Background: 15-Lipoxygenase-1 (15-LOX-1) belongs to the lipoxygenase family involved in the inflammatory response and pathological process of various diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA). The overexpression of TGF-β1 in osteoblasts leads to abnormal changes in subchondral bone structure, eventually causing OA. However, the pathogenesis of the disease is poorly defined, and the interaction between 15-LOX-1 and TGF-β1 in osteoblasts has not been evaluated in OA.

Aims: 15-lipoxygenase-1 (15-LOX-1) plays a vital role in aggravating the inflammatory response in various pathological processes, including osteoarthritis (OA). Abnormal osteoblast phenotypes including elevated runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), collagen type 1 alpha 1 (COL1), and osteocalcin (OCN) lead to osteosclerosis of the subchondral bone, which eventually causes OA. However, the pathogenesis of OA is poorly defined, and it is unclear if 15-LOX-1 induces osteoblast abnormal phenotypes in OA.

Department of Physiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, 230032, China.

Adult-onset hypothyroidism induces cognitive impairments in learning and memory. Thyroxin (T4) replacement therapy appears to be effective in biochemically restoring euthyroidism, as evidenced by serum T4 and triiodothyronine concentrations within the normal range, although some the patients still exhibit cognitive dysfunctions. Here, we investigated the cognitive functions of propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroid mice in C57BL/6j and 129/Sv strains using the passive avoidance task and the novel object recognition test.

Eosinophil asthma is characterized by the infiltration of eosinophils to the bronchial epithelium. The toxic cationic protein released by eosinophils, mainly major basic protein (MBP), is one of the most important causative factors of epithelium damage. Poly-L-Arginine (PLA) is a kind of synthetic cationic polypeptides, which is widely used to mimic the effects of MBP on epithelial cells in vitro.

NLRC5 negatively regulates LTA-induced inflammation via TLR2/NF-κB and participates in TLR2-mediated allergic airway inflammation.

J Cell Physiol

November 2019

Department of Geriatric Respiratory and Critical Care, Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Medicine for Geriatric Disease, Anhui Geriatric Institute, The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui, China.

NLRC5, the largest member of the Nod-like receptor (NLR) family, has been reported to play a pivotal role in regulating inflammatory responses. Recent evidence suggests that NLRC5 participates in Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathways and negatively modulates nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. In this study, we investigated the interaction between NLRC5 and TLR2 in the NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway and the involvement of NLRC5 in TLR2-mediated allergic airway inflammation.

Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation, which is the underlying cause of airway remodeling featured by goblet cell hyperplasia, subepithelial fibrosis, and proliferation of smooth muscle. Sevoflurane has been used to treat life-threatening asthma and our previous study shows that sevoflurane inhibits acute lung inflammation in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic mice. However, the effect of sevoflurane on airway remodeling in the context of chronic airway inflammation and the underlying mechanism are still unknown.

Background: Plasma levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are elevated in subjects with COPD, and high plasma NT-proBNP levels are correlated with a poor prognosis. Thus, it is crucial to decrease the plasma NT-proBNP levels at the early stage of disease. We aimed to assess the effects of short-term treatment of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide on plasma NT-proBNP levels and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in subjects with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD).

Estrogen has been suggested to play a protective role against airway inflammations, such as asthma. In these processes, the inflammasome nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) partly accounts for the activation of pro-inflammatory factors. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether NLRP3 was involved in the protective effect of estrogen against allergic airway inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activates the inflammatory response in macrophages via the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway, but excessive cytokine production can cause tissue damage.
  • The study investigates the role of Mer receptor tyrosine kinase (MerTK) in regulating LPS-induced inflammation and macrophage phagocytosis of E. coli.
  • Findings suggest that MerTK downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production through suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) without influencing the ability of macrophages to engulf E. coli.
