HNF1A gene p.I27L is associated with co-existing preeclampsia in gestational diabetes mellitus.

The association of the FTO gene and HNF1α gene on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and preeclampsia remains unclear. This is the first study to examine whether HNF1α gene and FTO gene were associated with having GDM and preeclampsia in Turkish women. Healthy pregnant women ( = 101) and women with GDM ( = 169) were included.

Parathyroidectomy improves cardiovascular risk factors in normocalcemic and hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism.

Background: Parathyroidectomy has ameliorated cardiovascular risk factors in patients with hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but the effect of parathyroidectomy on normocalcemic PHPT is not exactly known. This case-controlled study aimed to investigate the effect of parathyroidectomy on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with normocalcemic and hypercalcemic PHPT.

Methods: Subjects with normocalcemic PHPT (n = 35), age- and sex-matched hypercalcemic PHPT (n = 60) and age- and sex-matched control (n = 60) were included.

VDR gene FokI polymorphism as a poor prognostic factor for papillary thyroid cancer.

This is the first study to investigate the effect of vitamin D receptor ( VDR) gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms on the clinicopathologic features of papillary thyroid cancer in Turkey. A total of 165 patients with papillary thyroid cancer and 172 controls were included in this case-control study. VDR gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), ApaI (rs7975232), and TaqI (rs731236) were evaluated using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction.

Visceral Obesity Mediates the Association Between Metabolic Syndrome and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and visceral obesity are more prevalent in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We investigated the association of visceral fat (VF) measures with the components of MetS in OSAS patients with different severity levels, according to World Health Organization (WHO, 1999), National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III, 2001), and International Diabetes Federation (IDF, 2005) definitions.

Patients And Methods: Study population was grouped according to polysomnography results as non-OSAS [who had apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) <5, n = 51], mild OSAS (5 < AHI <15, n = 52), moderate OSAS (15 < AHI <30, n = 53), and severe OSAS (AHI >30, n = 53).

The Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on the Success and Complications of Percutaneous Nephrolitotomy.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Metabolic syndrome (MetS) on the success and complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL).

Methods: Two hundred ten patients who had undergone PNL for kidney stones in our clinic between May 2012 and May 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups based on whether they had diagnostic criteria for MetS.

Alpha adrenergic receptors in renal pelvis and calyces: can rat models be used?

We aimed, in this study, to determine the distribution of α-1 AR subtypes in rat and human pelvis and calyces, and to evaluate, by comparing these two species, the possibility of rats to be used as models for humans. Twenty patients with renal carcinoma were included into the study. The patients underwent radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Addition of lidocaine to levobupivacaine reduces intrathecal block duration: randomized controlled trial.

Background: The duration of the spinal block is a concern for anesthetists. Low dose intrathecal lidocaine has vasodilatory effects and increases the local anesthetic clearance from the intrathecal space. The aim was to investigate whether this effect of lidocaine can be used to increase the resolution of levobupivacaine spinal anesthesia.

The presence and distribution of alpha adrenergic receptors in human renal pelvis and calyces.

In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the presence of Alpha (α) 1 receptors and subtypes in human pelvis and calyces, because an agent to facilitate kidney stone movement and help decrease pain may be an α 1 adrenergic blocker, as used in ureteral stones. Twenty patients who applied to our clinic for renal cell carcinoma were enrolled to the study. All patients underwent radical nephrectomy.

Our experience with percutaneous nephrolithotomy in pediatric renal stone disease.

Objective: In this paper, we present our experience with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) in a pediatric patient group.

The effects of ciprofloxacin and ursodeoxycholic acid on bacterial translocation in obstructive jaundice.

Background/aims: We aimed to search the effects of two different drugs in bacterial translocation, both in combination and alone: ursodeoxycholic acid, the effectiveness of which was evidenced previously, and ciprofloxacin, which had not been used before, in an experimental obstructive jaundiced rat model.

Methods: Fifty Wistar Albino rats were divided into five groups: sham group (A), control group (B), ciprofloxacin group (C), ursodeoxycholic acid group (D), and ciprofloxacin + ursodeoxycholic acid group (E). Except in Group A animals, the common bile ducts in all animals were ligated.

Tracheocele; a case of rare clinical entity.

Tracheocele is a herniation of the tracheal mucous membrane and it is rarely reported in the literature. It may be a congenital defect or an acquired lesion. Traumas, high pressure injuries, long lasting tracheostomy, obstructive tracheal diseases, recurrent infections of the mucous glands of the trachea with subsequent ductal obstruction and dilatation may play a role at the etiology.

Ergonomic problems encountered by the surgical team during video endoscopic surgery.

Background: The aim of this study is to analyze the problems related to the ergonomic conditions faced by video endoscopic surgical teams during video endoscopic surgery by means of a questionnaire.

Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 100 medical personnel, from 8 different disciplines, who performed video endoscopic surgeries. Participants were asked to answer 13 questions related to physical, perceptive, and cognitive problems.
