Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of antenatal corticosteroids (ANS) on male and female fetuses without anomalies, specifically regarding mortality and short-term health outcomes in infants born before 32 weeks of gestation.
  • In analyzing 210 preterm infants, the results revealed that male infants exposed to ANS had a lower mortality rate (11%) compared to females (23%), but no significant differences were found in other health issues like intraventricular hemorrhage or respiratory distress syndrome, except for a higher rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in males.
  • The research concluded that ANS does not influence mortality rates in female fetuses, suggesting future studies could explore personalized ANS treatment based on fetal sex.

Combination of Precut Techniques in Difficult Biliary Cannulation.

Euroasian J Hepatogastroenterol

January 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: Selective biliary cannulation (SBC) is a prerequisite for successful endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). SBC has the potential to fail in as many as 20% of cases, even with skilled endoscopists. Precut incision techniques like needle-knife sphincterotomy (NKS) and transpancreatic septotomy (TPS) can be used in cases where standard cannulation techniques fail.

From the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Chest Diseases, Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey, and.

Article Synopsis
  • Being stung by bees or wasps can lead to severe allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, and venom immunotherapy (VIT) is currently the most effective treatment option, though its long-term benefits and risks are not fully understood.
  • A study tracked 105 patients with venom allergies, comparing 68 who underwent VIT to 37 who didn’t; results showed that while only 5 patients who completed 5 years of VIT had re-stings without severe reactions, 70.3% of those who didn't receive VIT experienced severe reactions upon re-stinging.
  • The study indicated that VIT significantly reduces both the frequency and severity of re-sting reactions, especially for those who completed the full

Introduction: Procarbazine is an oral chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of brain malignancies and is associated with hypersensitivity reactions. In case of grade 4 reactions, rechallenge should be avoided, and the agent should be replaced, unless the treatment is curative, in which case the application of a desensitization protocol should be considered. We present a successful case of desensitization in procarbazine anaphylaxis.

Purpose: It has been suggested that the cause of the balance disorder seen in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) originates from the central nervous system. However, the extent of the balance problem and the dysfunction of which part of the central nervous system has not been investigated in detail. This study aimed to correlate the values obtained by balance analysis and cerebellum volume measurement in female individuals with AIS with healthy individuals.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine if choroidal vascularity index (CVI) is different in eyes with unilateral vitreomacular traction (VMT) from their healthy fellow eyes; and whether different treatments affect the CVI.

Methods: The baseline and 8-week post treatment CVIs of 56 unilateral VMT patients that underwent spontaneous resolution (n = 30), vitreoretinal surgery (n = 16) or pneumatic vitreolysis (n = 10) were compared with fellow eyes using paired samples t-test. Partial correlation analyses correcting age and gender was used for calculations between treatment groups.

Predictive factors of recurrence after omalizumab cessation in the elderly with urticaria: A real-life study.

Allergy Asthma Proc

November 2022

From the Division of Immunology and Allergic Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

There are no well-defined data that help predict the recurrence risk of urticaria after omalizumab cessation in elderly patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of omalizumab and to determine the possible predictive factors for recurrence after omalizumab cessation in the elderly with CSU. A total of 193 patients with CSU treated with omalizumab were included and divided into two groups according to age: group 1, ages 18-64 years ( = 127), and group 2, ages ≥ 65 years ( = 66).

Liver fibrosis is the most important factor in the prognosis and treatment plan of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis index based on 4 factors (FIB-4), and fibrosis index based on 5 factors (FIB-5) scores are noninvasive fibrosis markers, and previous comparative studies have shown that they are as effective as liver biopsy in detecting liver fibrosis in different liver diseases. The aim of our study is to investigate whether existing scoring systems are effective in demonstrating fibrosis in CHB patients and to compare the APRI, FIB 4, and FIB 5 scores in differentiating early and advanced fibrosis in 123 patients who underwent liver biopsy for CHB infection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess dynamic visual acuity (DVA) in migraine patients and explore its link to self-motion sensitivity and visually induced migraine symptoms.
  • Researchers compared the DVA test results of 20 migraine patients with 20 control subjects during head movements, finding that migraine patients had significantly poorer DVA scores in four tested directions.
  • The findings suggest that the abnormal DVA scores in migraine patients are related to their heightened sensitivity to head motion and visual stimuli, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms of migraine-related symptoms.
