Article Synopsis
  • Pyometra is a serious inflammatory disease affecting older intact female dogs, particularly during the diestrus stage, and can lead to significant health issues.
  • The study examined five types of aquaporins (proteins that help transport water) in uterine tissue and their links to various health markers like blood lipopolysaccharide levels and antioxidant activity in dogs with pyometra.
  • Results showed changes in aquaporin levels between affected dogs and control dogs, including downregulation of AQP1, AQP2, and AQP5, while AQP9 and AQP3 were upregulated, suggesting a complex relationship between these proteins and the disease's progression.

The placental cholinergic system; known as an important factor in intracellular metabolic activities, regulation of placental vascular tone, placental development, and neurotransmission; can be affected by persistent organic pesticides, particularly organochlorine pesticides(OCPs), which can influence various epigenetic regulations and molecular pathways. Although OCPs are legally prohibited, trace amounts of the persistent dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDT) are still found in the environment, making prenatal exposure inevitable. In this study, the effects of 2,4'-DDT and 4,4'-DDT; and its breakdown product 4,4'-DDE in the environment on placental cholinergic system were evaluated with regards to cholinergic genes.

Toward understanding the role of the interstitial tissue architects: Possible functions of telocytes in the male gonad.

Theriogenology

March 2024

Department of Animal Anatomy and Preclinical Sciences, University Centre of Veterinary Medicine JU-UA, University of Agriculture in Krakow, Mickiewicza 24/28, 30-059, Krakow, Poland. Electronic address:

Telocytes represent a relatively recently discovered population of interstitial cells with a unique morphological structure that distinguishes them from other neighboring cells. Through their long protrusions extending from the cell body, telocytes create microenvironments via tissue compartmentalization and create homo- and hetero-cellular junctions. These establish a three-dimensional network enabling the maintenance of interstitial compartment homeostasis through regulation of extracellular matrix organization and activity, structural support, paracrine and juxtracrine communication, immunomodulation, immune surveillance, cell survival, and apoptosis.

3D Printed Biodegradable Polyurethaneurea Elastomer Recapitulates Skeletal Muscle Structure and Function.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

November 2021

Ankara University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Ankara 06560, Turkey.

Effective skeletal muscle tissue engineering relies on control over the scaffold architecture for providing muscle cells with the required directionality, together with a mechanical property match with the surrounding tissue. Although recent advances in 3D printing fulfill the first requirement, the available synthetic polymers either are too rigid or show unfavorable surface and degradation profiles for the latter. In addition, natural polymers that are generally used as hydrogels lack the required mechanical stability to withstand the forces exerted during muscle contraction.
