Background: The presence of lower extremity pain may be associated with poorer motor recovery, impaired activities of daily living (ADL), reduced quality of life, and disability in patients with stroke.

Objective: The aims of the study were to describe the characteristics of lower extremity pain conditions and to evaluate the impact of lower extremity pain on clinical variables, and health-related quality of life in patients with stroke.

Methods: One hundred and eighty-five patients with stroke who have self-reported pain in the lower extremity were included in the study.

Background: Immobilization of the extremities after stroke is known to be the foremost reason of articular cartilage degeneration and musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) has become increasingly important in the assessment of joint cartilage. To the best of our knowledge, US measurements of the metacarpal and talar cartilage thicknesses in hemiplegic patients after stroke have not been performed before.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to explore whether metacarpal and talar cartilage thicknesses were affected after stroke using US.

EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM basic scanning protocols revisited in children.

Eur J Phys Rehabil Med

December 2016

Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Hacettepe University Medical School, Ankara, Turkey.

High-resolution ultrasound (US) has been widely used in the evaluation of adult musculoskeletal disorders with several established high-quality scanning protocols. Despite the fact that US use is even more advantageous in the pediatric population, normal sonographic images of the major joints are lacking in children. Due to the excessive amount of hyaline cartilage, the bony landmarks can hardly be recognized.

Case: A patient who developed hemiplegia related to a hemorrhagic stroke and who had not been started on venous thromboembolism prophylaxis or a physical medicine and rehabilitation program was admitted to our clinic on the 4th month after the event. Our patient had pain, swelling, redness, increased temperature at the right lower extremity, range of motion limitation at the hip and knee, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) at the same side lower extremity, and heterotopic ossification (HO) at the hip.

Conclusions: Our case is presented to emphasize the HO that is not frequently seen after stroke, the importance of DVT prophylaxis in hemorrhagic stroke, and the association between DVT, HO, and CRPS.
