Article Synopsis
  • Congenital diarrhea can be tough to diagnose, especially when standard tests don't give clear results.
  • A female infant presented symptoms of osteopetrosis along with unexplained diarrhea, leading to genetic testing that uncovered a significant deletion on chromosome 16p13.3.
  • This case highlights the need to investigate genetic factors, like 16p13.3 deletions, when diagnosing conditions that seem to involve multiple symptoms.

Background: This study aimed to examine the effects of both obesity and bariatric surgery on gut microbiome, dietary intake, as well as metabolic and inflammatory parameters.

Methods: All participants (15 with morbid obesity who had bariatric surgery, 8 with morbid obesity and 11 non-obese) were followed up for a 6-month period with interviews at baseline (M0), at the end of 3 (M3) and 6 months (M6). Dietary assessment was done, and blood and faecal samples were collected.

-allylcysteine inhibits chondrocyte inflammation to reduce human osteoarthritis via targeting RAGE, TLR4, JNK, and Nrf2 signaling: comparison with colchicine.

Biochem Cell Biol

October 2021

Department of Medical Pharmacology, Cellular Stress Response and Signal Transduction Research Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University, Beşevler, Ankara, Turkey.

The discovery of new pharmacological agents is needed to control the progression of osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by joint cartilage damage. Human OA chondrocyte (OAC) cultures were either applied to -allylcysteine (SAC), a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative, or colchicine, an ancient anti-inflammatory therapeutic, for 24 h. SAC or colchicine did not change viability at 1 nM-10 µM but inhibited p-JNK/pan-JNK.

Background/aim: It has been suggested that there is a significant progress in coronary artery disease (CAD) by many pathophysiological mechanisms. Nondipper hypertension (NDH) has been shown to have higher target organ damage and have a higher rate of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In this study, we investigated the effect of nondipper hypertension on the progression of coronary atherosclerosis.

Osteoarthritic chondrocytes show an over-activity of inflammatory catabolic mediators, and olive products have attracted attention because they were discovered to have some benefits on osteoarthritis patients. We investigated the mechanisms of action of olive leaf polyphenolic compounds in osteoarthritic chondrocytes (OACs) using a standardized leaf extract, ZeyEX, and its main phenolic component, oleuropein, also compared with anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen. OACs, isolated from joint-cartilages of Grade 4 OA patients, were found to express COMP and MMP-9 throughout their culture period.

Background/aim: We aimed to investigate the relationship between risk factors and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a young population with stable angina pectoris (SAP).

Materials And Methods: A total of571 individuals younger than 60 years old, admitted to the outpatient clinic with chest pain and referred for coronary angiography between January 2015 and December 2017, were included in the study. All clinical and biochemical parameters were documented in the hospital records.

The effects of physical therapeutic agents on serum levels of stress hormones in patients with osteoarthritis.

Medicine (Baltimore)

August 2016

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, School of Medicine, Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu Department of Medical Biochemistry, Istanbul Research and Education Hospital, Istanbul Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ankara Research and Education Hospital, Ankara, Turkey.

To investigate the effects of physical agents on the levels of stress hormones in patients with osteoarthritis (OA).Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, hot packs, and therapeutic ultrasound were applied to the lumbar region and knees of patients with OA. Blood samples were taken for the measurement of the serum levels of glucose, insulin (INS), growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), cortisol (COR), and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) immediately before and after the 1st session, to investigate the acute effects of those physical agents on the endocrine system.

February 2017

Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Faculty, Hitit University, Çorum, Turkey.

To evaluate the efficacy of golimumab on severe and frequent recurrent anterior uveitis in patients with HLA-B27-positive ankylosing spondylitis. In this study, 15 eyes of 12 HLA-B27-positive AS patients with resistant anterior uveitis who received 50 mg of subcutaneous golimumab (Gol) per month due to frequent uveitis recurrences were analyzed retrospectively between May 2013 and October 2015. Assessment criteria were uveitis activity, the number of recurrence of uveitis, visual acuity, systemic corticosteroid, or other drug requirement for maintenance of remission of AU.

Background: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas are the most common pituitary adenomas in adults and cause significant morbidity unless adequately treated.

Methods: This study retrospectively assessed the medical records of 160 patients operated via pure endonasal endoscopy. The presenting symptoms, results of neurologic and visual examinations, levels of pituitary hormones, results of radiologic examinations, size of the adenoma, rates of resection, results of postoperative visual examination, and pituitary hormone levels at follow-up were recorded to establish the appropriate approach, operative criteria, and outcomes of patients with nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma.

A median sternotomy is the most common approach for cardiac and great vessel surgery. After a median sternotomy, healing complications such as instability, nonunion, and infection, are rare but devastating. Predisposing factors for sternal complications are old age, diabetes, steroid treatment, postmenopause state, obesity, reoperation, and the use of bilateral internal mammary arteries.

Singapore Med J

September 2006

First Physical and Medicine Rehabilitation Deparment, Ankara Research and Education Hospital, Ulucanlar cad. 06010, Ankara, Turkey.

Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a syndrome expressed by chronic widespread body pain which leads to reduced physical function and frequent use of healthcare services. This study was performed to examine the muscle performance comprising abdominal and lumbar muscle strength, and measurement of chest expansion in osteoporotic patients with FMS; to evaluate the relation between muscle performance, pain severity, clinical findings and physical activity; and to compare the results with the osteoporotic control group.

Methods: 44 osteoporotic women with FMS and 46 osteoporotic women who were physically inactive underwent measurements of three parameters: abdominal and lumbar muscle strength, and chest expansion.
