Article Synopsis
  • Guidelines recommend using specific thyroid hormone reference intervals during pregnancy, but these are often not available, leading to alternative diagnostic methods.
  • A study analyzed data from over 52,000 women and found that these alternative methods had low sensitivity (0.63-0.82) and high false discovery rates (0.11-0.35) compared to trimester-specific reference intervals.
  • The results indicate that using alternative approaches for thyroid hormone testing in pregnancy can result in significant misdiagnosis, highlighting the need for better strategies for detecting thyroid dysfunction in pregnant women.

Exposure to preadult environmental exposures may have long-lasting effects on mental health by affecting the maturation of the brain and personality, two traits that interact throughout the developmental process. However, environment-brain-personality covariation patterns and their mediation relationships remain unclear. In 4297 healthy participants (aged 18-30 years), we combined sparse multiple canonical correlation analysis with independent component analysis to identify the three-way covariation patterns of 59 preadult environmental exposures, 760 adult brain imaging phenotypes, and five personality traits, and found two robust environment-brain-personality covariation models with sex specificity.

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of omalizumab in the treatment of moderate or severe allergic asthma in children with serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels >1 500 IU/mL.

Methods: A total of 95 children with moderate or severe allergic asthma, who were treated at the Department of Respiratory Medicine in Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital from December 2020 to May 2022, were enrolled. Based on their serum total IgE levels and whether they received omalizumab treatment, they were divided into a control group (IgE >1 500 IU/mL, no omalizumab treatment), a normal treatment group (IgE levels between 30 and 1 500 IU/mL, omalizumab treatment), and an ultra-high IgE treatment group (IgE >1 500 IU/mL, omalizumab treatment).

  • Cholangitis is a common complication in patients who have undergone Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) for biliary atresia, and timely treatment with antibiotics is critical due to uncertain bacterial infection.
  • This study included a multicenter, randomized trial where patients with different severities of cholangitis were treated with various combinations of antibiotics, focusing primarily on the effectiveness of cefoperazone sodium tazobactam sodium (CSTS) and meropenem (MEPM).
  • Results showed no significant differences in outcomes like fever duration or liver function recovery between CSTS and MEPM in mild cases, but severe cases benefitted from MEPM combined with immunoglobulin (IVIG), reducing fever duration and improving

Background: The double-J stent (DJS) is a commonly used ureteral stent in urological surgeries, which provides support and drainage. However, the DJS may result in various complications such as infection, hematuria, stone formation, stent occlusion, and migration. Normally, one end of the DJS is located in the renal pelvis, and the other end in the bladder.

Background: Even though intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a current treatment for Kawasaki disease (KD), 10-20% of patients require additional therapy. This study seeks to investigate the therapeutic effects of glucocorticoids plus IVIG on KD and to ascertain the subsequent effect on platelet activation during the acute phase.

Methods: A total of 32 children with KD were randomly classified into two groups: the experimental group (16 cases) and the control group (16 cases).

Elbow fracture is one of the most common fractures in preschool children, and the secondary ossification center appears regularly with age increasing. Transphyseal separation of the distal humerus, medial humeral condyle fracture, lateral humeral condyle fracture, radial head osteochondral separation, and Monteggia fracture (minimal ulnar bow type) are difficult to diagnose based on X-ray films alone because of the unossified secondary ossification center or a suspicious non-alignment of the anatomical cartilage of the elbow joint in preschool children. These 5 fractures above are defined as The Radiographic Appearance Seemed Harmless fractures in preschool children (TRASH-PS).

Metabolic characteristics and pathogenesis of precocious puberty in girls: the role of perfluorinated compounds.

BMC Med

August 2023

Department of Electronic Science, Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Plasma and Magnetic Resonance, Xiamen University, Siming District, 422 Siming South Road, Xiamen, 361005, Fujian, China.

Background: Precocious puberty (PP) in girls is traditionally defined as the onset of breast development before the age of 8 years. The specific biomarkers of premature thelarche (PT) and central precocious puberty (CPP) girls are uncertain, and little is known about their metabolic characteristics driven by perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and clinical phenotype. This study aimed to screen specific biomarkers of PT and CPP and elucidate their underlying pathogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) includes serious liver conditions such as steatohepatitis and cirrhosis, but currently lacks approved treatments.
  • HIF-1α plays a key role in the development of MAFLD, and the CO-releasing molecule SMA/CORM2 has shown anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing HIF-1α.
  • In mouse studies, SMA/CORM2 treatment improved liver health by increasing CO levels, reducing HIF-1α expression, and providing protective effects against MAFLD-related complications.

Early hearing loss could cause abnormal brain development, which has been linked to the complex process known as cross-modal neuroplasticity. However, previous studies investigating the brain structure of infants with congenital severe sensorineural hearing loss (CSSHL) are scarce and have yielded inconsistent results. This study aimed to further explore the gray matter (GM) density changes in children with CSSHL.
