Activation of cholinergic basal forebrain neurons improved cognitive functions in adult-onset hypothyroid mice.

Biomed Pharmacother

September 2022

Department of Physiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui 230032, China. Electronic address:

Cognitive dysfunction is common in hypothyroid patients, even after undergoing sufficient levothyroxine (LT4) replacement therapy for euthyroid. Our previous studies indicated that cholinergic neurons might contribute to the decline of cognition in adult-onset hypothyroidism. Nevertheless, the role of the cellular and neural control of basal forebrain (BF) cholinergic neurons in hypothyroidism-induced cognitive impairments is unknown.

Excellent response of lung adenocarcinoma harboring a rare SLC8A1 downstream intergenic region ALK fusion to ceritinib treatment: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

August 2022

Department of Geriatric Respiratory and Critical Care, Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Medicine for Geriatric Disease, Anhui Geriatric Institute, the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui, China.

Rationale: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene fusion, an important driver gene alteration leading to the development of lung cancer, occurs in 5% of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases in China. In addition to echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4)-ALK, which is the most common type of ALK fusion, various fusion partner genes have been identified in recent years. However, ALK intergenic breakpoint fusions confound fusion detection and targeted treatment.

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, 230022 Hefei, Anhui, China; Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease Research and Medical Transformation of Anhui Province, The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, 230022 Hefei, Anhui, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) involve severe inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to lung damage and reduced survival rates.
  • The study investigates whether melatonin can protect against ALI caused by LPS by activating a specific signaling pathway (Nrf2/HO-1) and reducing a process called pyroptosis in both animal models and human cell lines.
  • Results showed that melatonin treatment not only improved lung health but also inhibited harmful molecules and inflammatory responses linked to ALI, suggesting its potential as a protective agent against this condition.

Participation of Increased Circulating MAIT Cells in Lung Cancer: a Pilot Study.

J Cancer

March 2022

Department of Geriatric Respiratory and Critical Care, Anhui Geriatric Institute, the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui, China.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are a subset of innate-like T cells that regulate the immune response via rapidly releasing inflammatory factors, including during progression of some tumors. However, the immunological role of MAIT cells is still unclear in lung cancer. We measured percentage, partial function, and clinical correlation of circulating MAIT cells from lung cancer patients through flow cytometry.

NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) is an important source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and its expression is increased in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated lung epithelial cells. Polymerase -interacting protein 2 (Poldip2) has been proved to bind Nox4 and participates in oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the role of Poldip2/Nox4 in LPS-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in lung epithelial cells remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • 517 NSCLC patients were analyzed for multiple gene mutations, revealing significant differences in D-dimer levels and other factors across different mutation groups (wild-type, single, and concomitant).
  • D-dimer was identified as a risk factor for concomitant mutations and showed high predictive accuracy, with patients in the concomitant mutation group having shorter progression-free survival compared to those with single mutations.

Effect of Restricted Feeding on Metabolic Health and Sleep-Wake Rhythms in Aging Mice.

Front Neurosci

September 2021

Department of Physiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China.

Aging, an irreversible and unavoidable physiological process in all organisms, is often accompanied by obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders, and fatigue. Thus, older adults are more likely to experience metabolic symptoms and sleep disturbances than are younger adults. Restricted feeding (RF) is a dietary regimen aimed at improving metabolic health and extending longevity, as well as reorganizing sleep-wake cycles.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of polylactic acid (PLA) template puncture route planning by comparing preoperative and postoperative dosimetry using computerized tomography (CT)-guided implantation of I radioactive seeds.

Methods: A total of 28 patients who underwent I seed implantation between January 2018 and June 2019 were selected for the statistical study of seed dosimetry. All patients received preoperative treatment planning system (TPS) planning, of which 13 patients in the experimental 3D template group underwent intraoperative puncture and implantation using the PLA template planning route.

Angiogenesis is a key characteristic of asthma airway remodeling. By releasing cationic granule proteins, such as major basic protein (MBP), activated eosinophils play a prominent role in asthma, but the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. In this study, we demonstrated that fibroblast growth factor-binding protein 1 (FGFBP1) was dramatically upregulated in airway epithelial cell lines treated by poly-L-arginine (PLA), a mimic of MBP.

Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is suggested to initiate the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, and considered to be involved in asthma. The findings that melatonin modulates TLRs-mediated immune responses, together with the suppressing effect of TLRs on endogenous melatonin synthesis, support the possibility that a feedback loop exists between TLRs system and endogenous melatonin synthesis. To determine whether TLR2-melatonin feedback loop exists in allergic airway disease and regulates NLRP3 inflammasome activity, wild-type (WT) and TLR2 mice were challenged with OVA to establish allergic airway disease model.
