Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how soil microbiomes (like bacteria, archaea, and fungi) react to the presence of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in contaminated farmland versus undisturbed forestland in a mining area in Chizhou, China, using high-throughput sequencing methods.
  • - Findings show that both As and Sb were mostly in residual forms in the soil, while soil bacterial diversity actually increased in contaminated areas, contrasting with the responses of archaea and fungi.
  • - The research suggests that the microbial communities adapt through determined processes to the As-Sb contamination, revealing insights that could help in developing effective bioremediation and management strategies for mine tailings.

Article Synopsis
  • * Research in a subalpine peatland found that peak methane production occurred in a 10- to 15-cm peat layer, while the highest methane oxidation happened in the top 0-5 cm layer, suggesting distinct microbial community dynamics at different depths.
  • * The study highlighted that water table levels significantly shape the composition of methane-related microbial communities, emphasizing that mosses play a key role in reducing methane emissions in peatland ecosystems, which is crucial for mitigating greenhouse gas

Prevention of cholesterol gallstone disease by schaftoside in lithogenic diet-induced C57BL/6 mouse model.

Eur J Pharmacol

November 2017

Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Jichang Road 12, Guangzhou 510405, Guangdong Province, PR China.

Schaftoside (SS) is a bioactive compound present in the Herba Desmodii Styracifolii (DS), a herb that has been used to treat cholelithiasis and urolithiasis in Chinese medicine. Whether SS inhibits cholesterol (Ch) gallstone formation has not been investigated. This study examined the effects of oral intake of SS on Ch gallstone formation in C57BL/6 mice fed a lithogenic diet.

Preparation and Characterization of Mo Doped in BiVO₄ with Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties.

Materials (Basel)

August 2017

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Environmental Materials and Remediation Technology, Research Institute for New Materials Technology, Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences, Yongchuan, Chongqing 402160, China.

Molybdenum (Mo) doped BiVO₄ was fabricated via a simple electrospun method. Morphology, structure, chemical states and optical properties of the obtained catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET) and photoluminescence spectrum (PL), respectively. The photocatalytic properties indicate that doping Mo into BiVO₄ can enhance the photocatalytic activity and dark adsorption ability.
