Predicting distant recurrence of endometrial cancer (EC) is crucial for personalized adjuvant treatment. The current gold standard of combined pathological and molecular profiling is costly, hampering implementation. Here we developed HECTOR (histopathology-based endometrial cancer tailored outcome risk), a multimodal deep learning prognostic model using hematoxylin and eosin-stained, whole-slide images and tumor stage as input, on 2,072 patients from eight EC cohorts including the PORTEC-1/-2/-3 randomized trials.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) represents one of the principal causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) is recommended for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony in women who do not respond to pharmacological first-line treatment. The success of UBT in bleeding control is related to the correct positioning of the device, since incorrect insertion can be associated with ineffectiveness and requires time-consuming repositioning maneuvers, with a further increase in blood loss.

Biomedicines

April 2024

Orthopaedic Biotechnology Laboratory, IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, Via C. Belgioioso 173, 20157 Milan, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the use of human platelet lysate (hPL) as a substitute for fetal bovine serum (FBS) to create macrophage models for clinical applications, particularly in immune response testing.
  • Primary human monocytes were differentiated into different types of macrophages using either hPL or FBS, and the study evaluated their protein secretion and surface marker expressions (like CD80 and CD206).
  • Results indicated that while hPL maintained similar macrophage marker regulation compared to FBS, it exhibited lower baseline levels of certain markers, necessitating careful interpretation of results in immunomodulatory assays using hPL.

Sex disparities in mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in chronic kidney disease.

Clin Kidney J

March 2024

Department of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation Azienda Ospedaliera 'Bianchi-Melacrino-Morelli' & CNR-IFC, Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Sex (biologically determined) and gender (socially constructed) modulate manifestations and prognosis of a vast number of diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). CVD remains the leading cause of death in CKD patients. Population-based studies indicate that women present a higher prevalence of CKD and experience less CVD than men in all CKD stages, although this is not as clear in patients on dialysis or transplantation.
