To achieve rapid and sensitive detection of the toxicity of pollutants in the aquatic environment, a photosynthetic inhibition method with microalgae as the test organism and photosynthetic fluorescence parameters as the test endpoint was proposed. In this study, eight environmental pollutants were selected to act on the tested organism, , including herbicides (diuron, atrazine), fungicides (fuberidazole), organic chemical raw materials (phenanthrene, phenol, p-benzoquinone), disinfectants (trichloroacetonitrile uric acid), and disinfection by-products (trichloroacetonitrile). The results showed that, in addition to specific PSII inhibitors (diuretic and atrazine), other types of pollutants could also quickly affect the photosynthetic system.

Seeking a facile approach to directly assemble bridged metal oxide nanowires on substrates with predefined electrodes without the need for complex postsynthesis alignment and/or device procedures will bridge the gap between fundamental research and practical applications for diverse biochemical sensing, electronic, optoelectronic, and energy storage devices. Herein, regularly bridged CuO microhemisphere nanowire arrays (RB-MNAs) are rationally designed on indium tin oxide electrodes via thermal oxidation of ordered Cu microhemisphere arrays obtained by solid-state dewetting of patterned Ag/Cu/Ag films. Both the position and spacing of CuO microhemisphere nanowires can be well controlled by as-used shadow mask and the thickness of Cu film, which allows homogeneous manipulation of the bridging of adjacent nanowires grown from neighboring CuO hemispheres, and thus benefits highly sensitive trimethylamine (TMA) sensors and broad band (UV-visible to infrared) photodetectors.

Satellite remote sensing is an important technique providing long-term and large-scale information of formaldehyde (HCHO), which plays a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry. Low signal-to-noise ratio and poor stability of the Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI) On board Gaofen-5 satellite, the first Chinese space-borne spectrometer, make HCHO retrieval extremely difficult. Here we firstly retrieved HCHO vertical column densities (VCDs) from EMI through in-flight spectral calibration, retrieval setting optimization and stripe correction.

A continuous wintertime observation of ambient OH and HO radicals was first carried out in Shanghai, in 2019. This effort coincided with the second China International Import Expo (CIIE), during which strict emission controls were implemented in Shanghai, resulting in an average PM concentration of less than 35 μg/m. The self-developed instrument based on the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique reported that the average OH radical concentration at noontime (11:00-13:00) was 2.

We developed a cavity ringdown spectrometer by utilizing a step-scanning and dithering method for matching laser wavelengths to optical resonances of an optical cavity. Our approach is capable of working with two and more lasers for quasi-simultaneous measurements of multiple gas species. The developed system was tested with two lasers operating around 1654 nm and 1658 nm for spectral detections of CH and its isotope CH in air, respectively.

We present a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp-based photoionization time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer coupled with a capillary inlet and an aerodynamic lens to online analyze the chemical compositions of the gas- and particulate-phase of cigarette smoke of a heated tobacco product (HTP). Both phase compositions of the fresh cigarette smoke, without dilution and pretreatment, are softly photoionized and their mass spectra are measured with a time resolution of 1 s. It is shown that the gas-phase compositions with low mass are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the particulate-phase compositions are also clearly identified and cover the full mass range of the mass spectrometer.

Discriminating structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules, such as benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers (BTX), remains a significant challenge, especially, for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, in which selectivity is a long-standing challenge. Recent progress indicates that temperature modulation of a single MOS sensor offers a powerful route in extracting the features of adsorbed gas analytes than conventional isothermal operation. Herein, a rectangular heating waveform is applied on NiO-, WO-, and SnO-based sensors to gradually activate the specific gas/oxide interfacial redox reaction and generate rich (electrical) features of adsorbed BTX molecules.

Research on carbon dioxide (CO) geological and biogeochemical cycles in the ocean is important to support the geoscience study. Continuous in-situ measurement of dissolved CO is critically needed. However, the time and spatial resolution are being restricted due to the challenges of very high submarine pressure and quite low efficiency in water-gas separation, which, therefore, are emerging the main barriers to deep sea investigation.

The pressure- and temperature-dependent luminescence properties of M'-phase Nd:YTaO synthesized by a molten salt method are presented. Ten near-infrared emission lines originating from the transitions between the two Stark levels R of the F state and the five Stark levels Z of the I state for the doped Nd ions can be clearly identified. All these emission lines are found to shift linearly with pressure in a range up to ∼11 GPa.

We study the conformers of the ethyl peroxy radical (CHO), the simplest peroxy radical having more than one conformer, by combining synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry with theoretical calculations. The ethyl peroxy radical is formed in a microwave discharge flow tube through the reaction of the ethyl radical (CH) with oxygen molecules, where CH is generated the hydrogen-abstraction reaction of ethane with fluorine atoms. Two kinds of CH, originating from photoionization of CH and from dissociative photoionization of CHO, whose cation is not stable, have been identified and separated in photoionization mass spectra.

Sulfur dioxide (SO) measured by satellites is widely used to estimate anthropogenic emissions. The Sentinel-5 Precursor (S-5P) operational SO product is overestimated compared to the ground-based multiaxis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurements in China and shows an opposite variation to the surface measurements, which limits the application of TROPOspheric monitoring instrument (TROPOMI) products in emissions research. Radiometric calibration, a priori profiles, and fitting windows might cause the overestimation of S-5P operational SO product.

Neutrophil dysfunction is closely related to the pathophysiology of patients with diabetes mellitus, but existing immunoassays are difficult to implement in clinical applications, and neutrophil's chemotaxis as a functional biomarker for diabetes mellitus prognostic remains largely unexplored. Herein, a novel microfluidic device consisted of four independent test units with four cell docking structures was developed to study the neutrophil chemotaxis, which allowed multiple cell migration observations under a single field of view (FOV) and guaranteed more reliable results. In vitro studies, the chemotaxis of healthy neutrophils to -Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP) gradient (0, 10, 100, and 1000 nM) was concentration-dependent.

Mobile sensing based on the integration of microfluidic devices and smartphones, so-called MS2 technology, has enabled many applications over recent years and continues to stimulate growing interest in both research communities and industries. In particular, MS2 technology has been proven to be able to be applied to molecular diagnostic analysis and can be implemented for basic research and clinical testing. However, the currently reported MS2-based nucleic acid analysis system has limited use in practical applications, because it is not integrated with quantitative PCR, multiplex PCR, and isothermal amplification functions, and lacks temperature control, image acquisition and real-time processing units with excellent performance.
