidence of complications between open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) and closed reduction with internal fixation (CRIF) of FNF in children. Two independent reviewers searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, COCHRANE and PUBMED databases from inception until April 2022 according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines.

The Impact of Ferric Derisomaltose on Cardiovascular and Noncardiovascular Events in Patients With Anemia, Iron Deficiency, and Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction.

J Card Fail

May 2024

Department of Cardiology, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, Portsmouth, UK; College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK; Faculty of Science and Health, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, UK. Electronic address:

Background: In some countries, intravenous ferric derisomaltose (FDI) is only licensed for treating iron deficiency with anemia. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of intravenous FDI in a subgroup of patients with anemia in the IRONMAN (Effectiveness of Intravenous (IV) Iron Treatment Versus Standard Care in Patients With Heart Failure and Iron Deficiency) trial.

Method And Results: IRONMAN enrolled patients with heart failure, a left ventricular ejection fraction of ≤45%, and iron deficiency (ferritin <100 µg/L or transferrin saturation of <20%), 771 (68%) of whom had anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL for women and <13 g/dL for men).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how accurately the collapsibility of the internal jugular vein (IJV) can predict fluid responsiveness in patients who are breathing on their own after heart surgery.
  • - Conducted with 54 patients post-cardiac surgery, results showed that while those who responded to fluid therapy had lower IJV diameters at baseline, the overall ability of IJV collapsibility to predict fluid responsiveness was limited.
  • - The findings concluded that IJV collapsibility is not a reliable predictor for fluid responsiveness in these patients, with a sensitivity of 76.5% and a specificity of only 38.9%.

Assay interference as a cause of false positive troponin T elevation in emergency department patients.

Int J Cardiol

October 2023

Belfast HSC Trust, First Floor, West Wing, Royal Victoria Hospital, Grosvenor Road, Belfast BT12 6BA, UK.

Background: Troponin assays are used in the diagnosis of myocardial injury and may show elevated results for a variety of reasons. However it is increasingly recognised that cardiac troponin elevation may in some cases be due to assay interference. This is of significant importance as a misdiagnosis of myocardial injury may lead to unnecessary and potentially harmful investigation and treatment for patients.
