Aim: To evaluate the predictive value of preoperative echocardiographic parameters for occurrence of VAs in patients with preexisting ICD undergoing LVAD implantation.

Methods And Results: All consecutive patients (n = 264) with previous ICD who underwent LVAD surgery between May 2011 and December 2019 at our institution were included. The patients were predominantly male (89%) with NICM (59%) and a mean age of 59 ± 10 years.

Model-Based Dose Identification of Dalbavancin for Long-Term Suppressive Outpatient Treatment of Ventricular Assist Device Infections.

Increasing evidence suggests that dalbavancin is an effective long-term treatment for ventricular assist device (VAD) infections, with various prolonged dosing regimens currently in use. This retrospective study aimed to assess dalbavancin pharmacokinetics in VAD patients and identify optimal, feasible dosing regimens for long-term suppressive outpatient therapy. Data from Heidelberg University Hospital's VAD register were analyzed using non-linear mixed-effects modeling for pharmacokinetic analysis and dosing simulations (Lixoft).

Background: Circulatory support with a catheter-based microaxial flow pump (mAFP) plays a major role in the treatment of severe cardiogenic shock. In most patients who fail to recover while on temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS) and who are not eligible for heart transplantation, durable left ventricular assist device (dLVAD) implantation is usually considered a reliable option. This study aimed to describe the outcome of dLVAD therapy following mAFP support and to identify predictors of mortality.

Methods: In this retrospective, single-centre analysis, surgical complications and early graft outcomes of ipsilateral kidney re-transplantations from January 2007 to December 2017 were compared with primary transplantations and contralateral re-transplantations.

This review gives an update on the latest insights into nutritional interventions highlighting the potential of specific dietary regimens prior to transplantation aiming for organ protection and the interplay between dietary intake and gut microbiota.

Recent Findings: Nutrition holds the potential to optimize patients' health prior to and after surgery, it may enhance patients' ability to cope with the procedure-associated stress and it may accelerate their recovery from surgery.

Intraoperative haemoadsorption for antithrombotic drug removal during cardiac surgery: initial report of the international safe and timely antithrombotic removal (STAR) registry.

Intraoperative antithrombotic drug removal by haemoadsorption is a novel strategy to reduce perioperative bleeding in patients on antithrombotic drugs undergoing cardiac surgery. The international STAR registry reports real-world clinical outcomes associated with this application. All patients underwent cardiac surgery before completing the recommended washout period.

Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option in neurosurgery for intracranial tumors, including recurrent gliomas. The technique employs the thermal ablation of target tissue to achieve tumor control with real-time monitoring of the extent by magnetic resonance thermometry, allowing targeted thermal injury to the lesion. Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy has gained interest as a treatment option for recurrent gliomas due to its minimally invasive nature, shorter recovery times, ability to be used even in patients with numerous comorbidities, and potential to provide local tumor control.

Acute antiarrhythmic effects of SGLT2 inhibitors-dapagliflozin lowers the excitability of atrial cardiomyocytes.

In recent years, SGLT2 inhibitors have become an integral part of heart failure therapy, and several mechanisms contributing to cardiorenal protection have been identified. In this study, we place special emphasis on the atria and investigate acute electrophysiological effects of dapagliflozin to assess the antiarrhythmic potential of SGLT2 inhibitors. Direct electrophysiological effects of dapagliflozin were investigated in patch clamp experiments on isolated atrial cardiomyocytes.

Pericardial Closure With Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene Patch in Left Ventricular Assist Device Surgery.

To reduce adhesions after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, pericardial closure using an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) patch has been suggested. However, as foreign material, ePTFE patches could increase the risk of infectious complications. In this single-center retrospective study, we investigated outcomes of pericardial closure using an ePTFE patch in LVAD implantation.

A short length of hospital stay is not associated with risk of readmission among hip fracture patients - a Swedish national register-based cohort study.

Background: Hospital length of stay (LoS) after a hip fracture likely mirrors health status; however, a too short hospitalization might increase the risk of readmission. In this national register-based study, we investigated the association between LoS after a hip fracture and the risk of readmissions.

Methods: 73,551 patients with a first hip fracture between 2012 and 2019 were followed for 4 months after discharge.

Activation of neurokinin-III receptors modulates human atrial TASK-1 currents.

Rationale: The neurokinin-III receptor was recently shown to regulate atrial cardiomyocyte excitability by inhibiting atrial background potassium currents. TASK-1 (hK3.1) two-pore-domain potassium channels, which are expressed atrial-specifically in the human heart, contribute significantly to atrial background potassium currents.

Nanofibrous scaffolds are widely investigated for tendon tissue engineering due to their porous structure, high flexibility, and the ability to guide cells in a preferred direction. Previous research has shown that providing a microenvironment similar to in vivo settings improves tissue regeneration. Therefore, in this work, ingenious multicomponent nanoyarn scaffolds that mimic the fibrillar and tubular structures of tendons are developed for the first time through electrospinning and bundling nanoyarns followed by electrospinning of a nanofibrous shell around the bundle.

Aims: Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a common complication and a major cause of death. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and neurofilament light chain (NfL) are released after brain injury and elevated concentrations of both are associated with poor neurological outcome. We explored the influence of haemolysis on the prognostic performance of NSE and NfL.

Methods: A single-center analysis of health status was performed including 45 patients with HeartMate 3 (HM 3) implantation using the 12-items Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score (HADS) questionnaires.

Although prescription proportions are increasing for both men and women, they remain low, especially among individuals aged 90 and older. Improved Fracture Liaison Services could increase the prescription proportions and should be bolstered.
