April 2024

Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Beijing, China; Department for Women's Health, University Women's Hospital and Research Center for Women's Health, University of Tuebingen, Tuebingen, Germany.

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) refers to the decline of ovarian function before the age of 40. POI causes a reduction in or loss of female fertility, accompanied by different degrees of menopausal symptoms, which increases the risk of chronic diseases related to early menopause and seriously affects patients' quality of life and health. It is conservatively estimated that at least one million prepubertal girls and women of reproductive age in China are at risk of iatrogenic POI caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy every year.

Objective: Cardiac surgery in Congenital Heart Disease-Heterotaxy (CHD-HTX) patients often leads to increased postoperative airway complications. Abnormal respiratory ciliary function, resembling primary ciliary dyskinesia, has been observed. We expanded the sample size by retrospectively reviewing Ciliary Dysfunction (CD) in CHD-HTX patients to verify the increased risk of post-surgical respiratory complications.

Electronic address:

Umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) has been rarely reported as a first-line treatment for idiopathic severe aplastic anemia (SAA) patients lacking HLA-matched sibling donors (MSD). Our study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of pediatric SAA patients who received UCBT and immunosuppressive therapy (IST) upfront. A retrospective analysis was performed on 43 consecutive patients who received frontline IST (n = 17) or UCBT (n = 26) between July 2017 and April 2022.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and serious organ dysfunction in critically ill children. Early identification and prediction of AKI are of great significance. However, current AKI criteria are insufficiently sensitive and specific, and AKI heterogeneity limits the clinical value of AKI biomarkers.

Causal effect of age first had sexual intercourse and lifetime number of sexual partners on cervical cancer.

January 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Fudan University Anhui Hospital, Children's Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui, 230051, China.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether age first had sexual intercourse (AFSI) and lifetime number of sexual partners (LNSP) have a direct causal effect on cervical cancer by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Methods: Four approaches were used for MR Analysis, including MR-Egger, weighted method, weighted median, and inverse variance weighted (IVW). MR Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) as well as MR-Egger regression analysis were conducted to detect whether there was pleiotropy between IVs and outcome, and the outlier SNPs can be detected by MR-PRESSO.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at new ways to test for neuroblastoma (a type of cancer) using certain genes known as NB5 to see if they can help doctors predict how the disease behaves.
  • Researchers collected samples from patients and tested them using a special method called RT-PCR to see how well the NB5 genes were expressed.
  • The results showed that testing bone marrow samples was more accurate in finding the cancer compared to another method called flow cytometry, which helps doctors understand how the disease might progress.

Article Synopsis
  • The TORCHLIGHT trial tested the combination of the immune-checkpoint inhibitor toripalimab and nab-paclitaxel (nab-P) against a placebo with nab-P in patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).
  • Results showed that the toripalimab group had a significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) of 8.4 months compared to 5.6 months for the placebo group, particularly in PD-L1-positive patients.
  • The overall survival was also better for the toripalimab group (32.8 months vs. 19.5 months), and the safety profile was similar between groups, suggesting that toripalimab is a promising treatment for this cancer type.

Increased cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase drives neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease.

Transl Neurodegener

January 2024

Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Diseases, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, 230027, China.

Background: Microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is not only a response to pathophysiological events, but also plays a causative role in neurodegeneration. Cytoplasmic cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase (CARS) is considered to be a stimulant for immune responses to diseases; however, it remains unknown whether CARS is involved in the pathogenesis of AD.

Methods: Postmortem human temporal cortical tissues at different Braak stages and AD patient-derived serum samples were used to investigate the changes of CARS levels in AD by immunocytochemical staining, real-time PCR, western blotting and ELISA.

Mic19 depletion impairs endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondrial contacts and mitochondrial lipid metabolism and triggers liver disease.

Nat Commun

January 2024

College of Life Sciences, TaiKang Center for Life and Medical Sciences, Frontier Science Center for Immunology and Metabolism, Department of Anesthesiology, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan University, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-mitochondria contacts are critical for the regulation of lipid transport, synthesis, and metabolism. However, the molecular mechanism and physiological function of endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondrial contacts remain unclear. Here, we show that Mic19, a key subunit of MICOS (mitochondrial contact site and cristae organizing system) complex, regulates ER-mitochondria contacts by the EMC2-SLC25A46-Mic19 axis.

Deletion of mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor delays and damages the development of white pulp in spleen.

Immunobiology

January 2024

School of Basic Medical Sciences, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China; Biopharmaceutical Institute, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China. Electronic address:

Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced protein, and it has been reported that ER stress and unfolded protein response (UPR) are closely related to the immune system. The spleen is an important immune organ and we have shown in our previous research that MANF is expressed in human spleen tissues. However, there have been limited studies about the effect of MANF on spleen development.

Background: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI)are known to be diagnosed late or inaccurately. This has fueled the unscrupulous use of antibiotics, as they are often used empirically and clinically, leading to antibiotic abuse and multidrug resistance in patients. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), now widely used in clinical studies, could be a potential intervention to revolutionize microbiology by rapidly identifying unknown species.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the early clinical features of coronary artery lesion (CAL) in Kawasaki disease (KD), evaluate systemic inflammation indicators, and enhance early recognition of CAL in the acute phase of KD. A total of 314 children with KD were divided into those with CAL (CAL group) and without CAL (NCAL group) using echocardiographic results, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. For KD patients, male, children aged 3 to 9 years, and those with fever longer than 6 days before intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) use were more likely to have CAL.
