The sensitive Bisphenol A (BPA) detection by an electrochemical sensor based on gold nanoparticle-doped molecularly imprinted polymer was successfully improved. This study describes the development of a method for BPA detection in both aqueous solution and real water samples using N-methacroyl-(L)-cysteine methyl ester and N-methacryloyl-(L)-phenylalanine methyl ester coated pencil graphite electrodes modified with AuNPs by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Importantly, AuNPs, which increase the electroactivity, were used to increase the surface area of a BPA-imprinted pencil graphite electrode (MIP PGE) sensor.

Unlabelled: The Bland-White-Garland syndrome, or Anomalous Origin of the Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA) syndrome, is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly often associated with high mortality, if left untreated. We present a case of a 43-year-old female with undiagnosed ALCAPA who initially underwent mitral valve surgery for severe mitral regurgitation, only to require reoperation due to adult-type ALCAPA. Intraoperatively, the discovery of dilated right coronary artery and its branches and absence of the left coronary ostium prompted further investigation, leading to the diagnosis of adult-type ALCAPA.

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality, characterized by nonspecific symptoms and variable clinical presentations. Accurate risk stratification is essential for effective management. While conventional tools like the simplified pulmonary embolism severity index (sPESI) and imaging modalities are widely used, they are often costly and have limitations in predictive accuracy.

Hypercapnic respiratory failure (HRF) is a primary cause of admittance to the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aimed to investigate the factors that affect the length of hospital stay in HRF patients. This study was designed as a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of patients who were admitted to the ICU because of HRF between 2022 and 2024.

Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) approved for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis, is widely used, though real-world data on its application in asthma management remain limited. This registry-based study evaluated the use of montelukast in adult asthma patients, examining demographic and disease characteristics, asthma control status, asthma phenotypes, presence of atopy, and treatment regimens. Among 2053 patients analyzed, 61.

The prognostic value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in ischemic stroke remains debated due to cohort variability and treatment heterogeneity across studies. This study evaluates the relationship between admission NLR, stroke severity and 90-day outcomes in patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) undergoing early, successful revascularization. A retrospective multicenter study was conducted with 1082 patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke.

Thalamo-insular cortex connections in the rat and human.

Neurosci Lett

January 2025

Department of Anatomy, Koç University, School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

The insular cortex (ICx) has a role in large a variety of functions. Thalamus plays an important role in modulating cortical functions. The present study aims to show thalamic-ICx connections using the fluoro-gold (FG) tracing method in rats and diffusion tensoring-based tractography (DTI) in humans.

This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Introduction: End-stage kidney disease patients face a critical decision regarding kidney replacement therapy options, which include kidney transplantation, hemodialysis, or peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led education (NE) alone vs. NE combined with peer support on the patients' decision over PD treatment in chronic kidney disease patients.

Highly selective inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6is) have emerged as a standart of care for first- and second-line therapies in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. It has been reported that combination therapy is more effective than ET alone and is safe in elderly patients as well as young patients. Nevertheless, elderly and very old patients with HR+/HER2-MBC treated with CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) combinations are relatively underrepresented in randomized controlled trials.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of vitamin B complex and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) pre-treatments on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats, focusing on their potential to enhance antioxidant defense mechanisms and reduce post-ischemic liver damage. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: sham group (n = 10), IRI group (n = 10), vitamin B group (n = 10), vitamin B + ALA group (n = 10). In the IRI, vitamin B, and vitamin B + ALA groups, the rats underwent 45 min of hepatic ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion.

: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. Multiple genetic factors, environmental exposures, micro-aspirations secondary to gastroesophageal reflux, age, sex, smoking habit, and infections contribute to its etiology; consequently, its pathogenesis remains unclear. The homeostasis of gut microbiota, including bacteria, archaea, and fungi, can influence the functions of both the intestine and remote organs.

  • People are increasingly exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from mobile phones, raising concerns about potential health effects, particularly on reproduction.
  • A study tested the effects of EMR (4.5 GB; 2600 MHz) on rat ovaries by dividing 18 female rats into control, stand-by, and dialing groups over 8 weeks.
  • The results showed follicular degeneration and increased expression of specific proteins related to cell death (Caspase-3) and cell survival (Beclin-1) in the EMR-exposed groups, suggesting that mobile phone radiation can harm ovarian health.
