Antimicrobial resistance of existing antibacterial agents has become a pressing issue for human health and demands effective antimicrobials beyond conventional antibacterial mechanisms. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest for this purpose. However, obtaining a high yield of 2D nanomaterials with a designed morphology for effective antibacterial activity remains exceptionally challenging.

(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the primary active ingredient in green tea and has been used for cancer prevention in clinical trials. The anti-tumor effects of EGCG stem from its ability to inhibit the activities of many oncoproteins, such as AKT, VEGFR, STAT3, and mutant p53. However, the clinical efficacy of EGCG is unsatisfactory.

Here, we report a label-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method for the rapid and accurate identification of methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) based on aptamer-guided AgNP enhancement and convolutional neural network (CNN) classification. Sixty clinical isolates of (), comprising 30 strains of MSSA and 30 strains of MRSA were used to build the CNN classification model. The developed method exhibited 100% identification accuracy for MSSA and MRSA, and is thus a promising tool for the rapid detection of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant bacterial strains.

Jiangsu Provincial Key Lab for the Chemistry and Utilization of Agro-Forest Biomass, College of Chemical Engineering, Nanjing Forestry University Nanjing 210037 China

Furfural is a promising renewable platform molecule derived from hemi-cellulose, which can be further converted to fossil fuel alternatives and valuable chemicals due to its highly functionalized molecular structure. This mini-review summarizes the recent progress in the chemo-catalytic and/or bio-catalytic conversion of furfural into high-value-added chemicals, including furfurylamine, C carboxylic acid, , furandicarboxylic acid, furfural alcohol, aromatics, levulinic acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, furoic acid, and cyclopentanone, particularly the advances in the catalytic valorization of furfural into useful chemicals in the last few years. The possible reaction mechanisms for the conversion of furfural into bio-chemicals are summarized and discussed.

This paper reports a colorimetric-fluorescent dual-signal lateral flow assay (LFA) based on vancomycin (Van)-modified SiO-Au-QD tags for sensitive and quantitative detection of (). The combination of high-performance Van-tags and detection antibodies integrated into the LFA system produced assays with high sensitivity and specificity. The visualization limit of the colorimetric signal and the detection limit of the fluorescence signal of the proposed method for can reach 10 and 100 cells mL, respectively.

In this work, we reported a highly rapid and non-enzymatic method for cholesterol measuring based on carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) as fluorescent nanoprobes, which were synthesized through chemical oxidation. The obtained CNQDs displayed high quantum yield up to 35% as well as excellent photostability, water solubility and low toxicity. We found that the fluorescence of CNQDs could be quenched more than 90% within 30 seconds by cholesterol through the formation of hydrogen bonds between -NH, -NH on the surface of CNQDs and cholesterol containing -OH.

Effective wound healing has been demonstrated using lactic--glycolic acid (PLGA)-coated methylene blue nanoparticles (MPNPs) as a novel susceptible agent for photodynamic antibacterial therapy. Compared with methylene blue (MB) solution, MPNPs have a significantly improved antibacterial effect and . The enhanced antibacterial effect is achieved through increased singlet oxygen generation in MPNPs compared to that of MB solution, as a result of the decreased aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) effect of the MPNPs.

Large-ring cyclodextrins LR-CDs (CD-CD) were obtained from rice starch using cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase), and were used as a wall material for embedding α-tocopherol. Complexes of α-tocopherol and LR-CDs were prepared by co-precipitation. A molar ratio of α-tocopherol/LR-CD of 1 : 2 showed the highest encapsulation efficiency.

Functional group transfer reactions are an important synthetic tool in modern organic synthesis. Herein, we developed a new palladium-catalyzed intermolecular transthioetherification reaction of aryl halides with thioethers and thioesters. The synthetic utility and practicality of this catalytic protocol are demonstrated in a wide range of successful transformations (>70 examples).

Herein, we synthesized high-performance SiO-core quantum dot (QD)-shell nanocomposites (SiO@PEI-QDs) using the polyethyleneimine (PEI)-mediated adsorption method. Cationic PEI was used to form a positively charged interlayer on the SiO core, which achieved a dense adsorption of carboxylated QDs to form a shell of QDs and maintained a good dispersibility of the nanocomposite. The SiO@PEI-QDs showed excellent stability and high luminescence, and served as high-performance fluorescent labels for the detection of bacteria when used with the lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) technique.

Early diagnosis of cancer biomarkers is the key to guiding treatments and improving the survival rate of patients. Herein, we report a novel surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS)-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for quantitative and ultra-sensitive analysis of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Gold nanorods (AuNRs) were fabricated to be in resonance with 785 nm laser excitation, that is, the excitation level that can maximize SERRS activity.

Wastewater purification using fibrous adsorbents has received much attention due to their high efficiency, low cost, and recyclability. In this work, phosphate modified polyacrylonitrile fiber (B-PANF) was prepared and used to remove cationic dyes. The B-PANF showed the best adsorption capacity for crystal violet (CV) when compared with rhodamine B, methyl green, Victoria blue B, methylene blue, and neutral red.
