We investigated oxidative status in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT) and evaluated their relationship with radiological and clinical parameters. In this cross-section study, 88 patients with RCT (59 males and 29 females) and 86 healthy controls (66 males, 20 females) were enrolled. The sample consisted of nontraumatic patients who are suffering from shoulder pain because of rotator cuff disease, which was established by clinical tests and MRI scanning.

Background: The main complications seen in patients who have undergone modified radical mastectomy (MRM) are seroma, surgical site infection, hematoma, wound dehiscence, flap necrosis, and nerve damage. While these complications lead to some problems the most feared effect in the early period is that they cause a delay in adjuvant treatment. Incisional Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (iNPWT) decreases wound dehiscence by reducing oedema and tension, especially in the incision line.

Comparison of laparoscopy and vNOTES in early-stage endometrial cancer.

J Obstet Gynaecol Res

September 2024

Kartal Lütfi Kırdar City Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Health Sciences Turkey, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare outcomes between vNOTES (vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery) and conventional laparoscopy for early-stage endometrial cancer, focusing on demographics, clinical results, and recovery.
  • Conducted retrospectively at a tertiary hospital from January 2019 to November 2020, the study included 45 patients, with 16 undergoing traditional laparoscopy and 29 receiving vNOTES, assessing various factors such as pain scores and postoperative complications.
  • Results indicated that vNOTES led to significantly lower pain scores and less need for opioid analgesics post-surgery, suggesting it might be a safer and more effective option for early-stage endometrial cancer compared to conventional lap

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) on patients with oligometastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) and its impact on survival and local control rates.
  • A total of 388 patients with up to 5 metastatic lesions were analyzed, showing that most had previously undergone surgery and had limited organ involvement, with median follow-up of about 30.7 months.
  • Results indicated that higher SBRT doses (≥100 Gy) significantly improved local control, progression-free survival, and overall survival rates, highlighting SBRT as a promising treatment for metastatic CRC.

Comparison of a coronary bypass surgery using a combination of both on-pump beating heart and cardioplegic arrest with conventional coronary bypass surgery using cardioplegic arrest on-pump.

Indian J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

September 2024

Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Alife Hospital, Citipiti sokak No=6Angoraevleri Çayyolu/Cankaya, Ankara, 06810 Turkey.

Objective: Antegrade cardioplegia may cause maldistribution in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. Surgically bypassing large epicardial vessels before the cross-clamp and then administering cardioplegia from both the aortic root and the anastomosed grafts significantly prevent maldistribution and provide better cardiac protection.

Methods: This study included 80 patients, all older than 70 years with an ejection fraction between 25 and 35%.

Background: Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by Echinocccus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis and declared a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization. The disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in India, Australia, China, Turkey, South America, the Middle East, and Eastern European countries. Bibliometric analysis is a popular research trend that gains the advantage of evaluating all the studies about one specific topic and emphasizing the importance and place of the subject in the literature.

  • In a study of 82 patients with autoimmune liver diseases (AILD), researchers aimed to evaluate the frequency of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) among them.
  • They found that 18% of the patients had immunodeficiency, with the highest ratio observed in the variant syndromes group at 29%.
  • The study highlights the need for targeted therapies for AILD patients with IEI and calls for further research to better understand the impacts of these treatments.

  • This study investigates out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data in Türkiye, focusing on prognostic outcomes and influencing factors for patients aged 18 and older who were treated at 28 medical centers.
  • It found a survival rate upon hospital discharge of only 4.4%, with a significant majority of patients not receiving bystander CPR, which was only performed in 2.9% of cases.
  • Key predictors for better outcomes included male gender, initial shockable heart rhythms, shorter prehospital CPR duration, and no need for CPR in the emergency department, highlighting the importance of timely and effective CPR in emergencies.

Rev Esp Med Nucl Imagen Mol (Engl Ed)

November 2024

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to research the value of the texture analysis of primary tumors in pre-treatment [68Ga]Ga-PSMA PET in the prediction of the development of biochemical recurrence (BCR) in prostate cancer patients who underwent definitive therapies.

Methods: 51 patients with prostate adenocarcinoma who had a pre-treatment [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT and underwent definitive radiotherapy (RT) or radical prostatectomy (RP) were included in the study. Demographics, clinicopathologic features, the presence of BCR, and the last follow-up date of patients were recorded.

Article Synopsis
  • Current estimates of genetic variants linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) show limitations and biases across different populations, complicating patient recruitment for clinical trials focused on genetic therapies.
  • The Rostock Parkinson's disease (ROPAD) study analyzes data from 12,580 PD patients across 16 countries, revealing that 14.8% had a genetic test positive for PD-related variants, particularly in specific genes like GBA1 and LRRK2.
  • Findings indicate higher positivity rates in patients with earlier onset (age ≤ 50) or a positive family history, emphasizing the need for more extensive genetic investigation to improve patient stratification for future clinical trials.

  • The study compares threaded acetabular components (TACs) and press-fit acetabular components (PFACs) in total hip arthroplasty (THA), highlighting TACs' greater initial stability but ongoing use of PFACs despite advantages.
  • It involved a thorough analysis of seven studies with nearly 15,000 cases, examining revision rates due to aseptic loosening and radiological outcomes between the two types of components.
  • Findings suggested that PFACs had a higher odds ratio for revisions, especially in females, though some results did not reach statistical significance, indicating that while TACs might be better, further research is necessary for conclusive evidence.
