Background: Circulatory support with a catheter-based microaxial flow pump (mAFP) plays a major role in the treatment of severe cardiogenic shock. In most patients who fail to recover while on temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS) and who are not eligible for heart transplantation, durable left ventricular assist device (dLVAD) implantation is usually considered a reliable option. This study aimed to describe the outcome of dLVAD therapy following mAFP support and to identify predictors of mortality.

Ankyloglossia refers to a congenitally tight lingual frenulum that limits the motion of the tongue. Whether the release of a tight lingual frenulum in neonates improves breastfeeding is not clear. Because many of the symptoms of ankyloglossia overlap those of other breastfeeding difficulties, a team partnership is necessary.

Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy (LITT) in Recurrent Glioblastoma: What Window of Opportunity for This Treatment?

Technol Cancer Res Treat

May 2024

Neurosurgery Unit, Department of Neuroscience "Rita Levi Montalcini", "Città della Salute e della Scienza" University Hospital, University of Turin, Turin, Italy.

Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option in neurosurgery for intracranial tumors, including recurrent gliomas. The technique employs the thermal ablation of target tissue to achieve tumor control with real-time monitoring of the extent by magnetic resonance thermometry, allowing targeted thermal injury to the lesion. Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy has gained interest as a treatment option for recurrent gliomas due to its minimally invasive nature, shorter recovery times, ability to be used even in patients with numerous comorbidities, and potential to provide local tumor control.

Article Synopsis
  • - The BOX trial examined the effects of different blood pressure and oxygenation targets, as well as varying durations of fever prevention, on the health outcomes of comatose patients after cardiac arrest, ultimately finding no significant differences in long-term disability or mortality rates.
  • - Conducted as a randomized controlled trial, 789 patients were assigned to either low or high blood pressure targets, restrictive or liberal oxygenation levels, and differing durations of fever control, with a one-year follow-up for mortality.
  • - Results showed similar one-year mortality rates across all tested interventions, indicating that neither the low/high blood pressure nor the restrictive/liberal oxygenation strategies significantly impacted patient survival outcomes after one year.

In recent years, SGLT2 inhibitors have become an integral part of heart failure therapy, and several mechanisms contributing to cardiorenal protection have been identified. In this study, we place special emphasis on the atria and investigate acute electrophysiological effects of dapagliflozin to assess the antiarrhythmic potential of SGLT2 inhibitors. Direct electrophysiological effects of dapagliflozin were investigated in patch clamp experiments on isolated atrial cardiomyocytes.

To reduce adhesions after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, pericardial closure using an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) patch has been suggested. However, as foreign material, ePTFE patches could increase the risk of infectious complications. In this single-center retrospective study, we investigated outcomes of pericardial closure using an ePTFE patch in LVAD implantation.

Late-life-initiated dietary interventions show limited efficacy in extending longevity or mitigating frailty, yet the underlying causes remain unclear. Here we studied the age-related fasting response of the short-lived killifish Nothobranchius furzeri. Transcriptomic analysis uncovered the existence of a fasting-like transcriptional program in the adipose tissue of old fish that overrides the feeding response, setting the tissue in persistent metabolic quiescence.

Cell Guiding Multicomponent Nanoyarn Tendon Scaffolds with Tunable Morphology and Flexibility.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

September 2023

Centre for Textile Science and Engineering, Department of Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Ghent University, Tech Lane Science Park 70A, 9052 Ghent, Belgium.

Nanofibrous scaffolds are widely investigated for tendon tissue engineering due to their porous structure, high flexibility, and the ability to guide cells in a preferred direction. Previous research has shown that providing a microenvironment similar to in vivo settings improves tissue regeneration. Therefore, in this work, ingenious multicomponent nanoyarn scaffolds that mimic the fibrillar and tubular structures of tendons are developed for the first time through electrospinning and bundling nanoyarns followed by electrospinning of a nanofibrous shell around the bundle.

Aims: Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a common complication and a major cause of death. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and neurofilament light chain (NfL) are released after brain injury and elevated concentrations of both are associated with poor neurological outcome. We explored the influence of haemolysis on the prognostic performance of NSE and NfL.
