Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores using serum kallistatin as a potential biomarker for diagnosing tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA), suggesting that the commonly used C-reactive protein (CRP) lacks specificity.
  • - The research involved 60 patients (30 controls undergoing elective surgery and 30 hospitalized with TOA) at Antalya Training and Research Hospital in Türkiye, with various health parameters analyzed through blood samples.
  • - Significant differences in multiple blood markers, including serum kallistatin levels, were found between the TOA group and controls, indicating that kallistatin could effectively aid in TOA diagnosis, although larger studies are needed for validation.

Background/aims:  Diverticulosis coli is a common disorder of the colon, and a luminal pressure increase in the colon is a proposed mechanism in disease pathogenesis. Toilet types used around the world can be fundamentally categorized into 2 categories: sitting toilets and squatting toilets. Squatting toilets are shown to lead to better puborectalis muscle relaxation, wider anorectal angle, and require less straining compared to sitting toilets.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data in Türkiye, focusing on prognostic outcomes and influencing factors for patients aged 18 and older who were treated at 28 medical centers.
  • It found a survival rate upon hospital discharge of only 4.4%, with a significant majority of patients not receiving bystander CPR, which was only performed in 2.9% of cases.
  • Key predictors for better outcomes included male gender, initial shockable heart rhythms, shorter prehospital CPR duration, and no need for CPR in the emergency department, highlighting the importance of timely and effective CPR in emergencies.

Introduction: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the predominant condition responsible for acute abdominal pain across all age demographics. The purpose of this research is to determine if the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) and modified HALP (m-HALP) scores differ between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis in patients diagnosed with AA who have applied to the emergency department (ED). Additionally, this study aims to investigate whether HALP and m-HALP scores are superior to other biomarkers.

: The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effects of inflammation markers on infection and mortality in patients over 65 years of age monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU). In this study, we attempted to determine the significance of the pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV); the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR); the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR); the monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR); the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII); the systemic immune response index (SIRI); multi-inflammatory indices (MIIs) 1, 2, and 3; and the CRP/albumin ratio (a new biomarker) as prognostic and mortality markers in patients over 65 years of age being monitored in the ICU. : This multicenter, retrospective, cohort study was conducted on patients aged 65 and over who were admitted to two tertiary-level ICUs.

Purpose: Non-muscle invasive bladder cancers (NMIBC) constitute approximately 75% of bladder cancer cases. Primary transurethral resection (TUR) plays a pivotal role in both diagnosis and treatment. However, despite initial resection, tumors are often missed, leaving behind microscopic residual tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates the long-term effects of saphenous nerve (SN) injuries resulting from hamstring tendon harvesting during ACL reconstruction, focusing on clinical results and patient satisfaction over two years.
  • A retrospective review of 159 patients showed that 54.7% experienced SN injuries right after surgery, with some still having issues at the final follow-up.
  • Persistent injuries significantly affected patients' daily activities and functional outcomes, with a notable correlation between these injuries and higher ACL re-rupture rates.

Viral load monitoring is important in identifying patients at risk of developing cytomegalovirus (CMV) related complications after transplantation and for this purpose, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (Rt-qPCR) tests are most commonly used. The main problem in CMV DNA Rt-qPCR tests that make quantitative measurements is that there are significant differences in measurements performed with different kits in different laboratories. Comparability of viral load measurements between laboratories has increased with the introduction of quantitative PCR tests calibrated with the CMV International Quantitation Standard (IQS) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The objective of this study was to assess the prognostic relevance of Stanniocalcin-2 (STC2) expression, as determined via immunohistochemistry in tumor tissue, in a cohort of 83 patients diagnosed with glioblastoma who underwent maximal safe surgical resection followed by radiotherapy concurrent with adjuvant temozolomide. STC2 expression levels were categorized using a 3-tiered semiquantitative system: negative expression (level 0-), low expression (level 1+), and high expression (levels 2 + and 3+). Patients were categorized into 2 distinct groups according to their STC2 expression levels: negative STC2 (-/+) and positive STC2 (++/+++).

Purpose: To determine whether there are quantitative changes in macular, choriocapillary, and peripapillary microvascular structures using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) due to the presence of lupus nephritis (LN) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to investigate the correlation between these quantitative values and disease duration.

Methods: Fifty -five patients followed up in the rheumatology clinic with an SLE diagnosis were evaluated. As the control group, 61 eyes of 61 age- and gender-matched healthy individuals were included.
