Turk J Med Sci

October 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Ankara Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of four surgical techniques—Pemberton osteotomy (PO), Salter innominate osteotomy (SO), open reduction (OR), and closed reduction (CR)—for treating developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in 101 hips across 82 patients from 2017 to 2023.
  • Results indicated that PO provided the best corrections in acetabular angles and had a lower incidence of avascular necrosis (AVN) compared to other methods, although some AVN still occurred across all treated groups.
  • The study concludes that accurate age-related acetabular measurements are crucial for treatment decisions, and early detection allows for effective conservative

Exposure to light-emitting diode (LED) light is a primary cause of retinal damage, resulting in vision loss. Several plant-derived substances, such as lutein and quercetagetin (QCG), show promise in supporting eye health. In this study, the impact of lutein/zeaxanthin (L/Z, Lutemax 2020) and QCG were evaluated individually and together in a rat model of LED-induced retinal damage.

Insight is a continuous and multidimensional phenomenon, including awareness of having an illness, the presence of symptoms and accurate symptom attribution, the need for treatment, and the consequences of treatment. Good insight into illness is associated with better adherence to treatment, better cognitive, psychosocial, and vocational functioning along with less symptom severity, decreased relapses, and hospitalizations. Several tools are used for insight evaluation.

Prolactin (PRL) is an endocrine hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland that has a variety of physiological effects, including milk production, immune system regulation, and anti-inflammatory effects. Elevated levels of PRL have been found in several viral infections, including 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), a viral pathogen that has recently spread worldwide. PRL production is increased in SARS-CoV2 infection.

The Role of Ultrasonographic Inferior Vena Cava Measurement in the Volume-Based Classification of Patients With Hyponatremia.

J Ultrasound Med

October 2023

Department of Emergency Medicine, Ankara Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey.

Objectives: To demonstrate the role of inferior vena cava (IVC) collapsibility in the assessment of volume status in hyponatremic critically ill patients in the emergency department (ED) with bedside IVC imaging and to predict volume status with response to fluid therapy.

Methods: A prospective 110 hypotonic hyponatremic patients aged >18 years with a serum sodium level under 125 mEq/L and at least one symptom of hyponatremia, who presented or referred to the ED was conducted. Demographical, clinical, and laboratory characteristics with bedside measurement of IVC diameter of patients were recorded.

Introduction: Many of the activities in daily living require different walking skills such as straight walking (SW), walking with turning (WwT), curved walking (CW) or backward walking (BW) in a dual-task condition. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the dual task cost (DTC) during different types of walking. Therefore, this study was planned to compare the DTC during different types of walking in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) and healthy controls.

Comparison of maintenance regimens in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia patients.

Leuk Res

May 2023

University of Health and Sciences, Gulhane Training and Research Hospital, Department of Hematology, Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Maintenance therapy in APL is still a standard especially in high-risk patients treated with chemotherapy+ATRA combination whereas the role of the maintenance therapy in low-risk patients is controversial. This study aims to compare the efficacy and toxicity of ATRA monotherapy and ATRA+MTX+ 6-MP combination as the maintenance treatment for 2 years in APL patients who achieved molecular complete response after induction and consolidation with ATRA+chemotherapy. A total of 71 patients from 4 different centers were included in this study.
